so, what cpu to upgrade to for acceptable fps?

hey. i just upgraded my system from 4gb ram to 8gm (ddr 3 1333mhz) and from a radeon 5770 to a 7870 in hopes of finally being able to play this game fluenty. however, my doubts turned out to be correct, as the main problem is my cpu (thats what the ingame indicator tells me). medium/big fights near biolabs etc. give me something like <20fps, regardless of the graphics setting

    current system:
    bequiet 430W
    athlon 2 x3 445 3.1ghz (4th core unlocked, so working as a phenom 2 x4, no l3 cache)
    8gb ram ddr3 1333mhz
    radeon 7870 2gb gigabyte
    asrock m3n78d
    scythe katana 3 cooling

so, as i see it, my options are:
    - overclock the athlon 2 (but before i get into the whole oc stuff, id like to know if its actually futile here)
    - get the best thats still accesible for the am3, as in, phenom 2 x4 965be or x6 1045t (if so, which one?), but again ive been reading people have fps problems with those aswell
    - get an entirely new mainboard and a proper intel cpu. sooner or later i this is necessary anyways, but before i spent that much money id like to make absolutely sure that it allows me to play this game somewhat fluently. with that i mean >30fps regardless of the situation. i really dont care much about graphics (lower settings fine for me), but performance...god i cant stand low fps.

    thanks in advance

I have Phenom II X4 965 and its not enough. My video card is HD6870 but i only play on 1280x1024 resolution. The FPS can go to very low, even 15FPS. You can see the performance on my videos:

Read description for more info... If Planetside2 can use 6cores then go for fastest X6.
  3. eckart

thanks...hm i expected something like this. that means ocing the athlon 2 is not enough by far. so yah, anyone with ideas what intel cpu will certainly be enough?
  4. Mooncricket

Nothings enough for this game. I have read post after post where many people are having the same problem. I get 50+ at the sanctuary, but if I get to one of the big domes 10-30, and I dont have a massive system. Thing is BF3 does not have near the problems and it looks a lot better then this with dynamic buildings and such crashing down. This game is just poorly coded.

No matter what GFX setting I am on this game just tanks in a fire fight. Its playable, but its the same story. Thats whats fishy about it. No matter what setting low med or high its the same story. 50 or so fps at the gate and bio lab drops to sub 30. Initially I swapped to low settings thinking I would get an increase in perfromance, but nope. So for now I am playing on high at 20fps in fights. Might as well it beats low at 20fps right? I will never spend a dime until the game can run decently on my system.

    Inte Quadcore CPU 2.5ghz
    8gb
    GTX-560

Go for the Intel CPU+motherboard. It will cost you more now, but it's an upgrade you won't regret. I'm running on Planetside on an i5-3550K and an i7-3770K (My daughters rig, and my own) and there's no slowdowns even when things go bat **** crazy. (Daughters rig has a Geforce 660, my own rig a 680GTX)
  6. SoraPaladin

I currently have an i5 3570k installed. It's clocked @ 4.5 ghz now, and I have no problems running at 60 fps (Even in huge fights it's extremely smooth).

If your motherboard isn't compatible with intel chips, however, I would suggest you buy an AMD X4 965 Black Edition. It's the best of the AMD chips for gaming right now.

Scure says that his processor is the problem, but It's not. His graphics card is outdated. Yours isn't.

Keep in mind that the game is not optimized right now, and performance for everybody (Even the enthusiasts) will improve over time.

My graphics card is an MSI GTX 660 ti @ 1200 mhz.
  7. TanknSpank

I use a i5 2500K overclocked to 3.8 GHz (I believe base speed is 3.4 GHz) and I get decent framerates (50-55 usually, 35-40 in heavy battles) bottlenecked by an ATI 6850.
  8. Scure

My video card is highly enough for this game at 1280x1024 without AA, AF. Seriously this card performance is between HD5850 and HD5870 and these cards was the high end 2 years ago. I can play on Battlefield 3, Crysis2 and everything at max settings.
    The CPU is the problem...

    Regarding gpu:
    Radeon HD 5870 2518
    GeForce GTX 650 1875
    GeForce GTX 650 Ti 2727
    GeForce GTX 660 3957
    GeForce GTX 660 Ti 4666

    Topicstarter:
    Radeon HD 5770 1656
    Radeon HD 7870 4032

So that is fine. In fact you bought a waaay to fast gpu for your cpu ;).

Regarding cpu you need to get an Intel i5 quadcore cpu.

