So this wasn't going to be my next project, but the idea popped in and I decided to rough it out and see what people thought of it. http://p3d.in/1HFPV (-head) http://p3d.in/8z6DZ (+head) The current polycount is 1,983 triangles. Refinement, tweaks and optimization can certainly still be done. Critiques, comments and suggestions welcome!
Looks good to me. I'd make the headset look like it's not actually attached to the hat itself, and move the mic slightly further out so it looks like it can fold upward.
Thanks for the comments all. I intended for the bill to look armored, but now that I look again I think you're right Zulthus; it would benefit from losing the random extrusions. I like your ideas about the headset too Dandler; gonna get to work and see what I can come up with. Thanks!
Update: http://p3d.in/anpyC (+head) http://p3d.in/CCvTb (-head) Extrusions removed from sides of the bill. Headset separated from the rest of the hat, and mic stalk moved out. Some minor changes made to the cloth area. Polycount is now 1,959 triangles, with more that can be trimmed out. Suggestions, comments and crits encouraged!
I already have headsets that are complete and waiting to get in game, though I guess this is different enough.
Definitely present in my mind when I started this. I actually thought of that exact one you posted and mentally weighed whether or not it might be too similar. That is mostly what led to the decision to armor up the cap, have the headset go over the top, and only use one ear. I wanted to try getting TRay to take a look when the stream starts up again, so he can give the thumbs up/down on whether he thinks it's too similar. It certainly is not my intention to step on your toes or divert sales, McFluff; if it's too close for comfort I'm all about trying a version with the headset removed completely. Let me know.
It's really no big deal, I'm mostly making helmets so I can get a free one Though, to allow both of us to earn more money, maybe just add glasses, or something of the sort, to separate our designs even more.
Same here =). I can't wait until that moment someone runs by me in-game wearing something I designed. Good points about changing it up; there seem to have been a number of glasses attempted on other designs, but I'll see if I can come up with a new spin on it or something else to set it apart.
Update: With variations! A: http://p3d.in/vb3My Polycount: 2,414 triangles B: http://p3d.in/SV9gN Polycount: 1,732 triangles C: http://p3d.in/cz996 Polycount: 1,184 triangles Glasses added, and variants introduced with and without glasses and headset. Cloth section reworked and some optimization and general geo cleanup done in various places. Polycount designations are not counting the head obviously, although I didn't feel like including any versions without it this time around. If requested, they can be uploaded. My ability to get Blender's lighting right for clear renders with good contrast seems to come and go . Anyway, make your preferences, suggestions and opinions known; plenty of polys left in the budget for potential changes.
I like it with the shades. Besides if you want it to differ more from Mcfluff's cap you'll need the shades.
Thanks for your post. Agreed, but I think Giz may have meant the version with no shades and no headset, is that right Giz? Either way it might still be moot if TRay doesn't like the shades or the cap in general. Still turning ideas over in my mind, but the input is much appreciated as always!
Put the headset back on it, that looked really cool. the shades seemed a bit to modern, then futuristic.
"Shades could work but the shape of those frames is meh IMO" Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure the shape is really growing on me over time either. "Put the headset back on it, that looked really cool. the shades seemed a bit to modern, then futuristic." Good point, and thanks for your input. I think I'm going to take another crack at the shades and try to come up with something better/more futuristic/sci-fi before I scrap them completely. If it turns out crappy or nothing really clicks I may abandon the idea then. Thanks again for the comments!
