This is a new behavior since last patch. The Light Assault gets in a state where it has backwards thrust. it behaves as if the player is pressing space to jump+Jet and S to go backwards. If trying to jet up and forward, the player simply goes up. if trying to jet up, the player goes up and back. Restarting client relieves symptoms for some time.
