for me the game ran horribly on the old driver, but I switched to the beta version of this driver and it works much better.
    Win 8, 64bit

Nope. Windows 8 blows. I have both and I would never put that POS OS on my main desktop. I have 8 on my Ultrabook, because I couldn't get 7 on it.

8 is Microsoft really trying hard to bully people into using their stupid app store, and it's been rejected a lot of people in the tech community.

It's idiot friendly interface is confusing, the lack of actual settings is annoying, the lack of a real start menu or normal Windows interface is ridiculous and forcing developers to use the app store or not supporting thing is absurd.

Windows 8 is their worst OS since 95. Windows 7 is without a doubt, the best Windows ever.

Windows 8 is objectively superior to Windows 7.

You don't have to use it.

It's 99% identical to Windows 7 in function.

It has the same settings as Windows 7.

Start screen is better than the start menu. Learn how to use it before you whine. And the interface is... functionally the same as Windows 7's, with a different skin(flat, more colour, that's it)

No one is forcing anyone to use the app store.

Windows 8 is the best OS, being a slightly improved Windows 7. Get back to me when your complaints aren't all horribly wrong and misinformed.

Actually, I do have to use it on my Ultrabook. With the secure boot BIOS, you can't install a new OS.

Here is a short article on the worst aspect of Windows 8, and the reason I hate it so much(other than the poor ergonomics) http://www.pcper.com/news/Editorial/Stop-Pushing-Microsofts-Buttons-Take-Start-Button

The kernel may be largely the same, and it boots faster(but restarting and power off are reversed in functionality it seems), but the fact that they're pushing the app store and the clunky metro interface on x86 desktops, which requires a touch screen or a lot of frustration, really sucks.

Now, how is it objectively superior to Windows 7?

PhysX driver in 320.18 is the same in the previous beta version, my game has been fine with the 300 beta, just installing the updated driver now (none of the 3D add-ins or audio required).

The article just whines about the entirely optional windows app store?

Don't use it, you're not forced to, end of story.

Again, the app store is 100% OPTIONAL. Don't use it. Steve Ballmer isn't going to sneak up on you and slit your throat if you don't touch the app store.

Because it takes Windows 7 and adds on a lot of improvements in optimization and the wonderful new start screen which is FAR better than the old start menu.

How is Windows 8 NOT superior to Windows 7?

    basically this^

besides the start button not being there is a little funny because if you right click in the bottom left you get a start menu that is far far far better than the win 7 one. If you used the start menu all the time to use programs why not use a shortcut on the desktop or pin it to the taskbar?
  8. BlackDove

Actually, the problem is that they are pushing toward forcing people to use it. Perhaps you missed this part of the article:

"Then again, we can hope that Microsoft associates this pain with love for the desktop. I would be comfortable with the modern Windows if we were given a guarantee that desktop x86 applications would forever be supported. I might even reconsider using and developing applications if they allow loading uncertified metro-style applications and commit to never removing that functionality.

I can get used to a new method of accessing my applications. I can never get used to a middle-man who only says "no". If Microsoft is all ears, I hope we make this point loud and clear."

    That's the problem.

Secondly, how is the new Start Menu better? Having more mouse clicks to get to the same thing is better?

Having a smartphone style app that pops up, instead of one running on the desktop is worse, and totally defeats the purpose of Windows.

Plus, the Metro version of whatever program sucks compared to the normal one. Just try using the Metro version of Skype! It's garbage compared to the desktop version. You can't prevent it from muting the rest of your volume, even when you disable the setting that does that in Windows, because the Metro version doesn't have the option in it! And if it does, it's impossible to find!

Windows 8 is great for a tablet or a phone, but it sucks on a PC, which is why they responded by releasing Enterprise versions of Windows 8 that take you right to where most people who know how to use a computer want to be: the normal desktop, not some BS smartphone app menu designed to appeal to morons who can't use a computer.

Lol, I'm the exact opposite, I was getting random freezes when redeploying but after GU9 they completely dissapeared, strange.
  10. 89xOnoma89

I had a completely different experience from the update today. Not only did everything work, I gained 20+ FPS with the optimization software.
  11. HeadHuntr

It's odd that I got crashes in GU8 and now, in GU9 It fixed them, and no more deployment freeze bug for me!

    Specs:
    nVidia GT 220
    Win 7 32-bit
4GB RAM (Hacked RAM limit, uses all 4GB)
    2.7Ghz Dual Core

That says nothing about forcing anyone to do anything. People can still make regular desktop apps and that will NEVER go away.

It's far less clicking. 1 click to open screen, 1 click to open program.

With a menu, most of your programs will be sorted into folders (unless you want a poorly organized menu that stretches all the way to the top of your screen), so you will be spending more time hovering over folders until you get what you want.

Popping up a screen with all of your programs neatly organized is AWESOME. You will spend less than a few seconds looking at it when reaching for a program, and it provides an amazing way to organize your stuff. You don't need to be looking at your desktop environment while choosing the program you want to open, so it being fullscreen is not an issue.

