The latest 500mb update seemed to have updated the textures of vehicles so that the ES parts are now darker and duller. It makes the NC lightning look less awful but not as good as old one. Yellow is better, it's more neutral. Left is old texture. Middle is current. Right is PTS. Can we please remove the blue color on the sides like on the old? Upper is current textures. Lower is PTS.
The old lightning looked so much better still, but it's a start. I hate those bright blue colours. They ruin the camos
Hopefully they'll put the same pallet onto infantry, looks a bit odd with my bright blue/yellow NC guy on a Navy blue/Dark yellow flash.
thank god, YES! a step in the right direction even though it's still not on the level of the old lightning which had little to no teamcolors. because they just ruin the vehicle and overall camo coverage. seriously, no army in the world would go "hey, lets slap large red/yellow/purple spots onto our vehicles to improve friend-foe identification on the battlefield! because SCREW CONCEALMENT RIGHT?!"
I dont understand why they are making the vehicles all ugly and grey. In the first image (NC lightnings) I like the bottom left lightning the most. What if I want to just be Vanu and not a camo? I dont want to be dull grey I want to be default faction specific Vanu purple and teal. I often like to take off my camo on my Heavy Assault so I can be a cool OG Vanu soldier and not look like a storm troop or a palm tree. Let default (no camo equipped) be like the bottom left lightning and when you apply camo let it look like the current PTS camo coverage.
Why SOE is recoloring the vehicles to a different shade instead of rolling back to these is beyond me. That and the old NC lightning look great.
Long story short, optimization. Having one neutral texture which gets faction coloured in-engine is more efficient than having three separate textures. Looks like Bill is pulling his weight. Hopefully they apply this to faction coloured camo as well. EDIT: Oh it also paves the way for vehicle hacking as well.
looks like a really good balance to me! (current nc look too much like toys). waiting for them. thanks for the comparison man.
I feel it's worth noting that we wouldn't need this 'optimization' to free up texture memory if the game didn't also have to load a hundred different camos at once at every fight. It's also worth mentioning that PS1 had vehicle hacking, and it also had entirely different paintjobs- not just recolors- for every vehicle, including empire-specific ones that would only very rarely even use the alternate color schemes. But hey, PS1 also didn't have vehicle empire decals that cost $3 a piece, so there's that, too.
Yeah I'm not really sure how but apparently camos don't make a huge difference on performance. Doesn't make sense to me but whatever. At least camos keep the game alive. It's also worth noting that comparing PS1 and PS2 on this matter is pretty pointless, since they're two completely different games on completely different engines using completely different tech and have completely different system requirements. Anyways, Bill's response on doing the same thing to camo: https://twitter.com/PS2BillYeatts/status/531844417414369280 So it looks like not only is faction camo getting the same treatment, but infantry textures getting revamped as well? Maybe? At least that's what I'm getting from this. EDIT: Yep, infantry base textures are getting reworked as well. https://twitter.com/PS2BillYeatts/status/531641588330418176
