My thoughts as an old PS1 player

Hi...i have now been playeing PS2 for a couple of weeks after playing in the beta and waiting till i had something that could play it (which funnily enough is a tablet)

When i heard that PS2 was being made i was so full of hope for what it might be like with todays technology and more experience learned from PS1...

I must say im pretty disappointed ...after 2 weeks only i find myself bored to play....there are design decisions that basically make this game into a big BF or COD map..

    Bad points
1: There is no sense of a real front line with proper logistics...people just hit redeploy and warp all over the map directly into a fight....in PS1 people would team up and drive in tank columns or air squadrons from the home base/warpgate...i know not everyone wants to drive or walk miles to a fight but the current system just feels chaotic...you get attacked from EVERY angle when defending a base..including flying troopers which completely negate defensive walls ....front lines dont really seem to exist..or at least it doesnt feel that way.

2: Taking or defending a base has NO meaning whatsoever "you have succesfully defended bla bla " then within 4 seconds point "a" is being capped again...i seem to remember bases being locked back in beta...something needs to change here....this this not bf3 and most of the people want to be a part of a massive ongoing war not some random whack a mole game in a base...we need meaning and progression etc.

3: Alerts are total crap and repeat over and over and mean pretty much nil....

4: Max units are are too easily killed by small arms fire...i thought it was a futuristic exo suit...i remember PS1 u were nearly impervious to small arms fire and had to be killed with AP rounds etc. ...these things cost 450 (same as a tank)

5:Resources???? what resources...i barely even look at them...they mean practically nothing and my tank dying does not really bother me as i can pull another one instantly or very soon.....this also goes into the next point which we all know about..

6: Meta game....i litterally played PS1 for 2 years solid every day ...i was amazed by the scale of it and it was and is completely unique...but i got bored because there was no end game or anything to achieve ...you just fought/died/repeat...im 35 years old and have been playing games for 27+ years (nintendo 8bit + atari st)
Normal un original games do not interest me..especially FPS single player campaigns...they are ALL the same...i need PS2 style - i need multiplayer diversity - i need grand tactics

7: VS look so gay...the weapons are really cool but the leotard spandex **** is so ****** gay...WHY???? its the future not the 80's.

    Good points:
1: Performance...im really impressed that i can play on a tablet and get 30 - 50 fps in medium fights (48v48)
back in beta it was terrible..and that's when i had a custom built gaming desktop...i know some of you moan and have problems..but it is pretty impressive.

2: The new membership deal is very good... i just got it for the first time ( i was waiting for the patch) and i gain certs very easily (and also the new 15 br cert award thing) it was WAY WAY too hard as a new player to get anything at all..and all that did was make me feel impotent unless i spent money...this was a very good move.

Cant think of much else good.,...oh yes its a very good free game..i cannot deny that..but it can be so much better.

I also know that meta and resource is being worked on...=MAKE IT A PRIORITY... the start of the death of PS1 was when they made underground caves which split the population...it was SO SO bad and ruined everything...this new game mode sounds like a bad idea ...please forget COD AND BF we don't want it...we want logistics/front lines and tactics ...not redeployside teleport everywhere side...oh and why can i not airdrop out of a plane without dying??? that was so good in PS1 when a whole squad would airdrop onto a base...am i correect in thinking you now need to be light assault to do this? ?? why.. its THE FUTURE..NO PARACHUTES??

there is more to say but i cant think right now...please remember i am new to PS2 so maybe some stuff i do not understand (like why a utility pouch didnt give me an extra claymore??was it described anywhere ?? no) but this is my first impressions and thats quite important.

    Yes.

The more it heads towards generic fps, the less appeal it has beyond grand scale I think.

And grand scale will become the norm.

