Would you be more motivated to play PS2 if it had a meta game?

I just fail to imagine a "meta game" for ps2 other than actually following the /Orders that no one seems to care about.
"Player generated missions" seem to be interesting , but I doubt they're spammy ,maybe an hour cooldown for every mission or so.
  2. Cromell

Oh, obviously you're right, I follow the objectives because that's what help the team, but I just wanted to point out that the gameplay is completely created by players. We don't really need "metagame" being provided by devs, we need players to be creative and reach out to make that metagame themselves.

It's like with aerial combat. People complain that dogfighting is hover spam/reverse spam, but it's the players that make it so - if we wanted we could dance in the skies for the sake of challenge itself, but many choose to just go the easy, boring way and then complain about variety.

Asking a question that's been answered a hundred times over already. It's like when I was a kid and sitting in class, and the teacher would explain a project to the class and as soon as she was done, one kid in the back would raise his hand and say "what are we doing?"
  4. Obscura

Lol you seem to not be understand that this is the "Planetside 2 Gameplay Discussion" where you discuss things with other players. If you had a bit of reading comprehension, you would see that I'm asking the community what THEY think. And besides, why would you keep a thread you think is pointless on the front page with your butt hurt comments? Sounds like you're just naturally a condescending douch who berates people because he can.
  5. Rockit

Something like campaigns from WW2OL (and maybe others) would be nice but cont locking from PS1 and coming to PS2 will help.
  6. Zotamedu

Step one, it's not an MMORPG so why on earth would it be like one? It's an FPS and not a RPG so there are no endless grinding quests given out by NPCs.

So what's the point with COD? Where's the meta in Tetris? You play to have fun for a little while and I think this game is good for that since you can easily drop in and out when you want. In a MOBA, you are stuck for the entire game or you will be punished. Here you can drop in and out as you please.

The meta game and the possibilities for a meta has always been there. I guess people just refuse to see it if it's not an in game tutorial about it and they get a constant stream of medals and XP thrown at them as they move to the prerpogramed goal. Make your own challenges. Find your own reason to play.

Oh, is THAT what you were doing? Because the problem here is that I have more than "a bit" of reading comprehension. And anyone with above a sixth grade reading level can infer that this is a thinly veiled "I'm bored / Where's the Meta?" thread that we've all seen dozens of times on this forum. The condescension comes directly from the fact that you aren't bringing anything new to the table. I posted a short quip for your original post because it really didn't merit a full response. But, "this is a discussion forum", so you want it? You got it. Let's start with the thread title:

Well, duh. Who wouldn't? Actually, scratch that. There IS a valid "No" answer to that in that the REAL meta already exists, but the vast majority of players, including you apparently, don't actually play it.

The long term goal is tactical dominance. It's training with your outfit to fight against enemy outfits with ever evolving tactics and strategies. If you think a global lattice system with continent and globe locking will sustain your craving for "deeper meta", you are going to be disappointed. Planetside 1 HAD that, but that's not what kept the dedicated players playing all of those years. It was the constant back and forth, *** for tat, and one-upmanship between the outfits that kept them playing.

Someone has said that about every single MMO I've ever played. Especially sandbox games. And I'll tell you what I've told everyone else: The game is what you make of it. All the devs do is give you a set of tools - it's up to you to build something. If you can not self-direct your play, then sandbox games are not your cup of tea. You should stick to linear shooters that drag you from one set-piece to another so you can ooooh and aaaah at them for a few minutes and then move right along.

If you're "farming kills", you're doing it wrong. If you're grinding XP and Certs, you're doing it wrong. I still enjoy logging in and playing just as much as I did in beta. Why? Because I'm in no rush. I'd much rather work on team tactics that crush the enemy quickly and capture the base than farm kills.

Welcome to life kid. The shine wears off of everything eventually.

You know what? Don't do us any favors. There's no need to bless us with your esteemed presence.

Sure, LOTS of people feel exactly the same way you do. Does that mean the devs should do anything different than anything they are already doing? Absolutely not. The hard blunt reality of this game (or ANY game for that matter) is that the vast majority of people who try it will not play it for more than a month or so. Even fewer will stick with it past 6 months. And an even tinier fraction will play it a year and beyond. Just like Planetside 1, there will remain a very tiny core group of players that make this their "one game". That's the facts of life.

All this is plainly evident to me, and I feel that it should be common sense to anyone who takes time to read and post in these forums. THAT is the source of my condescension. The repeated reposting of topics that have been cover ad nauseam is the source of my contempt.

So let me make it VERY clear to anyone reading this post; you have a very simple choice:

You can take this game AS IS and enjoy it OR you can go find another game that you WILL enjoy.

Because if you can't enjoy the game right now, then NOTHING the devs will ever do will change that and you'll only get more and more frustrated. You should cut your losses and go.
  8. BlackDove

I thought the metagame was switching to the winning faction to get XP?
  9. Obscura

What sort of high authority do you think you possess to say that gauging other opinions is bringing nothing new to the table?

Yes, actually, and it's far from a "thinly veiled I'm bored / Where's the Meta thread". Do you see me making demands? Downplaying SOE's efforts? No, I simply asked other players their opinions out of personal curiosity with no goal to get some definitive answer on the situation of the meta game. How is that bringing nothing new to the table? And what gives you the authority to come in and place yourself above everyone else by saying that our opinions don't matter? You could have easily remained civil, but instead chose to use an anecdote likening me to a child who doesn't listen and berate me based on.. what exactly? You don't agree/like what I'm saying?

