Long story short, I used to play PlanetSide 2 a ton on my old MacBook and then on a then-new laptop. I had fun and even had great moments that I still keep on an external drive as video recordings to this day. But I left the game 2-3 years ago (logged on last in 2016 just to see how it held up(due to multiple factors, including IRL factors, limited amounts of content support at the time and degrading performance on the machine i played on, which had a quad-core hyperthreaded Core i7 4700MQ and a GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5, played at 768p. Fast-forward to the present and I recently got a new system, with a Core i7 7700H and a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of GDDR5 So I'm really itching to return to the game to see how my new system handles it (probably not very well due to the engine's shortcomings but we'll see) and also seeing how much has evolved. Is it worth going back, especially since I'll probably be starting anew as NC (was VS)? Been hearing mixed responses regarding the state of the game
I just peed a little... Seriously though (im a console player (waits for it........) and i pretty much did the same thing. Deleted the game 2 yrs ago and have only just returned 2 months ago. Theres been changes that have enabled the dying pop to still find battles and have fun. Its seriously a great game, there are some new additions that i really like (not going into it all sorry) and some that i dont. All in all im glad that ive come back and it appears as though the devs are really trying to still make it work. The player base for us console players however is dwindling and i dont see it getting better, as sad as that it. I hear there is a slew of new things on the test server so to answer your question, yes, it probablly is worth a re download. You really havent got anything to lose apart from a few hours.
100% come back if you liked it before. The game will run great on your computer, especially once you tweak your user options file, which is sadly a necessity. You can do some research here http://iridar.net/planetside2/performance-guide/ The game was seriously wrecked with the last two major patches, Combined Arms Initiative and Meltdown, but the worst parts of those are being addressed in a very short time with the next big patch, so you may want to wait till that comes out in a week or so. Or you can dial in your settings and find some good fights in the meantime, just know that the crappy continent lock system is getting replaced very soon.
Yeah, lots of us went on a walkabout for a few years. It's good to be back. The rust is gonna hurt bad but it falls off real quick. There have been a lot of quality of life improvements. Despite ********, balance is better now overall than it was years back. There has been some new content too if you haven't seen (harassers, Valkyries, couple new guns here and there like pelters, new LMGs, SMGs. Hardlight barriers, etc..) Implants are better now. Populations seemed to bottom out a couple years back then climbed just slightly and remained stable. The big fights still happen all the time.
No. Game is deteriorating almost as fast as the server performance. If I had to venture a guess, it's strongly 30% Brazil trash these days, which makes the laughable server performance even more hilarious.
I've played pretty consistently since beta and I'm having just as much fun now as I ever had. My perspective is from an infantry player that dabbles in lightnings/MBTs on occasion.
NO. Not unless you enjoy extreme lag causing every player in the battle to teleport around wildly like there's no tomorrow, laggy hit registration and extreme input latency on every action and have that happen consistently every time you log on and try to play for weeks. They shut down the asia servers so now there's also a plethora of high-ping asian players on Connery which is already suffering from severe server latency, so you can just imagine what that is like The literally unplayable server latency notwithstanding, they also introduced so many god-awful "features" that completely ruined the game in so many ways it'll make your head spin. Virtually all the weapons and gear you used in the past are useless now and have been completely nerfed into oblivion. Thermals are gone. Anti-air weapons like the walker and (formerly) the basilisk are now virtually useless unless the aircraft are flying incredibly low. Rocket launchers now have larger ammo capacity but are also so weak that by the time you damage anything you'll be dead. They made tomcats magazine size 2 but also nerfed them to hell so they're basically useless. Virtually all the tank guns have now been normalized into the same thing, so there's barely any distinction between a HEAT, AP, or HE cannon now (unlike before, where they actually had specialized roles and uses) Now they're all equally useless. They buffed the crap out of fire suppression so its completely monopolized the utility slot on ESFs. virtually every pilot in th e game now runs vehicle stealth and fire sup thanks to that, rendering all other items that go in those slots basically useless AI weapons no longer effective against infantry, AA weapons no longer effective against air, and AT weapons no longer effective against vehicles To add insult to injury they're now making other classes' weapons available to players over a certain battle rank (essentially rendering the entire concept of a class system meaningless). They added ridiculous nonsense like "implants" which is basically some dumb pay to win thing that gives people psuedo godmode and other weird perks like auto spotting etc, shields for sundies (as if blockade armor and an army of engineers wasn't strong enough) cloaks and mounted guns on flashes, so now players just get in a flash, cloak and drive around a deployed sunderer repeatedly running people over with impunity some weird rapid-fire rocket launcher for light assaults (basically trying to make light assaults behave like heavies but with jetpacks - a colossally dumb idea on so many levels) a construction system which was initially kind of cool until they added the HIVE mechanic which throws off the entire flow of the game some kind of orbital strike thing that can wipe out a whole base. apparently they nerfed it so it cant target bases anymore but people found an exploit to do it anyway by shooting the targeting dart at an aircraft and flying over the intended target bunch of dumb weird new "NSX" weapons which feel weird and out of place in the game psuedo-smgs you can equip in your pistol slot esfs are apparently slower now (or maybe its just me, but they seem slower) so much other dumb crap I'd have to sit here for hours typing out a literal novel to cover it all. Planetside 2 is dead
Cool I care a lot I'm also in my late 20s, "kid" Why don't you go write another cringy post about how you think hardware specs have anything to do with network latency
Connery is Dead and will frustrate you. If you decide to come back, play on the Emerald server and you will have plenty of fun and should be able to find some quality squadmates to help get you back to speed.
Truth is most people don't care why their game is not running smoothly and lots of people confuse all these terms, latency, framerate lag, ping... They are all bad either way. Let the dude give a **** that he can't play properly. I don't know what you're refering to with the 1000 network latency, other people are getting high numbers but not quite this. If there is some problem on your end that's making your latency jump then well its probably not hardware, sounds like a ports issue (given my knowledge is absolutely minimal I could be wrong). TLDR server latency is not just on the servers end 100% of the time.
I have heard some horrific troubles on the EU servers. Emerald though (US East) is running fine. We have some EU folks join during day, but don't get Asia folks during late night like the West coast server does.
Its on the servers end. The game admins have officially admitted both on this forum and on Reddit that there's a huge problem on their end, and hundreds of players so far have come forward to complain about it. Definitely nothing to do with 'ports.' I'm a computer science major and software engineer with 10+ years of professional experience.
This game is always worth returning to, unless your hung up on kill/death ratios like many people who have no life do. People always ask what my k/d ratio is, who cares, I let my son play it a lot and he used my characters because I have a lot of stuff unlocked. Just play a game and have fun, learn to laugh a lot.