PS1 had a much more substatial scale to the game, maps atleast 2.5x bigger than these. you have to imaging computing capacity to run it like that however. old PS1 battles were hundreds of players in one area never had lag, ps2 hundreds of players in one area and its running on fumes.
i miss the dynamic features really. once i saw the class system i knew it was a downer, back from ps1 where i played the "forward engineer" sniper as main, cycler as alt weapon, mines and the ACE tool - and thats what i was looking for here. but its decently ok, you get used to it pretty quick

I'm not certain comparing resources in PlanetSide 2 to the nanite/NTU system in PlanetSide Classic is fair. It is true that, in Classic, a number of other things governed when and where a player could pull a certain vehicle. There were conditions. Be that the case, however, the only harsh one was whether or not you were on the very short cooldown that might even be mitigated by meandering around the ally base recovering Vehicle shields, or fixing your trunk, changing loadouts, gathering randoms as gunners or passengers (which I hope was done sparingly), or just in the act of driving to the battlegrounds, and that was basically four or five minutes. That's about the trunover for a reckless vehicle in PlanetSide 2, and some Vehicles let you burn through two at a time before asking you to wait for an even longer period of time before you have the ability to pull a third.

PlanetSide 2, however, is definitely more stingey in regards to allowing one to pull Infantry doodads with resources, even if the pinch is very often not felt. In argument, there is a condition. In practice, you can just keep throwing grenades with minor breaks in between, almost as frequently as you could lob grenades in PlanetSide Classic. You never used up something like a "pre-allocated number of Thumpers;" you could always reload more. One could try to make the argument that spawns and loadouts contributed to the base NTU drain but it contributed such a very, very insignificant impact to NTU drain that the point is lost quickly.

The main reason the comparison between nanites then and nanites now doesn't work, in my opinion, is because of the shift from base resources to personal resources. The idea was obviously to make players care about their (faction's) income on an intimate level. The first iteration of this system merely punished loss with further loss, however, and that lead to further loss with loss, a downwards spiral like that. Lose bases, lose resources; have few resources, have greater trouble holding bases, and require greater turnaround time after failure. This second iteration, unfortunately, completely defies the hypothetical original reason for personal resources, even if that outcome looks familiar to what was encountered in PlanetSide Classic on a personal level.

I've been playing PS2 for about a month now.

I am a tried and true PS1 veteran.

I like the overall style of the game.

Things that I've noticed in comparison.

    1. No large bodies of water.
    2. No resource drainage.
    3. What happened to Interlink Facilities and Dropship Centers?
    4. Some folks in my outfit have said Orbital Strikes wouldn't make much sense. I've seen plenty of opportunities where an OS could move the fight along.
    5. Continents I miss - Searhus and Cyssor.
    6. The four continents are all shaped the same with different textures. Actually bodies of water would make things more interesting.
The game is FAR better than it was in Beta. I'm glad I waited 2 years before trying it out again. It feels more like PS1, if we could just diversify the geography we're fighting on.

Maps are about the same size, the problem is in PS2 they're cramped full of useless, defenseless capturable facilities and often are designed in such a way that everything is rail roaded with little open ground to actually navigate. We're essentially marching/rolling down giant corridors going from base to base.

As for lag, PS1's continents topped out at a single 96+vs96+ fight essentially, PS2's continents can feature roughly 3-4 times that many per continent.

Otherwise, yeah... game is a glorified Battlefield game in the worst ways. Many design decisions were based on how a battlefield sized match might run, not one featuring hundreds of players over dozens more square kilometers. Also, OHK snipers can go invisible, choppers that can do summersaults, power armor, dudes that can nearly double their health on a whim, engage every target ever, and are essentially self-sustainable... balance wasn't even a consideration.

Gunplay is fun. The concept is awesome. The delivery? The game is a train wreck, and the bleeding populations show it. It wasn't even a year ago Connery was actually active. Now? Feels like it's on life support. It's the strange game I'll enjoy until it either goes into "walking dead" status like PS1, or finally shapes up, even if that means axing the open world concept or at least severely shrinking down the size of the continents, either literally or figuratively (as in, far, FAR fewer lattice facilities.) Whatever happens, I want to play Planetside 2 for the long term, but it's not looking so hot. Sadly, there are people that don't want it to change in the way it needs to to actually keep players coming in.

And you know what? I think I'd be remorseful but happy to see PS2 sink just to say "I told you so" to those folks. Will it sink in? Unlikely. I can only hope someone will brave the frontier of MMOFPS' in the same light as Planetside... at least the 128+vs128+ part. I'm here for the fights, not the open world. People wondered what the point of taking land was in PS1. That question hasn't been answered here, and I don't think it ever will.

I miss being a professional ANT driver. Driving around resupplying bases with a few friends escorting me, the hidden ANT wars where a thing not many experienced, but it was fun.
