Maybe this is a stupid question, but why aren't any of these ever sprinkled around the big bases? ;x I only see AV and AA turrets on the walls. These AI turrets are quite rare and you sometimes only see them at those tiny bases where they sit on the ground rather than a wall. They're the ones with the dual chain gun things? One barrel either side of the seat. I've never actually used one, but they sound neat. If no one likes them please could I add them to my Prowler turret?
I thought that is something like Tunguska AA but then I noticed that it has horrible angles and relatively low ROF (compared with tunguska of course). Never had chance to kill anyone with it due rarity and bad placement. People saying that M12 Kobalt is very good weapon and it's cheap so why you need something else? This phalanx turret can't damage armored targets too.
Agreed, i've always wondered why wouldn't they use more of those turret, they are effective and can mow down infantry easily while being completely worthless against anything else. But they need the ability to shoot up 70° and have their damage vs ESFs increased, so that they can be used in small bases as a weaker AA turret that can provide some cover against hovering fighters while not being as powerful as a regular AA turret.
There are a few of those double-minigun turrets scattered along the walls of some bigger facilities...most of them face inward though, into the compound, except for a few gates that have a pair on the flanking towers facing outward. The inward-facing ones aren't much use for defense because if you've got bad guys in the compound, you've also got LAs on the walls that will C4 the turret or infiltrators that will hack it. And oddly I don't think I've ever seen attackers hack and use those AI turrets either. Too vulnerable, I guess. I think I've killed a couple people with them. They aren't hugely useful because they get taken down so fast. They can damage ESFs like small arms fire can (at least, they should) but they don't have the vertical traverse to be used for that very much.
Anti-vehicle turrets fire HEAT shells apparently, they do have quite a punch vs infantry as well. Given their high RoF, the anti-infantry guns are redundant when the bigger turrets are present. As for the tank weapon for anti-infantry duties, the Kobalt is the weapon to take.
Some amp stations have a couple, indar excavation has one, and one on one of the high bases in indar. They are rare and indeed sound great but ive not yet actually killed anyone with one
The AI turrets are horrible. They don't do damage to aircraft and require quite a few shots to kill at even reasonable ranges. You'd be better off deploying an engy turret than these.
Agreed, the AI turrets are really a 'waste' unless you know it is going to be in a spot dealing with mostly infantry. However at the gates where vehicles are, the AV guns are a bit more effective. The problem is, most of the bases are not laid out to really make AI turrets really 'worthwhile'
I use them at the impact site. I think there are three there, two in the tower and one on the ground. They are alright but they have a large cof. Can cause a lot of havoc with an infiltrator though. Two of those turrets are a few meters away pointed right at the spawn room. The other faces the bridge I believe.
