That doesn't seem like an ideal mechanic, though. I mean, it's a cloak, not camo. We already can be nearly invisible in a dark place in the modern world, with no special technology to that end. A cloak is, or should be, made to be completely invisible when standing still.
Just logged out after another disappointing attempt to use stalker cloak. Ejection seat dropped into a busy fight. Was in a flanking position in some rocks and had a guy just come right up and gunned me down. I hadn't moved, fired a shot or literally done anything for over 3 minutes. As far as I'm concerned, its complete garbage with the state the infiltrator cloak is in.
Funny thing. This happened to me as well. I was cloaked and crouched near some rocks, hadn't moved an inch. All of a sudden this heavy starts running toward me. At first I just think he's trying to find cover or something (vanu disco parade was lighting the place up). Next thing I know he shoots me right in the face. So, I go about my business, respawn again, get into position, etc. Same thing happens a few minutes later, cloaked, crouched, not moving...LA swoops down outta nowhere and blows me away. At that point I could tell it was gonna be a bad day in planetside, and just decided to log off.
Proper way of using the new version of the cloak: Usage is best for midrange to long distance combat, as a mobile cover. Within 50m the good players will spot you instantly. Some rare beast players will be able to spot you at ranges as far away as 100m (personal record around 85m) , not deep cloak but they can see you before you enter deep cloak (takes around 1 second). If your fighting zergs then you should have a minimum of 30m safe distance. Obviously this new cloak is only good for scout rifles and snipers, so if you cant pull off headshot on a regular basis then this class is no longer for you. If your playstyle was CQC with SMGs then pretty much every other class will be a significant boost for you. Whenever I see a stalker trying to hide my eyes start to tear up, after which I comically tear him apart. The only way to stand a chance while hiding with stalker cloak is to sit in a bush or next to complex textures (not single colored walls). Its broken no doubt, but my midrange performance have become insane after this nerf.
Hu... I think you missed something... the new cloak disable your primary weapon slot. You cannot use scout rifle, sniper rifles or SMG, only pistols with it.
Cloak is for medium/long range invisibility. It shouldn't and should NEVER provide close range perfect invisibility. I primary Infiltrator. It would be extremely cheesy to have complete and perfect invisibility given the killing power even a stalker with only a sidearm has access to.
You still have to decloak, it still makes a loud noise, and you're still vulnerable to Darklight. What's the problem? I figure that's how a cloak should work: The casual observer won't find you, but if someone is looking for you, they will.
Define medium/long range because I'm consistently seen while cloaked at ranges of 40+m, even at nighttime conditions. Scoped in, I've seen cloaked infiltrators running around on the ground from the air pad level of towers. I've even been counter sniped while in deep cloak so its clearly not providing invisibility at the ranges it should.
In the last 2-3 weeks i made had some interesting encounters. Most of the time the people that are able to spot me from long distances are lvl1-10 without any directive points. It seems as if they were able to see me, as if i would do a personal lapdance for them while i am on deep cloak. One guy was able to see me in the tunnels of an amp-station. i was on deep cloak and he used the yellow stream. He left the stream landed in front of me and shot me in the face???? I mean: WTF??? And there are other events like that. I dont hide on top of capturepoints or on other suspicious places, but some people come up to me from 50m or more while i am crouched and absolutely static and shoot me down. Whats the meaning of the deep cloak, if you are visible to everyone without them using the dark light? The life of an infiltrator is dangerous enough: we have the lowest shields and while on stalkers cloak there is the big disadvantage of not being able to take a primary with you (and now try to kill a heavy with overshield, that comes up on you, while your only weapon is the Hunter QX). I can live with the fact that i look like a person made out of glas even while crouch-walking but please SOE, a deep cloaked stalker should not be visible like that. (Sorry for my english, but whoever finds a mistake is allowed to keep it).
I've been killed a couple of times by people when there was 0% chance of them seeing me by playing legit. IE: They were most likely using hacks. And before anyone chimes in with "they're not hacking" bs, I can tell the difference between someone someone using hacks and me just not hiding well enough or in a bad spot. Honestly, I've never hidden on top of a control point, but I wouldn't think it a good spot in the first place. What's on top of them? A big lit up holo display. What makes a cloak really stand out? Lights... Just seems derp to me. Some general tips I've learned: Avoid having any light sources be around you. If someone coming even remotely close to you has to view you between them and a source of light, it's a bad spot. Avoid having any solid colored or shaped objects behind you. Avoid stairs. The parallel straight lights being broken by your cloak is a dead giveaway. Avoid shadow edges. The edges on shadows can give you away. Look for places with complex patterns: Like trees. The bark on trees is great. Corners where people are more likely to go straight rather than turn immediately are good. I've seen people even using darklights walk right past me on a corner, then look around, completely missing me like it's a blind spot on a camera in MGS... Don't underestimate the deep cloak. As long as people aren't specifically looking for a Stalker and you're not around something that would give you away (like a light behind you or a solid wall or straight lines), most will walk right by you. Just don't be in their path. If they bump into you and you can't be mistaken for a rock or other obstacle, they may figure you out. My problem with the cloak is the audio. The damn cloak sound is way too loud and can be heard from too far away. Hell, you can hear a cloak from 100m away. The cloak should not have a decibel level of someone shouting... It should be more around a whisper or light conversation at best. 5m away, sure, let them hear a cloak noise. A guy on the other side of the base? No...
Sometimes i believe in spotting hacks too. if i sit in a field of grass in deep cloak and someone runns up on me from far away just to shoot me in the face without me giving him any hind where to look for me, i call that bull****. Thats true. Since i started the game I found so many infiltrators (especially with huntercloak) because i was following the sound of their cloakingdevice. Yesterday i found an infil on top of an ampstation and i started hearing him while i was on the groundlevel.
Here, I took a video of it. In this video: -Deep cloak. -Not moving. -Not in an obvious place. -The guy did not have a Darklight.
I almost never play infiltrator, and when I do it is long range sniping, so the cloak changes didn't affect me at all really. But I feel sorry for infiltrators now. i gun them down so easily. Was the system broken before the changes when cloakers were next to invisible for me even when running? Not in my opinion. At this point flashlight are almost pointless, you can see cloakers pretty well without. I like your suggetion, It makes sense.
what kind of bothers me is the fact, that there seems to be no difference between the visibility while running or while crouchwalking. In both cases you look like a person made out of glas (so really easy to see as long as there are not plenty of other people to distract the enemy from you).
The only problem I see with that comment is half the time you where out of sight, LA could do that to, but it would be on top of the roof, not out the window.
IMHO, he didn't see you, he just shot at the corner of the room (or the door) which happened to be behind you.
