That Freakin' Turret!

I'm be down with limited ammo no resupply autoturrets. That way you have to keep redeploying them and they don't last forever.

If you don't know what the spitfire turret is on PS1 and you're commenting somehow that you don't want it. I don't know what to say to you. :p

The spitfire turret would be a good idea for this game. I am not sure it is even comparable to the other "turret" that everyone else is discussing.

I personally like the current implementation of turrets.

At first, before i had tried engy out i saw turrets in open grasslands and thought LOLTURRETS.

Then i realised that those engies were terrible, and that you want to use them to hold chokepoints, generally indoor.

They're fantastic at holding areas where theres no clear sniper line - especially if you have multiple well-spaced turrets, to avoid grenade instagibs.

A couple of turrets can even give MAX suits pause: just dont use them in idiotic places.

I dont think auto turrets are a good idea, but other turret types would certainly be welcome.

Isn't that true of any class. What is better than 1 sniper, 2 snipers. What is better than 1 rocket, 2 rockets (what's better than 2 turrets, 2 rockets - lol). The point people are making is the turret by itself is useless. Unless you are in a group, because of lag, most times people can just run down a short hall right past you and you wont be able to get off the turret in time to fight. And if you are too far back you cant hit them because the range sucks on the turret and they will just peak out of a corner and launch a rocket and be back to cover before you can take half their shields down.

You are better off in every situation just putting an ammo pack on the ground and using your primary, maybe deploy the turret as a partial shield but that's about it.

    Why can't I delete a post? I was trying to edit. ^

maybe just replace the turret completely with a stick of c4,at mine or the like so if someone specs for c4,mines they can "sacrifice" their turret for 1 more of whatever explosive the chose in their utility slot

Autoturrets were essential (alongside minefields) to protecting bases from ninja caps because they provided early warning and deterrence. They were also essential protecting rear areas of the battlefield from enemy infiltration.

People like to call them skilless but you didn't just run into battle, dump a turret and suck up XP. It would be vaporized in a second by anyone with any gun. You had to place them wisely in areas that would catch an enemy off guard to get kills. Otherwise they were essentially the equivalent of those signs in front of houses advertising they have an alarm system. They slowed people down and you could still get around them.

Planetside was not a game dedicated to gunplay. Its a shooter, yes, but it was a sandbox more than that. Sure you could go out shooting and die over and over again, many people did, but many more spent their time trying new tactics and tricks to outsmart, outmaneuver, and outhink their enemy. The most devious crap came up in planetside, stuff you would never see in your typically brainless twitch shooter of the modern era. When I was an infiltrator I quickly understood that base doors, which triggered on motion, were a dead giveaway when I was on my way to destroy a generator in a base under heavy siege. Some of my most nerve wracking moments (which netted me many curses by enemies) occurred when I infiltrated fully defended bases by sneaking through door ways right behind enemy soldiers running by. Today there are no doors and if I want a generator its just a face grinding wave of death and respawn until we wipe out the enemy or get a break and can run in and destroy the generator.

In PS1 you had specialists who were good at what they did and who made a real difference in the course of the battle. You had expert tank drivers who would duel other tanks over open fields, you had ace pilots who swept away enemy air cover, escorted LLU's, and hunted down AMS's spotted by friendly units. You had infiltrators who turned entire battles by performing almost unbelievable infiltrations of enemy bases under full attack right under the nose of the enemy while doorways in were crammed with dozens of people exchanging fire. Finally, you had engineers who ensured no hard won base or tower would simply fall seconds after the zerg moved on (which happens constantly in PS2.) They created devious mine fields, provided aircover with flak turrets, guarded bases and made booby traps, kill zones and barriers, all while providing repairs for vehicles and turrets.

After PS1 I can't help but feel PS2 feels extremely generic, like BF3 (I mean there aren't even any water features anymore.) Classes basically determine what guns you can use and that's about it. I don't feel like an engineer in the game. I've never called upon to actually perform combat engineering. All I hear is "gimme ammo, gimme repairs." That's not an engineer, that's a heal bot.

In PS1 when someone called me it was "we need a defense network to secure the base," or "the barney's are coming from the north, get a minefield on the reverse slope of the hill off the road, our tank unit will be coming in over the mountainside once they hit it."
