It wasn't an enemy warpgate he crashed into. I know because I also had this exact same thing happen to me a few days ago. Coincidentally enough, it was also on Esamir. I tried flying my Scythe into my own warpgate to re-arm and repair and instead I crashed against the warpgate bubble and blew up on impact. On the respawn screen, I confirmed that my death location was right at the VS warpgate. Plus, you always get the "Out of Bounds" warning well before even touching the bubble itself if it's an enemy WG. I don't know what caused it, and it never happened again so far, but it does indeed happen.
Happend twice to me. Its like a hit in your face, you escape with low health, and crash on your own base...
Esamir seems to be a death trap anyways. The TR Warpgate Jumppads catapult you into hillsides that kill you.
