Massive urban city-like base?

Do you think that would be cool? Something like 1 giant sprawled out base in the heart of each continet?

A big sprawled out fight to get to the center of the base. Plenty of main roads and pathways for tanks and vehicles. Yet plenty of smaller alleys and pathways for infantry. Lots of buildings and PLENTY of angles and hiding spots. Yet large and spread out enough so it never forces you into a choke point Plus enough criss-crossing pathways to flank your enemy. And the occasional skyscrapers and high-ground towers for snipers and artillery.

I think it would be cool. Even the biggest bases in this game are still pretty small. I think SOE has a problem with creating battlegrounds that are either too open or have too many choke-points. A huge sprawled out urban base could have the best of both worlds!

one of the best looking pieces of concept art was a ruinous industrial complex. it needs to be in game.

    That looks cool!

the developers response to this has been that they could do it but it would it would be a lag pain and would mess up almost everyone's computer.

The old Esamir munition corps had a nice density of buildings, it was the closest thing we had to "urban".

Now we got stupid twin towers :(

Nah, it depends on the polygon count.

If you take the big square buildings it won't matter much. The polygon count has skyrocketed on Esamir since the remake, and Hossin is very resource heavy on this regard.

    :(

With all the things they CAN'T do with this game because of technical issues.... At this point I'd rather take early 2000's graphics just to leave room for enhanced gameplay.

There are some very interesting bases in Hossin, one of which has an underground level (not like the tunnels on Amp Stations, I mean an actual one) and the new Interlink bases are also quite large and have energy bridges that can be activated or deactivated at will by the defenders which is great.

I'd love some sort of city fight map.

Even a Core Combat city fight map would do, if they just toned down the PS1 CC crystals, lasers and 70's discoballs.

The closest thing in the game as it exists or as it existed used to be a shipping crate and shack slum just outsdie of one of the Amp Stations on Esamir, leading part of the way over towards a tower base, before Lattice consumed it. I think it was an annex of one of the satellite bases of the Amp Station, honestly, but it wasn't much to speak about.

The culprit of your woes is map space compression. The map is not nearly large enough to include more than one major city-scape, or a few menium ones, without cramping up, espeically without the city looking too small. The largest base in total area coverage is the J908 impact site on Indar and most of that coverage is only because I am counting the barren canyon walls. You could argue "build an underground facility around the inetrior of the walls" but what would come of it? Capture points [D], [E], and [F]? I guess they could dump the NTU 2.0 inside (when they get to adding that mechanic) and move the Infantry and Vehicle spawn into the complex but there's only so much justification for so many chambers; eventually, you're just producing shanties for the sake of filling space. Like I said though, most bases are small and the distances between them are just as small. There's probably some kind of technical of design justification that exists for this. If you want to put cities on a map and not make it look too awkward, the most logical place is to surround the warpgate with them, even if that does some breaks with the lore. From a historical perspective, building them on the edge of maps also makes sense due to proximity to water.

I ended up meandering. Basically, the continents would need to be bigger to facilitate any large groups of structures without that large group of structures just making the rest of the map cramped or some sort of eyesore. We already have issues in many bases where defensive turrets can be used to attack their neighboring bases, indicating those bases are too close together. The other proposition is that the true bases of the game are incorporated into the cities orm, as another thread is pormpting, outright making one continent a giant city. At that point, however, how is Planetside just another urban shooter in space?

Amp stations already cause some noticeable drain on my performance. A city style base would only make it worse. Unless you make everything square shaped. Then it might work. As simple geometry as possible, let the beauty be in the textures.

    YES
Build it and let each one of us decide if our computers can handle it. If not, there are plenty of other places to fight.

Theres this Biolab on Hossin, the name escapes me, that has its 3 ouposts intergrated into a small "city" biult up around the base of the lab itself.
  13. GSZenith

sure, if you buy everyone 2x Titans and i7s so we might have above 20fps.
  14. usages wnbgrintooth

I would love to see something like that...use basic building designs...nothing fancy and I think many of the computers could handle it...for a battle like that I would be more than happy to lose some pretty scenery to play in.

been repeated for quite a number of times.

WILL KILL FPS. more so to low end PC. nuff said.

Working 6 months on a continent that not everyone is able to play on and will be forced to play on with the Continental Lattice, how tarded are you?
  17. EWarren

I thought Bio-Labs are urbanish, and it has multiple levels / entries that makes battles fairly dynamic. The size just feels right
  18. LowTechKiller

That's a good point. I didn't consider that with the continental lattice, everyone would have to fight there.
But I'm not "tarded"...didn't your mamma teach you to be polite?

Why oh WHY are the "concept art" drawings always better than the final thing.

Concept art Prowler and Vanguard were much better than those we get in the game.

And looking at this concept art landscape for PS2, I just wonder why we can't get such a landscape on a map, that means with less vivid "fun" colors and with more realistic looking topography (mountains looking like mountains).

I also do like how the buildings look in this pic.
  20. hansgrosse

I'd love an entire continent dedicated to urban warfare. I feel it might be workable if they just make most of the buildings giant cubes with a few accessible floors from bottom to top. Keep the geometry very, very simple aside from a couple hallmark buildings scattered around the continent, and as has been suggested, let the building skins do the lion's share of the prettying up.

Imagine LA soldiers jetting between the upper floors of skyscrapers. ESF's weaving between the city blocks. Columns of tanks and troops moving along the city streets while Galaxies hot-drop raiding parties onto the surrounding roofs. It'd be glorious.

Or if not an entire continent, at least make an urban battle island or three.
