Lattice and the infiltrator

I've found infiltrating bases to be a bit less rewarding as you cannot blow generators, cap bases unless you are near the front. A few times I have gone deep into enemy territory, but I don't feel like I can achieve much, except hack a few turrets and assasainate the unwary.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't be like this... but I have noticed that my game style has changed a fair bit. I dont feel like I can contribute as much as I did

Anyone else feeling the game style has changed?

Its definitely changed. I dislike the lattice.
I much prefer the old adjacency method.

In my opinion, it is not the lattice that is the problem - it is the base design and lack of things to do as a (non-combat) infiltrator. If you look at Planetside (1) you will find examples of how good base design paired with the lattice system can make non-combat infiltrating a lot of fun.

Definately this, in ps1 an infiltrator could do a lot more, installing virus's, hacking vehicles, hacking deployables etc

THIS is the real problem, not the lattice. As someone else said, main Infiltrators issue is we lack opportunities to be useful for our team.

We should be the eyes of the team, making recognitions, be the first to approach a structure to let our friends know how many enemies are nearby, where did they deploy minefields, where the defence is lower. Then we should harm our enemies in a very indirect way by cutting off their supplies, disabling their terminals, their turrets, slowing them down, we should be able to deceive and debuff our targets to that we can pave the way to the rest of the army.
Sadtly there's nothing like this in Planetside 2. Our recon darts is awesome but it's overperformed by a cheap vehicle upgrade (Scout Radar), we are spottable when using the recon device, hacking is poor, not engaging and not well rewarded. Terminals and turrets are not easy to hack because their better destroyed than hacked (repairing take much more than counterhacking), and we provide very little firepower a very little versatilty. Last but not least our cloaking device is bugged, perfect for killing but not for slow-paced recognitions.
As it is today this class is fun, but it's just unfinished, inronically we miss the infiltration itself.

In my outfit they use to say in a good team there are at least 2 medics, 2 Engineers, a mix of HA, LA and Max, but no more than 1 Infiltrator. Because it's not needed :(

Of course. You are now officially punished for playing "your way".

SOE is mad!! They sacrifice so much potential JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE TOO LAZY TO GUARD SEVERAL HEXES AT ONCE IN A COORDINATED FASHION !!!
Everyone who is enjoying this nonstop-counting zergs is a hopeless fool. Now everyone is just trying to spam to the horizont with every kind of weapon, cause zergs clash everywhere.
Woooooooooow so much depth to the game. NOT.
  7. Clade333

The infiltrator cloak is useless now, we might as well not have it. I know that enemies can look at me STANDING STILL! and see that i'm there. I can't move by enemies without a wave of bullets killing me in an average of .75 seconds.
  8. Ravenorth

It would be great if infiltrators could hack the upcoming dome shields, which makes them disabled for certain duration of time and cannot be hacked back until the timer hits zero.
  9. Ronin Oni

    FFS...

Lattice isn't the problem. Lattice is a major fix actually.

There is definitely room and, while I wouldn't say "need" definitely beneficial to add some alternate objectives.

The empty base capping whack-a-mole hex system was purely inane. Theoretically it could have worked... in reality, people WILL do whatever they can to make XP for the lowest effort (meaning without fighting) and telling people they should be sitting on empty bases waiting on some POS ghost capper to stop is even more ridiculous.

So instead of just crying about the loss of side objectives (lol at ghost capping being a 'side objective') how about posting ideas on what they could add to the Lattice system.

Use PS1 for inspiration. How can Infils uploading Virii into the enemy lattice be used? What effects would it have?

How about a way to force a lattice disconnect, or a way to disable defense turrets, or what about non-latticed mini-outposts with guard towers, gate shields, and/or ammo towers/pads? Maybe even a light vehicle spawn.

What about a way to hack out a bases shields for a limited time that causes them to change factions... trapping defenders and allowing attackers to surge into the breach?

Instead of being such Negative Nancy's, how about providing something CONSTRUCTIVE

On this note, playing long sessions this weekend in the new Lattice Indar I found my Infil RIDICULOUSLY PLAYABLE. (Not OP, but able be a part of the Team, and contribute and get XP)

Yes, the Lattice dumbs down the game options/experience in many ways (and the "smaller sandbox" is a whole other issue for discussion: smaller sandbox but better built it seems), but a "perfect storm" (bunch of changes all coming together at same time) has left me with an Infil Class and a Lattice playground where I find myself constantly being able to play effectively.