As I clearly said, the main appeal of PS2 for my since the beginning is organized play with my outfit and practicing new tactics that change the course of the fight. But STILL, many of us(including PS1 VETS) would like to see those efforts count for something in the long run.

See above. It's the reason I still play, to improve as an outfit and apply different tactics to different situations. My outfit(Sentinels) dates back to PS1, my outfit leader even wrote an extensively detailed squad primer that was featured on SOE's wbesite. We have multiple PS1 vets, and it's their general opinion that they'd be inclined to log in if our actions contributed to some sort of goal as a faction.

Yes you're right, they have. But even sandbox games/mods like DayZ and Arma:Wasteland give players some goals to work towards, SOE is moving in the right direction with alerts and the upcoming player missions in terms of that. Lol and please, I come from games like Project Reality, Dayz, and Arma, before I ever tried planetside 2. Those are hardly "linear shooters".

At the very basic level, that is how the game works. It's a constant death match with no end result, does it mean I don't find enjoyment in the game? No, I still do through tactical dominance like you mentioned and the organizational process of my outfit. Thats you're opinion, which is fine, I personally would like to see me and my outfits efforts contribute to some sort of goal laid out for our faction. See how much easier it is to reply like a normal human being instead of being condescending and angsty?

    Theres that arrogance again lol.

Is it even possible for you to have a normal conversation with someone you disagree with? I'm starting to think the condescension has less to do with you not liking my post, and more to do with you just generally being a *****.

The roadmap and dev blogs(like you mentioned) already point to the things I'm talking about coming to us eventually, so yes they shouldn't do anything differently. I'm coming up on a year of playing this game on the 28th, I have no plans to completely stop, but I can say with honesty that I'll be playing more often if my actions in game contributed to a greater goal for my faction
Again, you seem to not understand the point of a discussion forum, or the meaning of discussion. Not every question needs some conclusive answer to give itself meaning, sometimes people like to participate in conversations just to exchange their thoughts and opinions.
    dis-cus-sion:
the act or process of discussing something, typically in order to reach a decision or exchange ideas.

So the source of your condescension and contempt is other people talking to each other about something you don't desire to read/discuss.. and yet here you are discussing it? You take an innocuous question like "does anyone else feel like this" and fire back with an angst filled diatribe giving an ultimatum for anyone who disagrees with you. Do you listen to your own words when you speak? LOL, or how ridiculous you actually sound? Go learn how to voice your disagreements like a normal human being.

I think the problem is that the 3 factions are just 3 different colors. Consider the following
Do you attack a base held by faction 1 the same as you attack a base held by faction 2?
Do you defend a base from faction 1 the same way you defend a base from faction 2?
Is the "experience" of playing the classes significantly different among the factions?

Consider how popular Starcraft would have been if all three races were just a minor variant of terran.
  11. Dovahkiin

Unlikely, I'm so close on quiting on PS2 for good.

Metagaming is a broad term usually used to define any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game.

Also known as the 'game within the game', completely made up by the players themselves.

Therefore, SOE CANNOT ADD A METAGAME TO PS2.

Ask them if they will give you a casino that your character can park your Sundy nearby and go gamble some certs or something.
  13. HerpTheDerp

Would you be more motivated to use a dictionary if I called you stupid for not knowing what meta game means?

  14. Obscura

Who honestly cares? I'm sure everyone in this thread except you knows what I mean. Tell me, would you be more motivated to respond like a normal person instead of like a condescending douch bag if I had not said metagame? Lol probably not.
  15. Obscura

Okay, if you had bothered to actually READ anything in this thread, you would see that by "metagame" I mean "long term goals for each faction". But instead, you choose to reply like an arrogant child by dancing around with technicalities about 1 word I said LOL.
  16. Stew360

Stop to use metagame word when you dont even know what it mean
Metagaming is a broad term usually used to define any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game. Another definition refers to the game universe outside of the game itself.

external factors , goes beyong the suposed limits or environements , outside of the game itself

these are key quote to remember what metagame is , peoples , EVE online is the perfect scene for metagame DRAMA ... Ps2 is a FPS RTS not a role play game where tons of metagming is envolved ...

All your complain as nothing to do with metagame , you think the game as not much depth but depth isnt metagame ....
  17. Obscura

As I said, EVERYONE in this thread knows what I mean, you can clearly infer that I mean long term goals in the SECOND SENTENCE. How about you quit dissecting my posts, and instead muster up the effort to read past the title. Jesus people.
  18. Stew360

your tittle is misleading you should have said ' this game as not long term goal etc..

not this game lack of metagame , players create metagame not the game itself , if you think it lack of metagame its your own fault lol , Ps2 isnt a role play game
  19. Drasilov

Its an MMO - who knows what the devs have planned - all this might be leading up so an alien invasion where we all have to band together to repel the invaders or the planet Is taken over...will there be trust? Will former enemies cooperate etc...

Could run that for a month or so then back to killing each other. MMO's are always on the move.
  20. Obscura

    Who cares?

And it's clearly not misleading if you bother read the content of the post instead of jumping at the first technicality you see. You obviously do not want to contribute anything, you're arguing with someone about a TYPO, do you realize that? And how pathetic it is? It's like me picking out your run on sentences, clearly misspelled words, and other grammatical errors and ignoring the actual content of your posts/
