[Whining Thread] Flight = Garbage

I think after a week I learned how to aim at the ground without flying into it or a tree.
  2. applepienation

So, flying is hard. Yeah. We know.

So do you try to help?

Nope. Just gonna contribute to the problem.
  3. NinjaTurtle

Even after 30 hours in the Reaver I still suck balls, it's almost as if nature never wanted turtles to fly.....

    DAMN YOU EVOLUTION

now that is pretty much my reaction and also why i have maxed out my skyguard....
  5. Pikachu

I still crash into buildings when I try shooting things with nose gun or I misjudge the distance to the rocks around me when circling a target. Enemies kill me without effort. I just managed to jump out of my plane when being chased and land without dying then the enemy pilot comes lands next to me, jumps out and shoots me with his gun. BR ~95 as usual.

One day, his skyguard gonna blown off by a squad of ESFs, at that moment, not just planetside 2, he won't be able to play any game, at all.

I wish the developers understood that by keeping flight in its current state, with such high skill-level attainment a requisite for participation, they are encouraging gross gameplay imbalance, here's why.

In order to become competitive with an ESF, or a Liberator for that matter, takes a lot of seat-time. It isn't an exaggeration to say 10 or more hours a day, to learn and master the cumbersome, non-intuitive WASD and mouse control scheme and unrealistic flight physics (yes flight physics, it is no small wonder that the majority of pilots choose to pull the nose of their aircraft up while making hard banking maneuvers, as they are either accessing this information through unseen informational fields from real-life pilot experiences and/or have spent some time with flight simulations in other video games).

Unless any aspiring participant is willing to invest a like amount of time in the air they will not be competitive. To me this game is far to interesting to spend all of my time solely behind the joystick of an ESF or liberator. Only those few, eccentric players who abandon the rest of what the game offers to specialize as a pilot are competitive. One of the consequences of this is the deprivation of an interesting gameplay dynamic to the rest of the player-base that has decided to forgo specialization. The other is that pilots of a very high skill-level can afford their faction a certain amount of undue effectiveness, depending on the balance of high skill-level pilots across factions on any given continent, during any given alert, around any given combat hot-spot.

It is in the interest of SOE and the PS2 community to remove the high skill ceiling for this activity. One way this can be easily accomplished is the implementation of Microsoft Controller (xbox 360) compatibility with a control schema somewhat similar to that of say Halo.

That is an excellent analogy actually. Would Halo still afford the excellent, renowned gameplay if the control schema of all of the aircraft (and land-craft for that matter) were WASD+mouse? No it would suck BIG TIME. And you would also have a same extreme minority of the player-base deciding to commit umpteen hours a day to specialize as operators, to the detriment of the rest of the community.

If everyone could jump in an aircraft, that due to its much easier accessibility afforded by its control schema, and deprive "specialists" air dominance, the game would be much more balanced, and offer what is a vital component of PS2 gameplay to EVERYONE, not the select FEW "elite" who have decided to forgo assisting their faction as medics, engineers, maxes etc. to specialize solely for the purpose of ego gratification.

Another blatantly obvious consequence of aerospace elitism is the recent ESF nerf it has received. It received this nerf solely because of the high performance exhibited by the select few. Restoring say, former rocket-pod lethality, much less ESF durability, will in all likelihood never happen as these "balance" changes were specifically directed at the ESF elite. Unfortunately, along with the original poster of this thread, untold numbers of players are discovering how difficult it is to fly and how skewed the risk/reward ratio is for the activity, and are asking for a restoration of durability and weapon effectiveness. SOE cannot restore this former effectiveness because, again, their emasculation was directed solely at the elite crowd.

The aerospace elitism ethic, seemingly condoned and encouraged by SOE, needs to go and the best way to accomplish this is for the development team to sit down, and with great haste, attempt to adopt a similar control schema, complete with full microsoft controller support, of the Halo vehicle control system. This would drastically lower the skill-level ceiling, making this integral, important gameplay accessible to the entire community, both newcomer and veteran. We could then have a serious debate about the restoration of ESF effectiveness and durability once the "elite" crowd is neutralized.

This seems to happen in every game out there. In Natural Selection 2 for example you have Lerk players who will always and only be Lerks, damn to hell if there is no Gorge on the team needed to heal other team-mates, especially a lonely Onos, solely to develop and maintain the high-skill/high reward level the Lerk entails (whose flight mechanic also just so happens to be WASD+mouse) for no other reason that I can think of but ego gratification.

Uhm, I used Joy2Key to map out a 360 gamepad for flying.....

it works.... but M/K will still tear you up due to accuracy of mouse aim.

In battlefield, due to different flight mechanics, the gamepad works wonders... in PS2? hehe, I can fly just fine, but hitting another ESF using the gamepad? Impossibru

So I "mastered" the M/K controls. I still lose to all those darned BR80+ dedicated pilots though.

Join the club bub, there are too many fliers, and too many tanks. And lord knows how much we love to be shot at random immediately once we exit the spawn, no matter how skillfully our exit was preformed.

    Land? Who lands :)

Can we get a [Whining] thread tag for these forums? It'd seriously save some time...

No, it's not about "what's fair", it's about what is fun. I delight in everything about infantry combat. Unleashing utter destruction with MAXs, headshotting enemies with my LMG and blowing up tanks with my rocket launcher, even the simplicity of bringing ammo up to the front as an engineer is fun as hell! And with my Prowler, I can score 5 or 6 enemy tank kills per life of I'm careful. In aircraft, it takes an obnoxious amount of effort to kill even the simplest of enemies, evasion is disorienting as hell, and my lifespan is measured in minutes anytime something so much as glances in my direction.

Flight needs to become significantly easier and more rewarding, like tank and infantry combat is. Until then, I revisit my earlier point...

    Flight, go **** yourself.
  13. HydroBIG BANG

I think you need to try out DCS A10c
  14. Kapernum

Try out Tropico 4. I think you'll like it.
  15. Akaan

True, because if there's one thing Sony Online Entertainment should do, it's making the game compatible with an xbox controller
  16. Pondera

    What?????
  17. DirArtillerySupport

You described exactly what I did but for different reasons (mouse yaw)...maxed out anchor the day it came out and never looked back. I HATE everything in the air....flak is FUN.
  18. Alarox

I only have two problems with flying.

1.) I tend to pull sideways reverse maneuvers too close to the ground and end up just barely clipping my wing against something.
2.) Not as good as I could be at aiming yet.

Everything else isn't too hard. Flying is actually a lot of fun. This coming from someone who has 925 hours played and only 13% of that in the air.
  19. Epic High Five

    Haha, yesssss

I have so many loadouts dedicated solely to ******** all over aloof skygods. Clearing the skies by any means necessary is my first priority in every battle I participate in.
  20. PastalavistaBB

Well, it'll be a PS4 controller then. Sooner or later every aspect of this game will be simplicized/dumbed down to be catered to the console crowd. The only reason that a PC version of Planetside 2 exists, is to test it. In fact, we are still playing the Beta. the real game will start with the launch of the Playstation 4 version.
