is the scythe light ppa worth it?

Hi all, I want to start using ESfs. I played around with the light PPA for a while and liked it. I have 300 certs and want to save up for lolpods. So is the light ppa a good gun?
  2. Akeita

Lol, Light PPA is 100 certs, if you made 100 certs with it already then clearly it is worth it. Obvious answers, just be aware that once you use PPA and you have no secondary as AA lock on missiles, you're dead as soon as you meet another ESFs

I haven't made 100 with it already, I just trialed it. I have 300 certs total right now.

Light PPA is best used against infantry whilst lolpods can do both. I would get the Light PPA right now and use it to farm your way to lolpods. That is what I do (when I remember what the plan is that is...)
  5. Arcturus314

Ok I'll get it. Thanks for the help!
  6. Akeita

Then you will actually need additional 200 cert to get thermal to actually "farms"
  7. z1967

True, but they do have 300 so that wouldn't be too much of a problem. (PS, thermal PPA + AB pods is the best for farming. Can rek all the noobs with it and run away with AB when other air shows up. Hard to use against air though :|)
  8. Arcturus314

Ok. I'll get it, thermal, then save up for lolpods.
  9. Arcturus314

Umm thermal doesn't light up infantry in the VR.
  10. Arcturus314

So how would it help against them?
  11. Akeita

But they will in real fight, the key to farm infantry on any vehicles is Mr. thermals, it highlight infantry/vehicles yellow, and everything else blue, clearly this is stolen NC technology

Infantry only... Go out and try Air Hammer/Hornets, all dem delicious tanks :D, plus AH 1 shot infantry most of the time depend on range..
  12. Arcturus314

I would get hornets but they are 1k certs

If you're going to take PPA.....
Use it with MAX afterburner fuel pods, Scout Radar (so you can find those pesky stray infantry, also nets you +10 XP per allies kill over big fights :D), Stealth, and Racer frame

If you get locked onto, RUN. If you see an enemy ESF, RUN! If you're getting hit by flak RUN RUN RUN!

The most important thing to do is always find where your faction has a pocket of AA nearby. You're useless against enemy air and NO secondary will make you competitive vs any dogfighter with any skill at all... so it's better to just out run them. If they have a dog-fighting nosegun, AB pods, and Racer, you're screwed since the Scythe is the slowest ESF, but if you can get to AA in time they may save your bum. Any lock-on scrub pilots are easier to outrun.

You have ONE purpose... FARMING INFANTRY. You also support ground troops with your Scout Radar for anywhere you're fighting.

LOLpods are generally better, they let you engage tanks as well as infantry, and keep a nosegun that you can dogfight with, but you can't outrun and you don't have any A2A secondary, so dedicated A2A pilots will have an advantage over you and you'll need to be a fair bit better than them to win. Also lolpods require a lot more resupplies as you'll run out of ammo fast.

So IMO a properly specced PPA is better for starting pilots. You don't need to worry about dogfighting skill (the hardest skill to master... particularly when you're new) and give you good infantry killing power at a very low cost. I still use my PPA Scythe.

Oh, Get thermal on it ASAP. You have 300 certs? Perfect. 100 for PPA, 200 for Thermal. Level up the rest of your ESF as I outlined above. Try to fly near friendly ESF's when you can so they can help protect you from enemy ESF's.

You'll still get killed... a fair bit... a LOT at first while you learn it... but it's fun as hell.

    so are lolpods...

they each have advantages. I have my lolpods since launch so I don't have much reason to get Hornets... not sure what I'd get now...

    prolly lolpods :p
