I have a 64 bit operating system. Windows 8.1. How can I be sure I have downloaded the 64 bit client version? Does the DL file manager detect and select the appropriate client version ?
Not sure if this applies to the steam version but... 2 ways I can do it. 1) After hitting play, you'll see the window open up as if the game were opening in Windowed mode. Top Left header should have the game version with x86 or x64 there. It only lasts a second or two before the game starts as normal in full-screen mode. 2) After starting up the game, goto your taskmanager (usually ctr-alt-del). Find the planetside process under processes tab. It should have an (x86) or (x64) at the end. just in case people are unaware. x86 = 32bit version. x64 = 64bit version. There's a chance that your client didn't use the 64 bit version. But you should have it downloaded in your planetside folder. Not 100% sure how to switch it to permanently use the 64 bit client if it's defaulting to the 32bit. I only know the temporary fix which needs to be done every time you start the game.
Both versions of the client are downloaded for by default. You don't choose. The launcher will automatically select the correct executable file, 32bit or 64 bit without any need for input from user. If however you suspect an error and would like to check the version running then place the game into windowed mode and check in the top left for either x86 (32Bit) or x64(64bit). You can choose to force 32Bit PS2 cleint on a 64Bit OS if you wish to, people to chose to do this for various reasons including wanting to use overlays such as Steam which for me will not work at all with 64Bit client. If you want to do this then just ask and somebody will tell you, takes seconds to do, wont get you in any trouble and is pretty much fool proof.
I have a 64 bit machine. I downloaded the 32 bit client version.. I would prefer the 64 bit version.. I will delete the 32 bit version.......IF.......I know I am downloading the 64 bit version. IS THERE A LINK TO THAT VERSION ?
Find the 64bit executable. Should be in the same folder with the 32bit one. Open the launcher. Once it's open and does its filecheck/update thing, rename the 64bit to look like the 32bit and delete the 32bit. That only works once and you'll have o do it every time you open the launcher. If you open the launcher again, it will put things back the way they were. There is a way to force it more permanently, but I haven't used it and therefore don't know how.
Nope. You didnt. You downloaded both 32Bit and 64Bit. Your answer is right there in post#3. Please read it beacause thats exactly how it is. Your mentioned how to force 64Bit Client, like Hosp above me said, its a case of delete one file and rename another but i highly doubt you would need to do this if you are in fact running a 64Bit OS. How do you know that the 32Bit version is running by default on your 64Bit OS? Did you put the game into windowed mode and check the exe description in the top left?
I opened the game...ran task manager and it said 32 bit client was running. That seemed pretty clear. WHY SHOULD THIS BE SO DIFFICULT TO RUN THE 64 BIT CLIENT ?
This is the only game where I have to load the game....pull up the game files and delete the 32 bit version to force 64 bit client.....every time I boot-up the game.
I would not be surprised if the Steam version does not include the 64bit client. Also for most things in Windows 7 (maybe Vista also) alt+ctrl+del will get you to the task manager, but it is normally easier to press shift+ctrl+esc to directly open the task manager.
Normally the patcher updates all game files, including 64 bit and 32 bit executables. I might be wrong, but I think (almost) any other files are meant to run with both executables and do not need different versions.
I have used the repair function.Something is broken in SOE's software when it comes to detecting 32 vs 64 bit OS. repair function does not fix the version selection.
Like this man explained, Launcher automatically detects the version of windows, if you delete 32 bit client it will be downloaded again automatically via update.
