Developer Thread: New Scopes and Sights

Alright, you've asked for it RadarX:

    1) Dots are still very pale in color and blend in too much environment and especially action effects. The worst is actually fighting vanu due to high particle effect volume where the mark becomes next to invisible due to laser spam.

    2) The 5 point ones are very bad.. in a fight with all the visual spam, i've mistaken corner bracket for the center dot soooo many times. Makes them uselss. Even the circle with dot is pretty bad as sides are same color and thickness as the dot.

    3) NC got one really good scope - the new blue shevron - can it be adjusted to be slightly thinner?

    4) some of the new scope models take up a significant amount of screen when not in ADS

    5) Can we please finally get size and color selection for the center dot? You know, like every other game out there? I want it to be some acid bright color so even in a fight i can tell where my mark is.

    6) Why can't we get UNIFIED scopes? So if I unlock the 2x Iron sights on one gun - it is unlocked on all that normally have it as option? I'm OK with higher price, it's just that doing it every time is a pain. Better yet - make unified scopes as described above to w hich we can apply any style of reticles.

    7) Can we get an option for "auto switch" of scope to thermal at night time? Just a checkmark that would work for weapons that have it unlocked?

It's a welcome change, they indeed seem to perform better.
But looking further away, we all know what scopes are best: customizable ones. Size, color, display.
Also, vehicle HUDs could use some love. At least for VS when flying the blue HUD blends in the blue sky... NC yellow into the sun + sunlight. TR side is happier, maybe except in dark places.
    SO... customization FTW!

I love the way the new scopes behave. The NS reflex sights seem much nicer. My issue is the brightness on several of the new colors. The blue T scope and weird red oval-thing in particular completely disappear when aiming towards a light source or the sky. I was expecting the yellow to really stand out but it is very faded. I also don't really get what the Vanu huge purple disc is going for. I think the paler red 5 dot is an improvement and I really like the green T and blue chevron (it's a little wide).

That's not broken, that's actually intended. The crosshair does not move away from the center of the screen, it's now a flat overlay on the center of the screen, which is where the bullets come from. The rest of the gun still moves with the player model. It's a bit disorienting, but at least you can now accurately hit your targets.

Love this update SOE, my HSR has skyrocketed.

I wouldn't mind all scopes across each weapon type being "unified".

So if you buy a scope for a bolt action sniper rifle, it's unlocked for all bolt action sniper rifles.
If you buy an optic for a carbine, that optic is unlocked for all carbines.
Buy an optic for an Assault Rifle, that optic is unlocked for all Assault Rifles.
Buy an optic for an LMG, that optic is unlocked for all LMGs.

I'd even be fine with prices being tripled or even quintupled (90 or 150 certs) if it meant we could use them evenly across all weapon platforms of the same class.

Of course, vehicle optics should remain as they are, given that "unifying" them would make them exceedingly expensive, and in many cases there are not enough of the same weapon class to justify the higher prices. :)

Just going to say a big thank you to whoever helped to put these new scopes in.

There are some small things that need to be fixed, but overall they are fantastic.

Much better than the previous scopes.
  7. Stopper

Yes ! Three great ideas ! That would be awesome !

I'm not sure if it was mentioned already, since there are a lot of replies to read through here.

How about some horizontal mil markers on the tank gun sights, and maybe some indicators that show the gun's horizontal and vertical angle in degrees relative to the tank's chassis? I wouldn't mind paying certs for this as an upgrade, either. The current sights don't give much to go on in terms of targeting tanks at range. Of course, an actual rangefinder would be cool, but I'd be happy with something similar to Zeiss sights:

Instead of adjusting the sight for range, of course, you could simply adjust your aim point using vertical hash marks of some kind positioned based on ranges. So, for example, the first one underneath the aim point could be for 200m, the second for 400m, etc.

I feel like adding something like that might make tank battles a bit more interesting.

The chevron scopes need work. They are way too fat to make meaningful use of. It is not possible to use the lower chevrons for drop compensation (especially for suppressed work) simply because you cannot see the target behind them. Please make those scopes have thinner chevrons. Do it for the few people who actually use suppressors with their sniper rifles.

For the reflex sights, most of them aren't as bright and contrasted as they should be. Some of them have terrible color selections (dark purple!?) that is too dark to use. There are a few that have too-small reticules in the center; pretty much just the green Cross types where the center cross is TINY and does not glow all that much. I can certainly use them and the small size helps it with precision aiming, but I really have to consciously keep track of it to not lose it so it isn't practical at all as a close-range optic. Give us the ability to pick color too, I think that's a very common request by this point.

And I kind of miss the old scopes with the physical crosshairs, especially for the Tacti-Eye and TrueSight, but that's just personal preference.

a few of the TR scopes kinda really have to much context, to much un needed detail like "Terran" and "Open Cross" but the main issue is they are not bright enough against all surfaces like the NS "Nico cross", The Chevron could do with being thinner and maybe take the . out of the TR T sight so its more like the Cross sight

I hope you see this but what is holding you guys back from re-adding the x6 Thermal Scope for the sniper?

Could tweak it so that it cant see anything past its limited sight. *Targets past 150m (I assume that's how far the normal scope sees) are hidden behind a dark silhouette.*
  12. SupaFlea

Mainly because it gives snipers a extreme night time advantage over everyone, the normal scope wouldnt help you spot cloakers at that range and you cant see the cloakers shimmer with night vision
  13. TheBloodEagle

I think a better system would have been different optic shapes and the color could have been chosen by the player in graphic settings. Instead the different shapes are color specific.

Who knew reticles would get everyone excited. Just as long as there is something to show where the bullets are going to land idc.
  15. Frostiken

The Vanu-style 2x scope is almost impossible to see.
  16. Nalothisal

    We
Well considering that they changed thermals so now you can't see cloaked units anyway, I don't think that would be an issue.
  17. SupaFlea

well you don't need Thermal to see cloakers at night, within a certain distance you can still see them moving with the naked eye but if we use a NV at night as we do you cant see that shimmer at all, now give cloakers the ability to easily aim at ever one else during a night mission while outside of a certain range we cant see them due to lighting, put a silencer on it and you have invisible death that just has to stay in scope to see everything coming at them clear as day where as we could see them to fire at unless we are right on top of them. I play LA and Cloaker primary so I'm not bias I'm giving a equal point of view same regards as I think Max's should have great resistance to small arms fire and i never play a MAX but that's going off topic
  18. Nalothisal

Ah but doesn't the NV scope stop showing targets at 50+m and practically blinds you if they are closer?
  19. JudgeNu

    I like the overall changes.

I particularly like the CURRENT NS 2x circle/dot and the models are an improvement for sure.
I am not a fan of the faded circle on test.
Why not use traffic light green?
I actually may use the single chevron.
It seems to be a good alternative.
Is not green the easiest color for the human eye to detect?

What I do miss is the old NS 3.4x scope with the red dot.
The scope model was round with little to no extra baggage.
However it was NS and only available on NS Weapons.

    Something like this scope.

I really hate the new look of the NS SMG sights. Before they were small and looked cool, but now they are unnecessarily bulky. Definitely a step down, aesthetically speaking.

Loving the yellow dot sights, except I'd rather have yellow dot with the circle on the x1 scopes. I can't stand any of the other new ones on the NC side, especially since the yellow dot is the clearly superior option for visibility.
