Regarding -or/-our, British English used both way back when, but it got standardized to -our. When Noah Webster was putting together his dictionary, he wanted to seperate his awesome 'MURICA ENGRISH from British English as much as possible, so he used the -or suffix exclusively. Thus, the distinction was born.

Fun quote only tangentially related: I don't give a damn for a man that can spell a word only one way. -Mark Twain

Canada took Alaska, -1, not even Palin knows it yet.

Interesting fact. In Jefferson's first draft of the US declaration of independence, it contained the word "Honour" - take note of the correct spelling. :D

It was only in the final version that it was changed to the Americanised spelling "Honor"

That's horrible and not classy at all. I mean sure the US genocided a number of peoples, from the Native Americans (not to be confused with actual Americans) and the African slaves, but you don't see us plastering our victims of conquest all over our flag, do you? C'mon man, have some tact! All we do is use their names for the current military equipment we use to conquer/kill other people as we did their ancestors long ago, or make terribly racist caricatures and use them for our sports teams!

Oh come on, I'm not taking spelling advice from someone who can't spell simple words or figure out the right side of the road on which to drive. Stop being a grammar **** (I will assume that such a word will be censored out due to the over-sensitivities to some bitter krauts).

Speaking of *****, let's not forget who totally dropped the ball on that one. "Oh what? Our mustachioed friend wants to remilitarize the Rhineland? Annex Austria? Take over Czechoslovakia? Oh, that's perfectly fine! Send the gentleman our compliments." Yea yea. If you and that French paper tiger (maybe the only Frenchman in history who had some balls, seeing as the others were a short Italian and an insane woman) had actually listened to good ol' Woody Wilson at the end of WWI, we could have avoided this entire fiasco. But noooo... George (why is it that Brits with the last name of "George" always seem the worst) and Clemenceau just had to blame the entire thing on the Germans. Face it, greed got the best of you and as a result of your insane decisions we had WWII. America should have just let the Germans win that one... it was your fault anyways that it started and being the only American-speaking nation left we would be the ones to finally correct the language without mindless opposition.

WILL YOU STOP IT WITH THE SAVE THE GODDAM WALES CAMPAIGN. No one cares about wales. They're incredibly fat, blubbery, overweight, sound stupid, and serve no useful purpose in the ecosystem whatsoever. I say let Japan eat and/or have tentacle intercourse with the wales. It's a tradition or whatever. I need my oil.

Ok, I have the admit that I gave the Scots the benefit of the doubt on that one. Then again the only things I know about Scots come from the movie Braveheart. But I think that's the problem. The only reason why the Scots in Braveheart even bothered to rebel in the 13th century was because they were led by an American named Mel Gibson. As I clearly see now, without American leadership the Scots are every bit as spineless as the rest of the Brits.

Drafts have mistakes in them. Which are fixed. Because they were mistakes. Like spelling "honor" with a "u". That's a mistake that (if smart people are involved) needs to be fixed. But you blokes wouldn't know anything about that, would you? ;)

You know what other mistake we removed during the US Declaration of Independence?

The fact that we took orders from such an uncivilized, limp-wristed, pedophile-worshipping dandy boys who lacked any pinch of innovation, imagination, and initiative! That's what.

You do know language is cultural right?

British English and American English have several differences and both are recognized as legitimate.

To quote a fictional Scotsman (because as has been explained to me real Scotsman are just as wimpy as their colonial oppressors):

    THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE.

This thread looks likes its turned to off-topic crud already.
To answer you question OP, my answer is somewhat speculation but highly logical. The US Government, normally, always attempted to distance themselves from Hollywood representations and works of entertainment like video games. If you look closely at movies and video games depicting military combat, there's ALWAYS something in there that's wrong as hell. For example, in Battlefield 3, the aircraft pilot models are all the same, regardless of their faction allegiance. So when USAF pilot or enlisted airman, IRL, is watching the cut scene with the Navy dude on the aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman and observes the 'Department of the Air Force' seal on his shoulder, you can bet he's saying "WTH". In the movie 'The Day The Earth Stood Still', there's scene where and Air Force officer is ordering a Ground-to-Air Missile strike on the enemy hacked drones. He say's "Fire the sidewinder missiles". Sidewinder missiles are A2A, never G2A. There's a myriad other things you can find incorrect in media and entertainment so this is anything but new. The main reason behind these changes is probably to prevent any accusations of endorsement by the gov't. Only things like ARMA, America's Army, and the HOTAS Warthog Joystick get attention because they strive for realism first and foremost and are very accurate depictions on how they do things or how certain things are made or done.