Let me explain. Here are some of the changes of note:
    1) Lattice = only 1 active battle max in at each front = fewer battles, bigger battles/zergs, more compact unit concentration, and more stalled fronts
    2) Recon Dart XP + Recon Dart Effect = powerful (good for team) and rewarding (good for Infil useing it) tool for bigger, concentrated battles. More compact unit concentration means (1) more targets to light up, and (2) easier access to Ammo Packs to resupply
    3) One-way Spawn Shields + bigger zergs + Fixed Speed, Slower Cap Times = play duck hunt from behind spawn shields AND spam Recon Dart in each direction for XP/key intel. This may *seem* like an XP farm with no real contribution to the game, but it actually helps set up your team to break out of the Spawn Room and counterattack the enemy: I've been in multiple battles this past weekend where this happened. I've watched as my team used my radar to identify weaknesses in the enemy line to break through, lock onto and eliminate lit up threats, and retake points. And clearing the vultures from easy perches around the spawn room with a BA is just as important to set-up a counterattack. I've even sacrificed myself by repeatedly running into the enemy jaws to get single Recon Dart shots off to light up key Cap/resource/troop cluster points, and help my team get the better field intel to counterattack.
    4) <Home> gives you Instant Action that tells you where it's going to go (just hit <Home> again to cancel if needed) + Instant Action now tries to keep you on the same continent = really great.
    5) The Lattice changes + current Deploy + new stats on map of troop numbers (just hover mouse over zone on map screen) = now takes you immediately to the action you want, know roughly what action to expect, and don't even really Need Instant Action anymore (though it's a great alternative depending on how you want to get to the battlefield or enjoy the randomness).
    6) Smart Base Design = feels more like a battle. No more Swiss Cheese bases, now we have fortresses that feel right and where you have to work to win. Now I see an Engineer beam light up a dead base turret and I have to work to get in position to take him out, or maybe make the call that my current position is overall better to handle other threats and let him go. Very cool feel.

I die a lot faster in the new system with all the compact bodies. But I get a lot more done with each life: more kills, more good dart intel, more challenges to work around, higher rate of (short term, small scale tactical) choices being made in the faster and larger flow of battle.

I extreme range snipe (Parallax + 12x Scope), I close range snipe (Parallax + Suppressor), I Close-Quarters-Combat (SMG), I recon dart, I spawn Sunderers, I hack, I destroy generators, I ambush those repairing generators, I infiltrate. And usually each battle/zone/etc. means I have to change my choice of those options to best fit what I am facing: no one style all the time will work. Sometimes I have to bust out the 12x BA and Snipe hordes of HA/Infil/Engineers for 15 minutes in the dunes outside of Indar Excavation Site. Sometimes I have to infiltrate to enemy controlled Zurvan Pump Station to hack a vehicle terminal and spawn a Sunderer to drive up and deploy at the new sweet spot at the southeast base of The Crown to spark our teams invasion there. Sometimes I have to move up with my Team's room-by-room assault with my Dart and SMG to light the way for my team to precision storm the defenses. Sometimes I sit in a high vantage point with my 12x BA and chain spot enemies sweeping south into Quartz Ridge Camp and watch as I get the Spot XP bonus and then we break the sweep and begin a counterattack, letting me know I am helping my team pick out, identify, and set-up them to eliminate key threats.

I finally spent the Certs to max out my Dart this weekend, because I now feel it plays such a key role for the class. Recon Dart in the current system and changes finally seems to be the class defining tool that repairtool6 talked about. I've maxed both Scout Radar Flash (did this about a week ago) and Recon Dart (did this during this weekend) and I find different and good uses for both. And when they overlap, that's fine too, cause they work well together. Recon Dart is a great way to help direct ally forces into specific attack or support actions, like an orchestra conductor, as you aim key shots to uncover enemy nests and specific intel on how to dismantle them or concentrate firepower.

If anyone has any questions on how find a way to operate in the Lattice, let me know. I will cover in detail for any scenario, what I do in that scenario. This is just my time from playing a bunch this weekend, so maybe more time playing will change my perspective.

I am also very happy they delayed the Infil update. I really want them to make the changes to the class that make sense for the future game. With so many recent game changes, adjusting the Infil now could easily end up making us better for a game that no longer exists.

