Small skirmishes or large battles?

    Which do you prefer?

Lately, ever since I left my old outfit and started lonewolfing, I've found that I really, really like smaller skirmishes. They just make me feel so much better about myself. I just love the fact that in a skirmish, a single player can turn the tide of the battle, where as in a gigantic, large scale battle, it takes multiple platoons. That's not to say I don't love an all out slugfest between factions, but I find that in skirmishes I just enjoy myself so much more.

In an ideal world I prefer small skirmishes for infantry and large battles for vehicles.

I find that my enjoyment alternates between the two. I lone wolf all of the time now.

Small skirmishes within large battles. If that makes any sense. Basically I like big battles where the front is sort of spread out, so not to many people bogged down in one place like camping a spawn room door or something. Foot and armor zergs going at it in between the bases. If there's enough cover for infantry, even better.

Back then using my old PC I preferred small skirmishes purely because of my FPS going epileptic in bigger battles. Now with 60-70 FPS even in the middle of hundreds of people fighting I can firmly say - I love both. What I don't like is REALLY small fights (like up to 5vs5, just random people on some semi-abandoned base), but other than that - throw me into any fight and I'll be happy as soon as I 'catch up' (by what I mean getting the right class/loadout for current situation, because sometimes I can't really hit the sweetspot and I'm sad :p).

I prefer smaller fights, I tend to be solo and trying to hold a room with 2-5 doors alone..
At a large fight, 6+ guys rush the room I am trying to solo hold and just wreck me, which its not much fun. :(

If there are actually people helping on point defense, then it is mostly stand around and wait with no action..
The enemy never makes it past the chokepoints into the point room, there are 6+ guys at each chokepoint killing them..

The only reason I can see to be at a large fight is if I want to play medic.

Small skirmishes - say 24v24 are my specialty.

I love those 12-24 (vs the same) battles. I like 24-48 too (depends on the hex), but 48+ sucks. 48+ battles considerably reduce the importance of whatever you're doing as an individual, but mostly break a significant part of PS2's gameplay:

    - base sizes, choke points are not dimensioned appropriately for it
    - the game and/or server structure have huge trouble handling it: ping takes a serious hit, hiding models before a certain distance, jittery enemies(unkillable with guns appropriate for range) past a certain distance, for those who appear.
    - it renders skirmish specialist classes, which LA/Inf are, quite useless (eyes are everywhere) except for C4 delivery for LA

1-12 skirmishes can be fun, but balance in those is harder to achieve (one very good player or one MAX, or one ESF farmer and it goes down the drain).

Lots of pewpew + Large areas (between bases for vehicles and Biolabs/Amps for infantry) -> fun
Less pewpew + Small bases / choke points -> fun
Lots of pewpew + Small Bases -> crap
Less pewpew + Large areas -> crap

Why do you want me to choose? I love both!
  11. Ribero

12-24 v 12-24 where the Enemy have 50-55%~ pop, very few MAXes and no vehicles interfering.
    It's the dream.

large battles all the way! if i had wanted 24vs24 (or smaller) battles only, i would be playing Battlefield4

oh what I forgot to mention:

It´s completely different when I just hop in a huge battle alone or if I join it with a squad. Running around in an unorganized mess of randoms is frustating.

It's not so much about the size as the density to me. 96/96 fights can be great over a spread out area, but not so all packed into a tiny base. But in a small base, smaller numbers are more fun. Once you get to that point where the side taking the point has all the chokepoints guarded and the spawn room camped, its not much fun anymore. But if there's not quite enough to cover everywhere all the time, it feels like there's more flow; and that to me is more funner(!).

The best, most enjoyable fights, for me are usually the ones between the bases, there's more back and forth, manoeuver is important, it develops into multiple smaller overlapping fights, with a real seeming battle line.

It's really not the size of the battle that matters to me. I have very much enjoyed small, medium and large scale battles. I've even had fun "dueling" before. The bigger factor for me is if I feel I am actually doing something. I don't like farming or roflstomping, regardless of which side I am on. Being farmed or completely overwhelmed is frustrating. Farming or overwhelming others is just dull and boring. Big or small, win or lose, if it's a good back and forth slugfest, I'll probably have fun.
  16. Targanwolf

All sizes..medium and large are my preference but I'll fight small too.

As we all know Planetside 2 is all about large battles. The bigger is always better. That reason is why everyone, no exception, plays this game. All things should be balanced around the 200+ 200+ fights. If you like smaller fights then your opinion is provably wrong and you should go play a different game.

That is what I would say if I was totally insane. I love small fights.

    Infantry:
12 to 60 people fighting over an average sized base is my favourite. It's small enough that you can actually make a difference but big enough to find enough enemies to shoot at. Also FPS are higher and you have a chance to be sucessful without staying back and farming from distance.

    Vehicle:
Don't really care, just need it big enough to have targets and some infantry/air-force to protect my MBT from Liberators bombing from 300m with Dalton.

The third usually precipitates the second. I'm usually that MAX. ESFs can (and do >=)) burn in hell.
  20. Outreach

The game is designed and all about large battles. If you want small skirmishes you should go and try out pretty much any other fps.
