i decided to make the move from radeon and get a nvidia card because i really wanted physx so i bought a gtx 670 which is arriving in a couple days. i remember seeing tons of threads about physx not working or causing crashes and i want to know if those are still an issue.
I've noticed they've removed PhysX checkbox and gave an option to customize GPU Particle Quality instead. So if it lags you can always tone it down, not that you would have to with that graphics card. Congrats on switching to Nvidia and welcome to the family by the way You're in for a great experience. PhysX used to be buggy for some of my outfit members - causing crashes and lags but I've personally had it on ever since it became available and never had any kind of problems. It looks amazing by the way.
I just bought a gtx 770 thinking it would run physX perfected and I have a i5 3570k cpu and my game crashes every 20 min with physX enabled, which is a shame because the game looks amazing with physX on, it's actually one of the main reasons I upgraded to a Nvidia card. Timberwoff what version of PhysX are you using?
I tried to search the forums for the answer, but couldn't find any - are there any plans for letting ATI users with powerfull rigs enjoy at least some of the effects? In Borderlands 2 my CPU does the job, and although it causes a significant fps drop, at least the game gives me the option to turn it on.
My game typically runs PhysX pretty well. When I saw they added a fidelity option instead of a simple on/off check box, I was excited.. not because I knew I'd get significantly better performance, but I knew I could minimize what little impact on performance it had. Unfortunately it doesn't at all solve the core issue with PhysX which is crashing. For months now, I've tried turning PhysX after any patch thinking "okay, maybe they fixed it this time", only to crash at some point there after. Of course coincidence is always something to bare in mind and for the longest time I did. Especially for a game that does as much as Planetside 2, unexpected and seemingly random crashes aren't unusual. However I wouldn't be so skeptical if my random crashing didn't exponentially drop throughout the course of the night, after turning PhysX off. How significant? With PhysX on, I crash anywhere between fifteen minutes to an hour before I crash. However turning it off, I can easily exceed 3-5 hours of constant play. I've even gone whole nights without ever crashing, as long as PhysX is off entirely. My drivers are all completely updated, including PhysX. I've got a clean, well maintained system. And to add insult to injury, when we all got the patriot flare gun, both my friend and I decided to turn PhysX on just to see if it looked better. No sooner than an hour, he disconnected - crashed, and about 2-3 minutes after, I crashed. Coincidence seems highly unlikely at this point. What really blows my mind though is that during the period of time where it wasn't officially in the game - enabled through the user settings INI, not only was my performance impressive but my crashing ratio was virtually unchanged. Somehow the particle effects grew significantly more unstable after release than they were during. Ironic but in my experience, true.
PhysX is still so broken it is embarrassing. It crashed constantly on my 670. Now I got a 770 and it continues to do so. Ofc: Clean install of latest drivers - does no difference. If I enter a big battle I can expect to crash within a few minutes. Game just crashes without any error message. So just turn it off.
670 for some weaks, physx crash everytime i retry it at a new patch need an nvidia driver updated for ps2. i bought an nvidia for ps2 too, incredible they dont work their driver for this game.
With the advent of the GPU Particle Quality option, I played with GPU Particle Quality set to Low for about 2 weeks, but finally turned it off today. I love the effect, but it just hits my FPS too hard with rates dipping into the 30s routinely and occasional freezes lasting up to 1 second, and occasionally a CTD. Dern. With GPU Particle Quality set to 0 I usually get terrific FPS.
The other night I decided to try Physx again, so I set GpuPhysics to 1 from 0..... crashed to desktop withing 30 minutes. Set it back to 0 and game stays steady. Disappointing really.
PhysX for me looks great and doesn't hit me too hard on FPS even with 16GB of RAM, an i5-3210M and a 2GB GTX 660M. My issue with it right now is that I have to completely fracking restart my computer, then launch PS2, and then physX actually goes to the GPU like it's supposed to. If I either crash or exit the game, then I have to restart my computer again to get it to work right, or it pushes off to the CPU and doesn't work. What the heck gives?
Upgraded from a Radeon 5850 to GTX 670. haven't crashed this much since beta. i guess i have to turn PhysX off for the foreseeable future, shame i got a Nvidea for this purpose. Not totally unhappy with the purchase but am a little disappointed
Yes Physx is still broken...and will never be fixed. SOE's priority right now is making more helmets, camo, rims and grills.
You obviously missed the recent tweet from Smedley, didn't you? "the PS2 team will be shifting their priorities to focusing purely on optimization. It's unacceptable as it stands. this is going to take some understanding on your part players - when we focus on this it means other stuff waits. But this is critical." - President of SOE; 20 Aug, 2013
Actually I did miss that tweet I don't have twitter. This is good news no more helmets, camo, rims, trims, horns, grills and whatever else until performance issues are stamped out. I wait patiently for the 500mb to 2Gb GU15, 16, 17, 18....whatever dedicated solely to addressing these issues.
Unfortunately this postpones Hossin too but honestly, having played it in the test server, it's got performance issues in it's own right. So perhaps that was what finally woke them up about this issue and drove them to finally take a proactive step toward sorting it out. Having an 8-core AMD processor, it's particularly good news for me.
the problem isn't your drivers, it's the game. PhysX works flawlessly in many on other games on recent NVidia drivers. the problem is, of course, SOE.
