Hello while I believe this game is capable of using crossfire/SLI when I run both my 7950's I see no net gain and sometimes reduced performance. Is there something going on with crossfire/SLI for which I should disable a card when playing PS2 for the time being?

Crossfire does not work, and hasn't worked for a very long time.

It does give you worse performance than a single card, in the majority of cases.

The articles are long, but worth reading and watching the videos. AMD has admitted that there's a serious problem, and they're attempting to fix it.

SLI works fine(though this game apparently has issues supporting it) and actually gives you better performance than a single card.

Crossfire works just fine for me, with two 7950's.

@ OP, try RadeonPRO and set the Crossfire mode to AFR or Supertile.

I prefer Supertile, as it removes all micro-stutter for me, while AFR has some stutter for me in PS2, but feel free to experiment with both.

The downside with Supertile is that it loads the GPU to 99% (due to the way it handles the workload), resulting in higher temperatures (non-issue if you don't OC too high and/or have a decent cooling solution), but the actual FPS is the same as the AFR mode (60-80% load).

Crossfire hasn't worked at all for a very long time. AMD is just now working on a prototype driver, that is nowhere near finished to attempt to fix the problem.

You might want to read the article. Or you can read the part where the guy who made this thread read the article I linked him to, took one of his AMD cards out, and found out that it really DOES work better with a single card, instead of two cards in Crossfire.

I used crossfire for 3 way widescreen for awhile on my 6970s without a problem. My friend now has those two cards and says he gets stutter problems, but the fix is simply running the game in windowed fullscreen mode. If you want to really enjoy this game though SLI is the way to go anyway... widescreen... physx.. ultra setting.. nothing so amazing.

Regardless, the HUD is not setup for widescreen and now that they've broken the FOV fix last patch using a vehicle is horrible. Pre GU7 it sure was amazing!

    TLDR: Try windowed fullscreen.

Or I could rely on FIRST HAND experience with 2 7950s where if I disable CF I get HALF the frames that I get with CF enabled.

Windowed mode disables CF... Check with Afterburner, 2nd GPU has 0 utilization.
I'd recommend your friend tries setting Supertile CF mode in RadeonPRO, it's simply amazing in my experience.

Crossfire works fine mate , i get perfect scaling on my 6970's ..

You actually don't, and unless you have a setup like this guy's to do direct frame capture from a DVI output and measure frame times/height/drops(or simply compare it to a single card side by side) you're probably fooled into believing it is. You'd especially think this if you use a benchmark or tool like Fraps to get framerates.

Try taking one card out like CHEF did. He read the articles, watched the videos, took one card out and told us that he's now getting BETTER performance with a single card. That makes sense since Crossfire is broken, and here's the explanation of specifically how its broken.

Even the brand new 7990 does not work as of release. AMD is working on a prototype driver that fixes some of the issues, but it still can't address Eyefinity(since AMD can't do multi monitor frame compositing in hardware).
  9. XRIST0

Crossfire works fine , i get perfect scaling .

Im not asking , im telling you ...

I have been using Crossfire 6970's since beta , during the beta Crossfire didnt work correctly but it does now and has for quite a while .
  10. BlackDove

And I'm telling you: BS. It DOESN'T work unless you're using the prototype drivers, which aren't released yet(maybe third party software like RadeonPro) and even then, it doesn't work very well.

Read the articles. Crossfire hasn't worked for a long time. Most of the extra frames you're getting in that "perfect scaling"(no multi-GPU scales perfectly) are runts or drops, with high frametime variance.

    It works.
  12. XRIST0

What are these prototpe drivers you keep going on about

You have no idea what you are on about .. stop telling people crossfire doesn't work please .

I get 99-100% scaling in Planetside 2 and perfectly smooth framerate ..

The prototype drivers where mentioned in one of tomshardware's article on the 7990.
  14. BlackDove

How are you capturing the framerates? A bunch of them are probably drops/runs and the frametime variance probably looks like the graphs in the article.

    #!

There's a video since you won't read the articles.

Basically, you're paying double for less performance.

The prototype driver that fixes some of what's been wrong with Crossfire.

Who even uses a 7990

I dont know about 7 series cards , but my 6970's work perfectly in this game .
  16. XRIST0

    Msi afterburner ..

How am i paying double for less performance o_O

That prototype driver only apply's to the 7990 .
  17. BlackDove

WATCH THE VIDEO FFS. It explains why programs like that are essentially lying about the framerate vs what you actually get on the screen.

And it applies to any Crossfire setup. The 7990 is just two 7970 GPU's in Crossfire on a single card. It's just as broken as a dual 7970.

    And here's the proof:

Dude , no offence .. But you have absolutly no idea what you are on about ..

Im not watching a 20 minute video of some idiot with nothing better to do blabbing on about something that is totally irrelevant to this thread ( capturing frames )

I know what a 7990 is , and i really dont know what you are trying to prove by posting all these things got to do with the 7990

Crossfire works in this game and thats all there is to it , are you thick ?

Do you even own a Crossfire setup ? or do you just read the internet too much .

Some people just have absolutly NO idea what theyre doing with dual cards , and they shouldn't have them .
  19. BlackDove

Clearly you don't know what frametime variance is, microstutter, dropped frames, runt frames or any of that. It's TOTALLY RELEVANT to this thread. Crossfire not working is not specific to one game!

Continue ignoring the data, and the facts. It's not just Ryan Shrout of PC Perspective, but there are tons of people who've started doing real frame capture to analyze GPU performance. They've all realized that Crossfire doesn't work.

At least AMD has admitted there's a problem and is attempting to to fix it with the prototype driver.

I dont experience any of those in my game ? nor do any of those mean that "crossfire doesnt work"

If it means anything , i use flip que size 5 and alternate frame rendering mode in radeon pro .

My game is perfectly smooth until it turns cpu bound , not a stutter not a hiccup the majority of times ..

Crossfire works for me , SLI also works on my mates pc using a GTX 590 .. no problems at all to be honest
