Like it or not, the S-AMS is situationally disposable because of how people are using it. It should be the driving force of an assault and the backbone of a defense, but everyone rolls them up to the front line as if it were natural. Putting on right near the action is an attempt to push up the front of the fight, which is good but risky. If it is easily destroyed, the front line was not pushed successfully and more fighting is required. The only sunderer that should be protected is the one that is far aback at the furthest point where Infantry and vehicles taking part in the assault originate (and S-AMSes are put into large base vehicle bays because SOE doesn't want to realize that a spawn shack off to the side of the dump rather than in the most important building is a terrible idea).

To get to that "main" sunderer, anyone - especially a squishy Engineer - should not be able to just run or Flash up to it and blow it to kingdom come. There should be lots of troops in that area, accompanierd by Armor being repaired, refitted, etc.. The common problem with attacking forces is that they don't or can't (Infantry rendering distance) properly organize their ranks, thus that everything must rush to the front line. If the crux of your battle relies on a combat vehicle that is right on top of the enemy, then something is terribly wrong with your strategy. Until the army has established itself, the front line vehicle is the ambitious vehicle that pushes, and can be pushed back, or can be taken out.”

I forgot to mention, the first turret android will constantly ask you if you "Saw that?" when he shot that guy rushing the Sunderer.
