Strange lag issue

I just wanted to share a nugget of info that may REALLY help us speed this along. After dropping in a ticket referencing this thread, I was responded to by a tech support specialist. In the e-mail I was asked to include some information in my ticket. I will now post the instructions given to me in the hopes that anyone who needs to open a ticket for this issue (PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUE YOU SHOULD REPORT IT USING THE FOLLOWING STEPS) will be able to speed up the problem solving on SOE's end.

    Quote:

"Thank you for contacting Sony Online Entertainment. We are currently investigating this matter and will need to collect the following files from you in order to pass them on for review. Please follow these steps:

    1. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories, right-click the Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator"
Windows 8 - Press the WINDOWS and X keys together and then click on Command Prompt (Admin). Click Yes to the User Account Control message that appears.

    2. Copy and paste the below commands into your command prompt. You can paste into your command prompt by right clicking and selecting paste.

    ipconfig /all > c:\netinfo.txt
    tracert lp.soe.com >> c:\netinfo.txt
    pathping lp.soe.com >> c:\netinfo.txt

These commands will not output to the command prompt, they will create a file named c:\netinfo.txt

Make sure to run each command one at a time. Because you are outputting to a file, it will appear as though nothing is happening for a while, especially on the second and third commands. Make sure you wait for the cursor to pop up again and allow you to type before proceeding to the next step. Once complete, please attach the file c:\netinfo.txt to this ticket.

Once you have it attached I will also need to get the following information form you:

    Connection Information:
    - Who is your ISP ?
    - Physical location (City, State, Country) ?
    - What is the make & model of your modem ?
    and router (if separate) ?
    - Type of connection (Wireless/Wired) ?
    - DSL, Cable or Fiber ?
    - Download and upload speeds (ping, dl, ul; can check this by going to http://speedtest.net/ ) ?

Please keep the format above. This will enable us to process your request more efficiently. Thank you for your patience."

The customer service rep wasn't kidding: it does take time for steps 2 and 3. Once you're done following the steps above, the files can be found under your C:// drive. Please use the above format and hopefully we can speed things up a bit XD

About this here is what they asked me:

Thank you for contacting Sony Online Entertainment. I'm sorry to hear you are encountering issues with PlanetSide 2. I’ll need you to create the following two diagnostic files so I can take a closer look for any potential hardware and software issues:

    DxDiag.txt
    MSinfo.txt

To create the files on your hard drive, please follow these instructions:

    DxDiag.txt
    - Press and hold the Windows key and tap the R key on your keyboard.
    - In the box that pops up type DXDIAG and press Enter on your keyboard.
    - Click the "Save all Information" button, located at the bottom of the program window.
    - In the "Save As" box click the icon in the top bar.
    - Select the desktop and save the file as "dxdiag.txt"

    MSinfo.txt
    - Press and hold the Windows key and tap the R key on your keyboard again.
    - In the box that pops up type MSINFO32 and press Enter on your keyboard.
    - Click on the "File" menu and choose "Export..."
    - Select the desktop and save the file as "MSInfo.txt"

Assistance with these instructions can be found at this Knowledge Base article:
    http://help.soe.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/28973

Once you have the files please attach them to the support ticket and response so our agents can continue troubleshooting your issue.

The lag issue is not an ISP issue. The lag was introduced after the first January patch that took out the servers for such a long time. Since then the spikes have been shocking. At the same time I was gaming i was running a constant enhanced ping courtesy of SolarWinds and a recalculating traceroute app monitoring the miller server. The increases in ping did not correlate to the lag spikes. One particularly bad spike for around 10 seconds I was seeing 65ms response, no packet loss and 47fps i game.

To add to this I can play any other online game without the lag issue. The same connection is also used for iCloud with AppleTV and Netflix HD movie streaming all without issue.

No idea what they cocked up with the big patch but that patch started all this nonsense off.

There are multiple lag related issues. What you're describing is a spike in lag in game during certain periods, which is different from the issue this particular discussion is originally about. You should probably open a support ticket detailing your issue.

This topic is about the issues seen on US East coast servers - namely Waterson, Mattherson and the test server (all in the same data center), and seems to be affecting NJ/NY Fios users.