This might be just me, but having the south eastern warp gate on Indar makes it especially hard to infiltrate because of the narrow canyons and no alternate routes to take. Been having an exceptionally good time on Amerish/ Esamir lately, many medium sized fights there which are honestly my favorite. It's much more engaging that shooting endless waves of mindless zergers for little impact. It's a shame we won't be seeing these fights very often anymore. Plus my computer can run decent in those fights, it looking like I will have to make some upgrades in the future if I want to be able to participate in mass lattice fights with a decent frame rate.
  12. haldolium

    Exactly.

I absolutely do not get why they also had to remove every totally legit objective from the game and dumbing down the capture process...

I think this sucks not only (but of course primary) for the infi but for everyone. I still find myself automatically turning towards the SCU generator room just to be disappointed over and over again that it's gone.
  13. redsevenski

I'm sure you've considered it, but I find both the wraith flash and the ESF with ejector seat are great transport methods for getting to places they wont expect you. The harasser (especially when fitted with nitro) can be good also due to its speed and the terrain it can cross but its easy to spot and I don't know how useful it'd be for breaking out from that warpgate.

Hi Oldmaster... these problems were already with us, before the lattice. This thread is on how the lattice is affecting infiltrator gameplay. But thanks for taking tthe time :)
  15. RoMoronik666

You make a lot of good points zaspacer. I personally play a more of a lone-wolf style, which is probably why our experiences are differing.
I admit i have found the battles more exciting though.

Its just that the canyons and impassable terrain have made it quite difficult to infiltrate some areas, without wading through a sea of enemies first. And if you get past to a safe area, you cannot take out generators, cap bases. I feel that there is only so much I can do to hinder the enemy, when I should be in a prime location to do so.

I realise some people thought ghost-capping and gen-blowing was wrong and a cheap way of getting XP, but SOE could have simply removed any XP gain (unless connected to your territory). When I play, I play to help my faction, and I would still make missions to blow up generators even without XP gain.

It just seems that the infiltrator's role has been diminished even further in respect to the bad base design. Whereas their role as sniper and spotter (with the recon device) has been increased.

I'm not saying that this is a BAD THING, I'm just making an observation. It will take some adjustment. Since the lattice came into effect I havent played once on any of the other continents.

I think overall the lattice has made things more exciting by concentrating the population and drawing up battle-lines. I just think there should be some sort of reward for infiltrators going into enemy territory and sabotaging things which have some sort of effect to the front line.
  16. Scout Sergeant Cyrus

There is another thing that could improve the lattice system for the infiltrator....an ability to connect an ally territory to an enemy territory (via hacking of course, and it would give the enemies in the area a warning that it was happening by a flashing icon...similar to a generator that is about to explode. This could be permanent, or it could be temporary, but if it is temporary then it should last for a fairly large amount of time). This can also prove to be a double edged sword, as now the enemy can pour on the pain strait into that friendly territory, so it would have to be used with caution and you would have to have a team prepared to charge on in to take that territory.

Thats about all I can add to be constructive to the Lattice System.

Personally, I dislike the Lattice System, it greatly hampers spec-op type missions and greatly hampers the ability for anyone to Infiltrate behind enemy lines. Why? Well there isn't much we can do back there. Sure we can disable their turrets and terminals (by hacking them, or by destroying them) but, chances are that they will be repaired/re-hacked long before your allies actually break through to your area.
The Lattice System also STRONGLY discourages single squads. There is VERY little that a single squad can really do now, aside from assisting a zerg (in fact, the only thing they can do is either attempt to hold off a zerg, or attempt to help a friendly zerg....there are no other options anymore). It has also become nearly impossible to cut off large defensible territories (it can be done, but usually its not your nation that cut off the territory, usually its one of the other nations and just "happened" not something that was planned). I often remember getting cut off while defending an amp station as the enemy was forced to go around us because we were just so powerful, and then us having to frantically attempt to reconnect ourselves so that our territory would count for the Alert (or to frantically redeploy because the enemy is closing on the warpgate).

These options need to make a comeback

So why not be able to destroy gens off lattice?
I don't expect to cap the base anymore than I did behind enemy lines with the hex, but it was rewarding to have the next base nice and warm when the platoon had the current objective wrapped up. just seemed like an appropriate niche for a cqc infil. Decent resistance one hex away from front lines, and decent reward as well.

  20. redsevenski

That was a bug fix, not a change in relation of hex to lattice. You can still hack everything and be sat there ready to cap gens and flip the point as soon as the cap at the preceding base is done.

The majority of times this was done was simply cert farming rather than trying to help out their faction, so personally I'm gald for this change.