Somewhat of an extreme answer but plausible nonetheless.

The English didnt genocide the scotsmen and the welsh, theres a pretty big difference between conquered and completely wiped out.

conquered and so the flag was made to represent the new territory.

the american flag has 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies, and i dare say the stars are all the additional conquests that were had over time.

the african slaves were slaves.. so why would they have been put on the flag.. their nation was not conquered they were stolen. and the native Americans were genocided not conquered. meaning they had no respect for their lives.

You are going a bit fast there mister 'Murican! Even had Clémenceau not pushed for it, his governement would've just fallen (french governments were very short-lived from 1870 to 1958) and the next premier would've pushed for it in his stead. France was bled out by that war: it took the biggest hit on the western front between casualties and the combat ocurring on its soil. We are still finding WW1 shells there on a regular basis, and the landscape is still visibly marked in many places, to this day.

European governments also had little reason to hear what ol'Woody was saying, as 'Murica didn't mean much in WW1: their involvement mostly accelerated the german armistice: they weren't such an economic powerhouse just yet.

Also, if you put yourself in the brit and french shoes of that time: what would happen if Germany didn't pay, whereas its production capabilities were untouched? It could very much start a war 5, 10 or 15 years later on much more favorable terms than the franco-brits, and just turn the WW1 result over. Especially as France was a late-bloomer, as far as industrialization was concerned.

Do remember that at the time the concept of nation, and thus national sentiment/pride was something fairly new to a lot of european countries, including Germany, a name which itself was more a geographical concept than a political one prior to 1871. Probably wasn't taken much into account back then.

Yes they were outstandingly dumb signing that armistice in a train wagon, or thinking of inflicting heavy reparations on a country which was easily a military match for the franco-brits, yet they had no clue it would turn out that way, apart from France's recent own mentality (France had wanted to get back at Germany badly for >40 years).

Even then, 'Murica also played its part in the "mustachioed friend" rise. The 1929 'murican economic crisis got exported to Europe, not unlike 2007, but with a few months delay. Nicely coincides with the NSDAP rapid rise to power.
Not that i'm negating the collective responsibility of team UK+FR, which was very heavy (in Churchill's WW2 memoirs, you understand that they could've won an early WW2 easily even as late as 1938 had respective governments heeded his warnings), or even the then German people for going that route.

Finally your conclusion however ironic, that 'Murica could've been left with the task of sole bearer of the english's language future is debatable: Germany was never in a position to invade Britain. In 1940 the brits had little army and light arms left, no artillery, no tanks, no continental ally after franco-britannic forces got their arses whooped on french soil. But they still had the Sea, a respectable air force but mostly a superior naval force and shore defense system.
The germans never had any landing crafts, nor any properly defined invasion plans: they believed the UK would sue for peace after some bombardments thanks to their momentum, leaving them with just the anticipated eastern front.

While thinking about it is no more than uchronia, had the UK sued for peace, 'Murica not intervened, perhaps the UK wouldn't have turned into 'Murica's junior partner (which it was already by 1944, possible explanation for the the 51st star?). It's quite hard to imagine what the fate of our continent would've been in this hypothesis.

By "no clue" are you overlooking ol' Woody? You know, him and his 14 little points that if adopted would probably have avoided WWII? America, as usual, was the only one who had a clue at all, as to how to make sure the "war to end all wars" would truly be the last one.

As usual though our wisdom was overlooked by greedy European overlords who were so used to things going their way... and the rest is history.
