We all know PS2 is coming to Playstation soon. What I'm wondering, is what will it mean for us PC players. Hopefully, it will mean good things. Now as I understand it, PC and Playstation players will be on different servers, though I could be wrong about that. Either way, that's not something that really concerns me one way or the other. What concerns me, is what happens to us faithful PC players? If a huge number of Playstation players start playing, will SOE even pay attention to us? Companies tend to pay attention to their largest segment of customers. If the Playstation PS2 is successful, then will we become the forgotten children of PS2? Will SOE provide PC patches and updates with the same regularity, or will the dev team become focused on providing new content, weapons and cosmetics for the game. Will we start to see posts in the forum from devs saying "Sorry guys, we've had to push the update back again, been working on some new stuff for the new continents and a ton of helmets. But don't worry, we are looking into the CTD and Nvidia/AMD issues and should have a patch out late next month. In the meantime, log onto Playstation for this weekends special Triple XP for new players and earn a special Playstation only set of armor." Now I'm hoping this won't be the case. I'm hoping that a bunch of new Playstation players will mean SOE will increase the PS2 development team size. Leading to more content, more updates, more stuff to buy. I'm also hoping that some of those Playstation players will try PS2 on PC, wanting to see what the game looks like truly awesome graphics and how it plays even better with a mouse/keyboard. Now before you reply, take a quick moment to understand that I tend to exaggerate a lil. I DON'T think SOE will be doing Triple XP weekends or whatever. So before you quote me and tear me to shreds over one line in my post, understand I know what I wrote is a lil over the top. I'm just curious as to what you think about the overall theme of my post. As I said, I hope this will mean awesome things for us in the PC community. But this IS Sony we're talking about here.
You bet it will. Remember, SOE can't forget their MAIN player base that started it all. WHO ARE US. We allowed them to gain the money to work on a PS4 version. More players= MOAR FUNDS. MOAR FUNDS= More fun for both the console bosses and PC masters Don't worry, man. Only great things will occur when PS2 comes out on console. When SOE sees how much money they're making, they're going to thank us, one way (QUADruple XP) or the other (More buffs and ES stuff for the factions)
They will probably focus on PS4 a lot around its release on that platform (they already have been for quite a while now to get it running properly). My guess for the future is that PC will get patches with the same frequency as now, and that the PS4 will get a big update every now and then (because it takes ages to get a patch through on consoles + it costs them monies). What I hope will not happen is that the PC version becomes a test version for all the patches before they get put onto the PS4. I want to trust SOE enough not to do this, but you never know.... Pros for the PC guys with the PS4 release? Hopefully it'll be a big game (a massive scale MMOFPS on a console with great graphics and 60fps, with the proper advertisement this CANNOT go wrong) which will mean a bigger dev team, and thus more frequent and larger updates for both platforms. I've heard that the PS4 optimization will also be brought into the PC version and will help to increase performance. Hopefully we'll get some nice multithreading support with that, as the PS4 does have 8 cores. I don't see how the PS4 release is going to be a bad thing for us, unless they just use us as beta testers. I don't think they'll be focusing too much on shiny customization things. We already have a boat load of camo's, helmets, decals etc. in this game. I don't think the PS4 guys will be asking for more any time soon.
They merged the builds for a reason. So if PS4 causes them to get a lot more development? We'll see every advantage of that because every change they make affects both platforms. Only difference I know of is UI due to PS4 limited controls and design around pad etc. but all content and balance will affect both.
Good post. Valid. Points . I'm waiting for the ps4 version for a new challenge and new meat. Makes me think why log into PC version.... On the other side of the coin that is bullsht for the loyal PC only players. Don't disenfranchise your costumers SOE. It'll make me want to play destiny instead of planetside. As a loyal PC gamer I will keep note of how you treat us PC guinea pigs to determine whether to spend money on the playstation version. Make very conscious business decisions or many of your playstation+PC gamers will stick their middle fingers up and find destiny and and the next PC game to occupy their time and wallets..
Lots of pilots would disagree with you, PC is going to be forgotten like all the pilots that use to enjoy the past meta did, many of them quit and soe didnt care as the majority of the PS2 population was happy with the changes, now pilots are few and everybody loves the no skill required weapons tomcats and coyotes, same thing will happen to the PC players if PS4 players become a big majority.
Well they have said that they will merge the underlying code base which basically mean that they will develop both version at the same time. Then you cannot make features for one version and not for the other which is good. Furthermore, it is much much easier to push updates to the PC platform than the PS4 since they need to be validated to be released to the Playstation. So to some extent, we will get new features first and then iron out the glitches before they can collect enough updates to push it through validation and give it to the PS4 players. Hopefully, it will give the PC version a lot of much needed PR. It was badly advertised on PC but it seems like they are really pushing the PS4 version. It is a big deal for the PS4. They don't have that many games as of yet and the whole large scale F2P model is very rare on console. So I think it will get quite a bit of attention which will spill over. Gamers read about it and think it sounds interesting. Then they see there's a PC version and go and try that. So overall, I don't see many drawbacks with a console version. It should bring quite a bit of good things.
I doubt they would abandon one of the more profitable communities in their profile. That would be beyond silly.