Many people use their desktop to place a bunch of shortcut icons, as well as having a bunch of shortcuts in their start menu. This means some people manage TWO areas of shortcuts.

The start screen combines these two things into one glorious interface: the Start Screen. One click in the bottom left corner brings it up instantly, and clicking the program you want opens it up in your desktop environment instantly, closing the screen. You don't have to minimize all your stuff to get to your desktop shortcuts, or sift through folders in your start menu. All you need is that one glorious screen full of neatly organized shortcuts.

It is a beautiful system, and you should learn how to use it. Take a look how mine is set up:

    http://i.imgur.com/mo241Mi.png

One click, I get all this in an instant. All of my most used programs(only two are metro apps, everything else is a shortcut) in a very organized setup.

One click, I get my program open in an instant right in my desktop environment. Being fullscreen means I get more space for icons, and I don't need to see what's under it when I'm moving my mouse to click the program I want. It's SUPER EASY to navigate: just flick your mousewheel and it scrolls left/right in a snap, and move your mouse to point at the huge tiles for an easy click for an instant open.

It's INCREDIBLY wonderful and anyone who hates it obviously hasn't bothered to learn why it's so great to use.

Then... just don't use the metro version? Gosh. I use only two metro apps, the default calendar and mail, because they get the job done for what I need and it gives me a nice view of what's happening whenever I have my screen open. (and, again, you're not forced to use these apps if you want something more fully featured like Thunderbird that runs in the desktop environment)

Windows 8 is great on PC and I've given you enough reasoning why people should get over their W8 hatred.

OK so you just posted a wall of text about how wonderful the Metro interface is, and then you say you only use two Metro apps, the mail and calendar LOL.

You missed the point. It's only "confusing" or "poorly organized" to be able to see more than one application at a time, instead of one that runs in a hideous full screen mode, if you're totally computer illiterate.

It's incredibly wonderful on a touchscreen, but I don't have or want one for my desktop. Keep Windows 8 on a tablet. Keep Windows desktop environment on a desktop, where it works well with a mouse and keyboard.

The Metro apps take up the whole screen, so you can't do anything but use that app or flip back to the desktop. That's convenient? That's better somehow? Please explain that. That's the thing I hate about Windows 8 the most, in terms of ergonomics.

I have shortcuts to my games and applications on my Windows 7desktop, which all have full functionality and don't take over my computer the way a Windows 8 app does. I can see what's going on, like I can in the desktop environment on Windows 8, but I don't have to go to a separate environment, which is not designed for a mouse and keyboard interface, and has limited options without going back to the normal desktop environment, so it's really pointless.

It's like they took 7, made it for tablets, and put it on everything. I just can't figure out why anyone has it on a desktop. Like I said, it's the only OS available for the laptop I got, and it's becoming the only option for laptops and prebuilts, and that sucks because it's inconvenient to switch to a smartphone environment on desktops or laptops, when you just want to run an application or adjust a setting that would be easy in Windows 7.

Come on guys can we try to stay on topic and not turn this into a Windows 7 V.S Windows 8 thread. Just agree to disagree. Regardless of who's right and who's wrong an argument on the internet ultimately amounts no nothing.

(I my self mention my opinion of Windows 8 because i expected a reaction of "why were you stupid enough to upgrade")

Is this only affecting people who have PhysX activated? I've got the new drivers but haven't had any problems yet.

    Also:
There are tons of programs that add back the Start Menu and skip past the Metro Screen, and you can get desktop versions of stuff like Skype.
  16. Heretic

it doesnt matter if you activate it in game of not
  17. unjulation

well i got home this morning and encountered the dreaded "black screen of death" - as mentioned i had been haveing crashes for the first time in ps2 and some gui probs outside of the game since updating my graphics drivers

ive come across this prob before - changing graphics driver sometimes works but otherwise its a full re-install

managed to get in to safe mode uninstalled the drivers, cleaned out the reg, installed old drivers - 314

and so far so good - booting fine just gotta check out ps2 now

but i def owe you a pint heritic, much apriciated for the heads up about the drivers, ta chuck

    edited to add -

from this i would say this set of drivers is not the best that nivida have put out, i certainly wont be using them, but its not unknown of them to put out drivers that dont work well with certain progys
  18. baka

After a couple hours of gameplay with Physx on and no crashes, I will tentatively say that the a full removal of the old drivers and Physx (used it's own uninstaller from the control panel first, then the drivers themselves) and installation of the 314 drivers is the solution.
  19. Pyldrvr

not for those of us that were having the problems BEFORE updating the Nvidia drivers...

Having a truly ugly and not very good touch screen UI in a Desktop environment?

Having all its eye candy turned off to pretend it is a "performance boost"?

Anyway Microsoft have finally realised this themselves and are going to release a proper Desktop version of Win8 soon.

Thread topic-wise I'm crashing a lot, usually in any big battle, going to try a driver rollback, but it's hard to tell becasue PS2 has never been stable and CTDs for more have at best been 1 per hour of play and often much more often.