    AMD Phenom II X4 965 4344
    Intel Core i5-3330 @ 3.00GHz 5339
    Intel Core i5-3470 @ 3.20GHz 6602
    Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.40GHz 7137

    @SoraPaladin
Even with an i5 overclocked you will get slowdowns on a busy server (very high population). I have seen drops to 30 fps in large scale combat. Issues lies with the engine (it loads the cpu less than 55%).
  10. TanknSpank

His card should run it without problems. I have a 6850 and I run at 1920x1080 with decent FPS.

    CPU seems to make a huge difference. My wife's rig is CPU-limited on a 1100T (6 cores @ 3.3 GHz) despite her card being only a 4870. Mine is GPU-limited on a 2500K (4 cores @ 3.8 GHz) with a 6850.

thanks guys, i thought as much. now getting a 965be, though cheap, is still about one third of the upgrade to a fine i5 + board, so i guess its most reasonable to just go for the latter, especially considering the future. would the psu be sufficient?
  12. KolourBlynd

My specs will be listed below my comment. I would suggest this; that you think about upgrading to a fairly powerful rig, or planning out a dream rig with Wish Lists.

I built my rig using a credit line with 0% interest for a year, coming out to be $1200 roughly.
(I added about $500 to this for the monitors, I like to multitask work and was looking to upgrade those later on after the rig was built)

I'd suggest taking parts you wish to keep, changing the MB, CPU, PSW (750W), and you may consider getting a larger case if you need, and get a Core i5-3570K for OC/Intel Core i5-3450 for stock. Make sure as to get a Z75 chipset MB when using any Crossfire/SLi setups, otherwise I suggest an H77.
  13. DirtyRavePAnd

They haven't finished optimising. Read the sticky threads. Don't splash out on upgrades yet! Some people with top end rigs are struggling with the fps.
  14. SoraPaladin

Personally, I would upgrade the PSU.

You want a bronze certified efficient, single 12V rail @ about 600 watts at least. You could get one for probably 50 bucks.

PSU's are not the part to skimp out on. I would recommend getting a Corsair brand PSU if you're new to hardware. They have great products and customer service.

    Edit: Here's a link to a great one. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

You can try with your current cpu. An i5 hardly uses power. The 7870 has a peak of 115W.

I dont think I have seen my pc draw more than 350W so far.

I used a be quiet 350W on my old e6750+ gtx260 (uses more power) because I wanted to re-use it's 750W psu and it worked fine.
  16. Dovahkiin

For now, set shadows to low, set terrain quality to low, and set particle effects to low. You can also reduce your render distance.

Anyways, a CPU that can run everything would be any intel CPU overclocked to 3.8-4ghz or higher.

The only reason why many are seeing a drop in FPS is the CPU.

The best thing to do would be to look into overclocking, buy a very good cooler, overclock as high as you can go, then wait for the game to be better optimized. In the meantime, occupy yourself with other things, or keep playing Planetside 2, your choice.
This way, you will save a lot of money and i can guarantee you that after 3-6 months your minimum FPS will be 25-35.

NOTE: when looking into overclocking, look specifically into AMD overclocking. AMD CPU's are very different when it comes to overclocking compared to Intel.

    Words of Notice:

Even with my rig the frames will drop to below 40 during large raids. Granted that this is below the SLi minimum (60fps,) I still have a respectable experience visually and have no real problems playing competitively. However the game is still running through some optimization phases, and as such have caused lockups and crashes, but once some changes have been made the game should work fine.

As Dovahkiin had pointed out, your CPU will be the main issue for many players, since object tracking and distance rendering usually rely on fast CPU processing. However unless you use a 7000-series ATi or 500 series nVidia card, your graphics can only be set to Medium for competitive play. Xfire some 6000's or SLi some 400's and you got High settings.
  18. Bags

With my 2500k OC'd to 4.4ghz and everything on high my CPU is still the bottleneck in big fights. Get around 50 fps now.

Yet to test out a huge clusterf**** wiht the OC, I imagine it will still drop below 40 then.
  19. KolourBlynd

Yes, the game is not fully optimized yet. Do realize, however, that any program running your quad-core CPU at more than 75% load for all cores is probably also not optimized well, as most applications still have trouble fully utilizing cores after the first 2. Because of this fact many experts will recommend going with Dual-core solutions if gaming is the main use; Going for a quad-core (Intel) usually ensures prolonged use of the processor before having to upgrade, but by no means is it necessary for current gaming standards.
  20. KolourBlynd

Our systems are practically the same, but I doubt our CPU's are the Bottleneck. Server optimizations and the game engine are the sources of issues and tweaks to these will most likely break the bottleneck for our systems. People with quicker or more resourceful CPU's still find themselves facing FPS slowdowns once in a raid.
