[Suggestion] Change The Way Guns Are Held In First Person

I think that the way guns are held in Planetside 2 should be changed. In a recent patch the burst weapons were updated and there is now a glitch were you hold the weapon lower than default.

Here are examples of the default and the lower version:[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

In my opinion it looks more natural and feels more natural when hip-firing because the weapon is lowed towards the hip. The way guns are held right now take up too much space on the screen and looks a little strange because the weapon is held up at eye level at all times instead of just when aiming down the sights, or scope. I think this little cosmetic change would make the first person view look better overall.

Please thumb up if you like this idea or make a comment on why you think this is a bad idea.

I'm wondering though if in 3d person the infantry models actually "fire from the hip"?

It seems to me that when someone is hipfiring they actually shoot from about the middle of their torso.

Of course on the other hand in 3d person the weapon is not even pointing forward a lot of times while in 1st person you can see your own gun pointing forward, so 3d and 1st person aren't exactly in sync. :p

Yeah, I don't think "hip firing" is meant to be taken literally. I can't imagine anyone holding the weapon down at the hip like that. Maybe shotguns are an exception though, I distinctly remember being taught to hip fire a shotgun at boot camp.

In the original usage as taught by the US military, it's actually used in certain situations for LMG gunners. It looks even sillier than what you might imagine:

Malaysia once tried to invent an assault rifle which could be fired "from the hip" and ADSing at the same time!

After the Berapi L06 they're not allowed to make assault rifles anymore. :p

It's an intentional change. They're rolling that out across a lot of guns.

Hip firing. God I hate the term. Guns in video game and in real life aren't fired from the hip. They are fired from the shoulder. Keep it realistic with the weapon shouldered, literally firing from the hip is by no means natural. The way the are normally are completely fine and more realistic.

This is not a glitch. On PTS, they lowered the view of all weapons. I don't think they intended to roll out the changes for burst weapons this patch, but they are coming eventually for all weapons.

Speaking of 1st person models, what if they were scaled down to their real size?

Yeah hip firing is a bad term.

The way weapons are fired in PS2 (and other FPS's) when not aiming down the sights is actually under the shoulder. Basically the weapon stock is either kept under the shoulder under the armpit or pressed against the bicep.

ADS is when its brought up to eye level and pressed against the shoulder. Ironically, your field of view doesn't need to be impaired unless you close an eye and look down the sights. You can fire from this position without using the sights and simply keep your weapon aimed where you are looking. Sometimes using a redot sight to 'aid' in getting the weapon pointed where you want it.

Surprisingly its not as inaccurate as it sounds when doing that. Not going to hit anything past 50m, but within 5-20m, you can hit a man sized target by just looking at them.

But game does not equal reality.

Was still in my training manual when I went in. But even as good as our TM's are. That isn't exactly how it goes. As a SAW gunner I would never have bothered to hold the 249 like that unless I was at a full tilt run and firing at the same time.

The two modes I most commonly would use is from the bipod (in a stationary position), or bringing it up to my shoulder like a M16 or M4.

I'm guessing if you're about a buck fifty in weight, you might have to let it hang down like that. But if you're that small.. who in their bright mind made you a machine gunner? Better yet, don't answer that.. same type of people who assign those over 6'2" to 93's instead of 85's.

    Armpit fire. PS2?

ADS/shoulder fire. Head leaning to side (what if that was added?).

actually when I'm very tired, i'm firing from the hip:)
  12. Commando235

The first one is incorrect and should stay out of any FPS. Just my opinion...
The second is pretty close to what games should mimic, firing without looking down the sights sometimes called point shooting.
The last is probably looking down the sights. Even CSGO maintains this realistic firing even though you can't even ADS!
Keep the non ADS the way it was!

Thanks for the info guys. I should not of used the term "hip-fire" as it is not really accurate to call it that. It still looks more natural though because the gun would be eye level at all times usually. Also thanks for letting me know that it is an intentional change.

Hey, on the subject of holding weapons, didn't TR used to hold some weapons at port arms (muzzle pointing up at angle instead of down) while moving ? Obviously that didn't reflect in first person, I'm pretty sure CARV used to be one of those weapons. What happened to that animation?

Or am I going crazy? Anyone else remember this?

Here's one old image I found googling(I think it was first 6 months or so after release and then animation was gone). Notice how their weapons are pointing upwards, those holding animations are completely gone today it seems.

The models on PTS that got "lowered" look ridiculously stupid. Specifically the Carv.
    No thanks.
  16. Commando235

The weapon was being held on the shoulder. Eye level would be if we were looking down the sights. That's why we could see the part of the top of it. And this is natural for the way most people hold weapons.
