Cities?

It would be pretty rad in the event we get a new continent that there is a massive city on it. all the fights taking place within industry areas is fine, but a large scale futuristic skyscraper colony area. It could be a whole lot more than just a bunch of skyscrapers, parks, residential, slums, downtown's, rivers, and could even add fluff like "the TR's Capital" or something I dunno. almost like a blade runner kinda feel?

 Hell maybe the whole Continent is a city.

The question In my mind would be, are all the buildings enter able? and if so how detailed, like every door or just some major hallways, lobby's, stair wells, and roof tops entry's?

Actually that would be an awesome idea, It would be cool to make the cities look like each faction, maybe make the contient with each faction's styled city be the continent that that faction has its sanctuary on (but have fighting in other parts of the city as well), then make the existing continents neutral (i've seen threads on the technical side of how the continents work, not sure though). You could do them sort of like the Back to Karkand maps in BF3 (if you've ever tried those), a city of buildings and such with natural terrain outside, but obviously you would put more buildings to really get that urban combat feel.

I don't think full-on cities would work (super tedious also) but something like BF3's Back to Karkand would be nice.

Tedious? yeah for the designers, most likely, but think about how radically different tactics would be in those areas? imagine the air fights in between the buildings and above, snipers getting dug in tank convoys rolling through the streets
I'm not holding my breath, but if It did happen it would be a nice area to occasionally duke it out in.
  5. Ileko

An urban jungle actually would put more pressure on tanks and such and more power to infantry which would be a good way to force actual teamwork between infantry and tanks, with some change from (mostly) open areas with small military installations.

I'd like to see them do a map on the space station orbiting the planet, maybe have it in a huge domed city on said space station... a while back someone had an interesting right up about how the lore explains that the drop pods are launched from this space station that was orbiting the planet from when we first got there... but apparently even tho all 3 factions are at war and fight over every single inch of land we all share the space station peacefully and allow each other to launch drop pods full of troopers at each other from it... doesn't really make sense to me as that space station would be one of the most strategically significant points to hold

Ive just started this game and first thing i woundered was were does all these suposed soldier live and wheres the factory workers live that make all the vehicles. If the developers made a entire continant of of a city would be awesome and if all buildings were accesible that would be amazing.

They have already discussed an urban continent due to the sheer volume of people who want it, and they agree. However, they said it'll take a lot of time due to all the objects that need created and what not...so the three other continents are coming out first. That doesn't, however, mean that they aren't working on the urban continent while doing so...or implementing urban areas amongst these three that they're currently working on.

I say they should go for it.

A city is the only place in the world that combines many types of terrain in a very small area.

You have your open parks, closed urban population centers, sky-scrapers, high-ways, hills, sometimes mountains, and even water-ways that you can find in cities all over the world.

And a single public restroom, also known as the Spawn...

Cities work well in another MMOFPS called WWII Online/Battleground Europe. In that game capturing the city of Antwerp requires the combined cooperation of armored, infantry, air and sea units, each role almost equal in importance. In an urban battle though infantry usually shined. Look at the Syrian conflict ATM a lot of FSA pop out from an alley and hit a Syrian BMP with an RPG and then disperse.

A lot of frustration for infantry players would be alleviated if given an urban area to fight in IMO.

    Because its the only way...

There's actually a lot that they could do with urban continent concept.

Imagine the entire continent consisting of a megacity that reflected the once unified people upon Auraxis. The majority of this desolate wasteland would be post apocalyptic as a reflection the ongoing war between the three factions...abandoned buildings overrun by flora through the years of neglect, massive craters caused by devastating bombardment, sinkholes that opened up due to these weapons shaking the very earth.

However, amongst this urban wasteland, you'd have the capitol cities of the three factions defended by powerful shield generators. Within these areas, you'd have NPCs going about their daily lives, capable of interacting with the players and delving into the lore. Tech labs could have actual technicians talking about upcoming technological advances for their respective factions. Bio laps could have biologists studying the native flora and pathogens amongst the world. Essentially, these capitols could be where you learn about the lore of the game, relax, and where new players establish how to go about playing through training exercises akin to the original game.

However, not even these capitol cities would be completely impenetrable...because Infiltrators and small groups could slip in undetected and temporarily disable the capitol's massive shield...leaving it open to full scale assault. Though, as expressed, these shields would go down temporarily and have an automated repair system that ensured that, after a specific duration of time, they would go back up...not to mention the cities plethora of automated defenses.

I really like the idea of one huge megacity that reflects the three factions split through three "thriving" pieces and a huge spans of desolation caused through conflict.

I wanted to suggest this aswell.

But I had a different approach.... instead of a colony/city of one of the factions why not have a continent on which is said futuristic city but one that was abandoned and used to belong to a long lost alien race?

You would still get the skyscrapers and huge city feel but you can also have the feel of something spooky mysterious added...not to mention nature slowly trying to crawl its way back in...

Imagine a small aircraft or ground vehicle moving through the tight streets of a ghost city...AND BOOM there goes the rocket...

But in the end I support any big supercity scenario.

    ALSO: UNDERGROUND FIGHTS

None of the current areas have anything beneath ground level...those ancient cities could have. Pitch black underground areas where nightvision/flashlights/high contrast and infanty are the only way to go.

they have been wanting cities since i played the first planet side. they would be cool, but they will always be imaginary...
  16. Tenebrae Aeterna

I'd rather the human city above...and the alien city below.

Combine both your concepts into my own, and have it that the humans built their megacity atop an already existing megacity of the Vanu underground. Perhaps there were a few Vanu structures topside that they decided to make their massive colony around...but when the blasts began, that opened up the underground...which lead to the fact that the Vanu were subterranean.

All the other continents should have underground areas as well, in my opinion, but more natural types of terrains...such as crystal caves, regular caves, infernal type caverns, ice caves, etc.

that is best idea,I would play this kind of map most, but I think nobody from devs will read this and such map would never exist
  18. Vashyo

They've seen this same thread idea pop up dozens of times, reason it's not high on the priority list is cause it's not very easy to make, is time consuming to make and it could have bad effect on FPS if not done right and even then people would complain if it didn't feel right.

There is a city in the lore on Cyssor apparently, maybe someday once they've invented a good way to create it, they re-create Cyssor.

If SOE decides on this, I hope they either go all out or not do it at all. In other words, if there are 50 buildings in the small city/town, but only 4 or 5 can be entered - that's lame wasted space and there's no point. There also needs to be meaning to the city - is it an industrial town where pieces of it offer mechanized resources? Are there different parts of the city? Owning the airfield grants aerospace resources, industrial factories mechanized, military training centers infantry resources? The possibilties stretch on a long ways - they should really nab this potential and do something great, or not even attempt.

What my vision of a Planetside 2 cityscape is a zone where all the territories are intercapturable within the continent - possibly many cities, or as suggested above by someone else: an entire continent is a future cityscape.

It'd be like the city is its own hex-based grid, with things like the airport, skyscrapes, control towers, clubs - all are capturable territories and give you a reason to "move" through the city with fluidity - they aren't just spaces to look pretty and appeal to aesthetic critics. From what I said earlier, the city could provide different structures for different resources.

    Many possibilities.

But I'm sure there are tons of things they have going on already. This discussion should continue though, some bright ideas come from the players ;)

There is just so much they could do with an urban landscape...but as they said, it's going to take a lot of time. That's a lot of objects to incorporate...lots of details, lots of planning.
