So I tried out the Skyguard

    It always comes back down to this, doesn't it? Why should Flak units, which are all highly vulnerable (some of the lightest armor in the game) and all have to lead flak on the most highly maneuverable targets in the game, have to content themselves with 'you're not supposed to get kills'?

    Literally every other unit and playstyle in the game gets TONS of kills. Why should AA be any different? Even with rendering issues, it is not in any way difficult to spam rockets or zephyrs at ground targets that, for as fast as they move and change direction, may as well be standing still. Ground units have render issues too, you know, they get killed by troops that aren't rendering for them all the time.

    I have yet to see a convincing argument for why AA deserves to be in some special class that doesn't deserve to be materially rewarded for what it does like everything else in this game. For every "all he had to do was spam flak and collect kills" story someone has, there's one of a lib with a zephyr and thermal vision reaping dozens upon dozens of free kills that required no more effort than "fly to waypoint, hold left mouse".

    This.
    Try hitting anything in a Magrider turret while the driver is bobbing and weaving and "bouncing" off of every rock and bump in the road.

    Did you all know the best anti air weapon is the vulcan on prowler. 2 clips of 30 lib is dead, 1 clip for scyths/reavers, to bad they have to be rather close to hit them. Anyway I've hit libs with 4-5 full clips of skyguard rounds still alive. And it's extremely easy for air to find and destroy a tank while finding air targets not so much especially targets that come from the behind where tank is weakest....fun how air doesn't have "weak spot"

    I run Skyguard when I'm in a Lightning and love it. Sure, I'd like some more oomph, but it's still fun. Couple days back I found myself sitting next to two other skyguards parked outside a tech plant. Through the miracle of proximity chat, we were able to work together effectively and downed quite a few aircraft before they managed to kill a couple of us.

    How can "area denial" noise makers that aren't designed to kill Possibly act as a balance ? (If your answer is to convince 9 of my friends to stop whatever thir doing and come temporarily scare some air away don't bother replying)

    Sky guards suck. Better to pull out AA MAX's. They seem to be more effective as well as they can be ressed / repaired, whereas in a tank you are dead. Plus MAX can get to air pads and other good vantage points that tanks can't. The only advantage would be the mobility aspect for escorting a column. But really, you just have a sunderer and people jump out to grab MAXs.

    Nice try, pilot.
  8. Cavadus

    Dude's Vanu too so he isn't even aware Vans and Prowlers are forced to stop to fire to have a modicum of accuracy.

    Lotta n00bs around here don't play other factions.
  9. TeknoBug

    I got the Skyguard as part of the vehicle starter bundle a month ago, I've only used it a total of 2 times and never bothered with it again, lots of people I talk to said the same thing.
  10. Chancellor Gowron

    IMO Skyguard projectile speed is way too low, spread is maybe a tiny bit too high but not too bad, and the damage is fine.

    I also tried skyguard and its awesome, I had upgraded lightning as I was already using the HE shells previously and I tell you, anti air that can move up to 90kmph is so awesome, you can EASILY dodge rocket pods, if you have fire suppression system, you can get from 0 to about 25 with one button click and then with upgraded repair tool repair the rest on one repair gun charge. And before the rocket diver comes back, you are full and ready for him xD

    I killed several ESFs this way, the damage is awesome, even better than my dual burster max, if you hit with it, the health of ESF goes down like its from paper.

    Liberators with delton? Yes, those are bigger problem if you remain stationary but it is 3 man vehicle against 1 man skyguard, what do you expect. With 3 AA maxes or 2 maxes and skyguard, you can get it down.
    The advantage of skyguard against liberator is that he cant hit you with delton and zepher doesn't do much damage on that splash.

    It was one of the better purchases I made (that skyguard in the discount 50%), so mobile AA is much more fun than AA max that is extremely slow.

    so pro tips:
    1. upgrade speed
    2. upgrade fire suppression
    3. MOVE, it is ultra mobile AA, you are not supposed to "PARK" it.

    Thats all.

    It's been a while since i tried a SG, but if the devs think that this is only an area denial weapon that is supposed to scare away and not kill aircrafts then i want 3 things:
    1 - some exp per hit;
    2 - a much larger magazine for the SG, so that i can suppress an aircraft until it runs away or dies, without pauses where it can roflpod me and then go back behind a mountain to repair;
    3 - faster projectiles;
    Damage can then stay the same, maybe a bit higher against liberators.

    Spread is too wide, projectile speed too low, for some reason the tracers are less visible than the burster max, and I swear each projectile actually deals less damage than the bursters.

    If one can hit anything with the skyguard while on the move, their target was almost literally right on top of them and they were driving around within a bases walls or on even rarer occasion, a very select few areas on the Indar Seabed, aka, the only flat surfaces on Auraxis. Even then, they were liable to just simply hit something as they were driving while firing in another direction. Some lies are too obvious, or people are putting too much stock into the one time they got lucky and succeeded when they shouldn't have. I've won a few dogfights, doesn't make me an ace pilot. I've shot down MORE fighters and bombers with my lightning's AP cannon than I have the skyguard cannon. That doesn't make the AP cannon an AA device, though sadly, it IS the more capable AA device than the priciest lightning turret dedicated to the role of AA.

    its way to weak, never trust anyone ith a flying vehicle in their signiture or avatar in their opinion. Its likely to be biased
  15. MrK

    Still, PS1 Skyguard was as mobile, if not more, and 5x more effective.
    Case in point, it had a dedicated gunner that allowed firing on the move easily, and the recoil was ZERO. That's the 2 difference right there.

    And air balance was not a problem back then.
  16. 13lackCats

    You were alone. The Mossy wasn't

    What did you expect?

    This isn't a run and gun game. You have very little chance if you're outnumbered and calling attention to yourself.

    Yeah skyguard is useless, I'm quite ticked off at all the money I've spent on buying anti air weapons. Heck those that fly were telling us that we needed to buy anti air and all problems would be solved. I guess joke's on us for believing that and spending the money on AA....and joke's on the devs for catering to the flying minority that have been farming ground units since launch.

    I normally laugh at folks who cry about air/AA imbalance. However, I did finally get the Skyguard when it went on sale...it's pretty much as advertsided. Disappointing.

    Negatives:
    Its CoF is too big, its projectile speed to slow, and clip size is small and can't be improved.

    Positives?
    It does decent damage to ESF and liberators...it is pathetic againt Galaxies however.
    The reload isn't too slow.
    RoF is nice.

    Over-all a dual burster is significantly more fun and effective. I've been aware of Skyguard on the receiving end when I'm piloting and I'm not concerned EVER about a single skyguard, where as a single tower or Max will chase if you off you don't destroy them. I thought that was bad lightening drivers.

    It's not...skyguard is depressing and the worst out of Maxes and Shoulder Launcher AA.

    And before the trolls jump in...I play EVERYTHING. Planes, trains and automobiles and infantry. Maxes, towers and missiles are all fine, learn to play. Skyguard and the G30 Walker (ground based) are sad puppies currently IMO. I'll only be using this is the Max is on cooldown, or I'm the only Heavy with a lock-on launcher around.

    i find this quite stupid. not your comment, but the fact that a vehicle that is presumably at least 10 tons has 'recoil' imparted on it by a gun that shouldn't be capable of producing that much recoil.

    also the default gun for the lightning shouldn't recoil either. this is a low velocity artillery type gun, it shouldn't impart recoil.
  20. Xiphos

    To kill a stationary ESF in 2 seconds, like a ESF kills a stationary Lightning.

    It's only balanced. You can spare yourself the pathetic double standard response by the way, pilot.
