Almost Came Back, Then Saw FPS

I've enjoyed playing PS2 in the past. History: I played PS1 for years, started with PS2 from the Beta, played PS2 for about a year. I took a break from PS2 to go back and play EQ2 again after getting the free level 85 character. This was after a long break from EQ2. I only have enough free time to play one game at a time it seems.

So I log into PS2 again, note that some armor and abilities have been reset with a refund of the cert points. I'm not bothered by the reduced cost of nano. I take advantage of the freed cert points to upgrade the flak instead. I'm put out, but not at all surprised, by the nerf to the Vanu Max Overdrive. Enough people complained about it to get it turned into a glorified charge. Great [not]. I idly wonder if they did anything for the poor TR Max. I see some people are still whining on the forums about KD ratio, but hey, that is a good thing because it almost disproves the notion that the game is being ruined by Sony listening to the whiners.

I go to take my character out for a spin and notice that its pretty laggy. I check the FPS. 10. Great [not]. I was getting about 25 FPS before, playing on a RoG laptop. I try lowering the graphics settings. Makes everything ugly, but doesn't help the frame rate. I try another server. Same thing.

In the time I've been away, with the PS2 devs supposedly focusing on improving the performance, this is the result? Say what?

I like the game, in spite of all the really annoying and never-ending nerfs, but I can't play at 10 FPS. So maybe in a couple of years, when my laptop dies, I'll get a faster gaming laptop and try again? You know, some time when Windows 8 is as dead as Vista, people have a load of dusty tablets laying around because they've finally figured out they need some actual power and useful software, the price on those too-expensive Intel-inside Mac Air wannabe Ultrabooks has come down to near netbook range, and there has been a restart of innovation in laptop performance?

Or maybe someone could give me a hint as to what has changed to cause this turn for the worse in FPS?

Maybe you should focus on a gaming desktop. It's considerably cheaper and upgradable.

I can't answer your question about the FPS, my rig never dips below 30 on max settings. Not sure why it would get worse though, they have been optimizing it. Maybe you should make sure you don't have any unwanted programs running the background, and try out gamebooster.

Dunno what to say my fps went up after the improvements. What's your specs?

OP must have an even crappier computer than me. ...and mine's 5 years old and it only cost $300 to build then

Meanwhile I'm getting a stable 50fps in most fights and 30FPS in biolabs. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they finally started culling models behind solid geometry b/c nothing else would explain me going from 10FPS last summer in Biolabs, to 30 now.

Try deleting your useroption.ini let the loader create a new one and reset your video options

Its an E-Sport that requires top of the line gaming computers and an elitist KDR attitude. This game isn't for you. They tricked you into thinking it was a PS1 sequel.

    Solution:
Continue your PS2 vacation until continent locking comes out and they fix the FPS issues with their recent updates. OMFG came out, game ran smoother. Next few updates ruined all of that and we were back to square one with performance issues.

Going by your name, it sounds like you just couldn't slam with the best :smugdog:

Counterpoint: it's a game where you can cover a friend with C4 and send them in to hug friends or enemies alike, can have simultaneous competitions to turbo a vehicle over Broken Arch and to crash an ESF into the turboing vehicles, there is no MLG presence, KDR is widely regarded as meaningless, SPM is treated with deep suspicion, and there's enough reasons to explain things away that it turns out NOBODY is good at this game.

It's a game that so big, that it's whatever it is you decide to make it.

I get 55 minimum, MINIMUM, and that's during a big biolab fight. I have a pretty good rig though, but I haven't seen even the worst rigs dip below 25 like, ever. If you're consistently getting lower than that, you should probably troubleshoot because it sounds like something's screwy OR you're playing on a 10 year old laptop with integrated graphics.

FFS!! Seriously - why the hell do people think a "Laptop" is a freaking PC gaming device?
OK - SOME high VERY high end laptops can - but in general... NO, NEVER AND NEVER WILL carry the power of a decent PC.

Really gets my goat up when people are crying about the games performance - then you read they are on a laptop and even a big double face palm doesn't even come close!

The game is fine - from Australia I get 60+ FPS on Connery in the US no problems at all.

    No I don't have a monster rig

    amd 6 core
    GTX660 Ti (Budget card)
    8gigs of ram

Laptops are good for one thing.... frisbee !!!

Tablets and docking stations replaced laptops long IMO.

Since you're using a laptop, go into your video card manager and make sure have it set to forcibly use your real video card on the game, not auto or the integrated card, as the auto mode will often switch it to using the inferior integrated card (it's a common powersaving feature).

For the record, I also use a laptop to play--it's a Dell Performance model from 2011, and I generally get between 30-50 FPS, so it sounds more like a 'you' problem than a game problem. The last couple updates have decreased performance a bit since PU02, but it shouldn't be that bad.

laptops are still better then tablet docking station combos when you want to do some real work. for games though they are usually utter garbage and run sub par mobile GPUs and processors unless you pay an arm and a leg for a gaming model with horrid battery life. even then the thing is going to be a ball toaster.

    I have:

    Phenom II X6 1045t
    R7 260x
    4 GB RAM

I'm lucky to get 25 fps in even medium sized fights. The low amount of RAM is probably part of if but considering this is a 32bit game it's unlikely to be significant.

According to the straw poll I made most peoples performance has gotten worse from the updates since PU01.

4gb RAM is not even close to being sufficient. Just because it is a 32bit game does not mean your system will not use more than 4gb. 8gb should be considered bare minimum for Planetside 2. Since buying extra RAM is dirt cheap these days there's very little reason to not to get more.
  13. whitupiggu

I was getting 30-40 fps in large fights just after PU01. I really don't need advice from an amateur PC builder.
  14. Hatesphere

PS2 uses an LAA flag that allows it to use up to 4 gigs of ram while running on a 64 bit system, so yes, only having 4 gigs total is an issues. take the plunge and grab an 8 gig kit when it goes on sale for $50 you will love yourself, not just for planetside, but for the effect it will have on your entire rig.
  15. Kaindestroi

Don't buy a laptop ever again if its for gaming, seriously!

no need to be a dick, if you dont want to upgrade to the standard of the time thats your issue.
  17. whitupiggu

Already planning on buying RAM when I have the money to upgrade. That doesn't address the fact performance has gotten significantly worse for me.
  18. Hatesphere

I'm just calling you out on being a dick, not on the issues with performance.