    The many symptoms include:

    - A very long time to just login to the game
    - When you manage to login, the terminals/people in WG/etc takes multiple seconds to appear
    - Everything warps like crazy around you
    - When you log out, you get stuck at 32%

The problem you describe is most definitely not this issue, cause its so bad its totally unplayable, and it goes on for hours and days even. It has sorted itself out for periods at a time, and gotten totally unplayable again.

And yes I do agree - servers have seen a lag spike since that Jan patch, but that lag is nothing like the US East issue, its really tame in comparison. This one is so bad its totally unplayable.

Also it is likely ISP/Internet routing related, as I can bypass the issue if I use a VPN service to change how I get routed to the US East servers. So its likely not the servers themselves that are the problem.

    - A very long time to just login to the game - check
    - When you manage to login, the terminals/people in WG/etc takes multiple seconds to appear - check
    - Everything warps like crazy around you - big check

Looks very similar to me chap

Update: Problem corrected for me (for the last day anyway)

I just wanted to update my situation and see if anyone else is had the same experience.
After days of unplayable lag on the east coast servers (I play from NJ), all lag has magically cleared up. I played for hours last night on Mattherson (in very heavy battles) with hardly a glitch.
I don't know if it was because of the last patch, or something got corrected in the path to the server, but all lag is gone and it's back to normal for me. At least I don't have to play on the west coast server anymore (Connery), which was the only one I could play on with no lag at all.

So either Sony ninja patched the problem, or Verizon got their act together in VA, which is where I think a few people believed the issue was. I'm sure we will not hear an admission from either party anyway, just glad it's resolved...at least for me.

    Its spreading to other regions!

Also you have another one of the symptoms too - ping times aren't bad and there's no packet loss. I tried pathping which is a combo traceroute/ping which sends a bunch of packets during periods of issue with Waterson, and ping times from all hops was fine, no packet loss.

The game worked with no lag issues last night, (tested it at 11:00 p.m. est) but I only played for 10 minutes. I'm assuming the problem cleared up. It also works right now currently. We''ll see what happens over the weekend, hopefully this issue has been resolved. Thank you to everyone for their help. (Verizon Fios NJ customer btw)

Awwwwwwwwwwwww I can't really imagine what they done that day......

PS2 developers respond to concerns of continued, escalating degradation of quality:

    "Don't worry scro, my wife's a t a r d, and she's ok"

"You mean like out the toilet?!"

"Generation 2 Halloween Horns coming scro!"

"We seem to be experimenting [sic] some technological difficulties"

"huh, huh, yeah I like money"

    "I like money"

    "More patches coming scro!"

Can confirm, lag is no longer present as of 1/31. Hopefully it stays fixed this time instead of returning two days later.
  12. Lightning Dust

Still receiving the same lag issues. it's been two weeks or so since I could actually play this game... I'm very dissapointed, but im not giving up
  13. Strikejk

Lag is still present. Even tho it seems to occur much less and more random
  14. Stugatz21

Mattherson issue has resurfaced after about 1 day of playable conditions. It's been a month since i could use my 6 month boost, i feel cheated
  15. Riley5

I too had about two days of playable connection, and much fun was had. During that time, my route looked like this:

As expected, the lag is back too, and I cannot play. (ON WATERSON. CONNERY WORKS FINE.)

When we as individual users talk to Verizon support, they shrug and say it's not their problem. You, Sony, need to step in here. You are losing business.

    Take action.
  16. Centhan

Wow, how did you know? Yes, major lag is back for me again as well on Mattherson (east coast server). It's 100% unplayable. I had to go back to playing on Connery (west coast server), where it plays smooth as can be. Of course this isn't where I put all my time into, so I'm basically starting from scratch.

I don't know how they expect to maintain customers with performance like this. I paid in the past, and was thinking about it again after just trying to get back into the game, but really can't see myself doing it now. That's really too bad.
  17. VoidMagic

It's back for me. This is very frustrating.
  18. Saval

Lag issue is back. Unplayable lag and desync on Waterson.
  19. NoctD

Back for me too. And trying a trace route on my Mac, wow, its showing badness too...

Issue has returned for me as well. PLEASE REMEMBER TO UPDATE YOUR EXISTING TICKETS AND LET THEM KNOW IT HAS RETURNED.

If you haven't created a ticket yet, please do so now so they can fix this issue. I am still appalled by the over-all lack of ANY kind of dev support here. Guess their own forums aren't as productive as REDDIT.
