Terran Republic Air Cav ( TRAC) was originally activated as an Experimental Special Operations Aviation unit and placed on temporary duty with the Terran Republic Expeditionary Force (TREF). Together, they were assigned to field-test a force integration mobility project based on Advanced Fleet Operations, Planetary Assault.

Due to it's remote location and terrain features, the surface of Auraxis was chosen as the project test-site. Upon completion of the landing, beachhead, and sustainment phases, all test units were then to immediately depart and return to Earth.

That was not to be however, as the wormhole collapse occurred midway through the first testing phase, leaving everyone stranded.

Terran Republic Air Cav was a Beta Outfit on the Thebe Server.

    Outfit Insignia:

"Colonel John B. Stockton will forever be known to those who knew him and served under him as the driving force and father of the Air Cavalry concept in it's formative years prior to and during the Vietnam conflict. He is known to have been the innovator of the Stetson Cavalry hat and took the first Air Cavalry unit to Vietnam (1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry regiment), he authored of the book "The Cavalry Trade" and was instrumental in creating doctrine and tactics for Air Cavalry units in Vietnam."

"The tradition of the "Cav Hat" began in the early days before the Vietnam War. The 11th Air Assault Division cavalry scout pilots were looking to distinguish themselves from other troops when they adopted the Model 1876 campaign hat for wear. They felt a need to return to the traditions of the Cavalry so long forgotten.

LTC John B. Stockton, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 17th Cavalry Regiment, is given credit for establishing the tradition of wearing the Cavalry Stetson, much to the chagrin of the Division command group.

By the time the 11th Air Assault Division was re-designated the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile) the members of his unit, the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, were wearing the hat."

    From GlobalSecurity.Org's web-site:

"On 15 September 1965, the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry began combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam as the divisional air cavalry squadron for the 1st Cavalry Division.

The 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry participated in such pivotal battles as the Ia Drang Valley, Khe Sahn, Binh Dinh, and Quang Tri. Until 28 June 1971, the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry remained in Vietnam. During that period, elements from the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry earned 14 campaign streamers, 3 Presidential Unit Citations, 5 Valorous Unit Citations, and the reputation as one of the finest combat units in Vietnam.

It is estimated that the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry was responsible for 50 percent of all enemy soldiers killed by the 1st Cavalry Division during the war. It was for this reason that the Squadron earned the nickname "The Headhunters."

The 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry troopers earned 2 Medals of Honor in Vietnam. The Fort Hood Guest House, Poxon House, was named in honor of one of the Squadron's Medal of Honor recipients, First Lieutenant Robert L. Poxon, who earned his Medal of Honor on 2 June 1969, in the Tay Ninh Province.

Hollywood honored the Squadron in its fictional portrayal of an attack on a communist base camp in the film Apocalypse Now."

"The Skull was the drinking vessel for D troop. "The skull belonged to the entire unit. The enlisted troops would come and get it for when they partied. In 1970 and 1971 a Trooper earned his scarf by drinking from the skull." Don Callison. Note - The skull has been adorned with one of D troops distinctive "Silver Belly" Stetson hats (worn by Don and visible in photo above) and yellow scarf."
