Technolgy can be lost do to cataclysm. The technology that built the pyrimids has been lost (some say surpressed). A technically advanced EQ could have existed before it was completely wiped out and replaced with the original EQ.

After all teleporting is more technologically advanced than guns, but we clump it under magic to make it more ecceptable.

Since I have no nostalgic ties to previous EverQuest iterations I'd say that it'd have to be on a case by case basis.

I think the most important question is, how would they differ from other, similar, concepts. Like guns vs bows/crossbows, and ninjas vs rogues/thieves/assassins/whatever.

Don't really have an opinion on guns, so moving straight to ninjas.

Since movement was a big emphasis in the reveal, a ninja class could have some movement options and such that make it unique and interesting compared to other classes. Wall-running/hanging, shortrange teleportation, smoke screens, etc.

not if done right, or you could say arrows are. i would say eq1 ranger endless quiver was real bad idea but look how well it worked out. just make them premitive type guns with a slow firing and limited ammo

If an affermative answer imply that i have to see in game ogre and troll ninjas using bazookas, well no. Devs should explain what races can play a ninja and what classes can use guns before posting weird polls.
It seems tha devs dont really know what kind of game they want to make
    /facepalm

I dont want guns or ninjas. Monks are just fine as a near- equivalent to ninjas and alot better lore wise. As was mentioned, this isnt a morden day rpg, Warhammer or WoW, this is Everquest, a sword and sorcery rpg :)

    Best post so far.

I think it would depend case by case, I think they could both work very well. I say why not. Ninja could be a hybrid class. Ninja to me isn't that much different than a rogue our assassin.

No the lore was revamped, it did not start from scratch. People using the lore card to say that "anything goes" need to review the panels and other interviews with the developers. This is a new Norrath, but it's still Norrath, it is not Jita (for you EvE lovers). The gods are slightly different, but there are still gods, some of the races have been changed stat wise (Ogres) but we still have the same fundamental races.

So do black-powder weapons of any kind fit in the old or new Norrath Lore; sure cases could be made that black-powder fits in a fantasy setting. But over using black-powder in a fantasy setting, I believe, is very dangerous to the game play.

The dress and style of Ninja's is a little easier for me to imagine in Norrath. I still question what would be so unique to a Ninja that it can't be given to the players through other classes. If SOE wants to put in new weapons then sure have a Ninja, but if someone just thought Ninja's were cool, then they probably don't need to be found in Norrath.

Ninjas are overdone. Heck, if you're going to add ninjas, you may as well add in pirate as a class too.

I know some people like guns, but I hate hate hate them. And I hate when I find one as an upgrade and I am forced to use it. Give me a bow or if you have to, a crossbow. But unless you make one of the crafting skills engineer, we don't need guns.

Honestly don't know how to answer this yet until we know about the lore of the game. Guns, at first glance are a no to me but that is thinking by old lore standards. With a complete reboot maybe they could in. Maybe the gnomes eventually tinkered their way to gunpowder or something similar? Until the lore is revealed that is difficult to answer.

The part about Ninjas. I could see this in game. I would prefer to not call them ninjas, perhaps another name. But I could see the game play fitting in. From seeing the Bruce Lee cut off in the office I have a feeling we will have something similar ;) If it fits the lore I do not think this combat style is a stretch by any means.

Personally, I feel that it kinda adds a cool factor to the game, as mentioned before it should be rare or even "experimental" in some cases (ie chance to fail) and definately must be able to be explained such as via "tinkering" or some such

I think ninjas and firing weapons can fit well into Norrath if done properly. I am sure some there are some puntable Gnomes out there who would love to be able to tinker up firing weapons... Ninjas, why not stealthy assassins with fists of steel and throwing stars... I Like it!!!

I can agree on the sense that none of the current modern implementations are needed per-se, yet what about the evolution of the ideas within the current and evolving game lore. We are looking at the potential of a infinitely evolving world. Do we as players want it to be the same thing over and over again for infinity or do we want cases that break us out and allow us to advance beyond the current norms?

I really think this question should be re-phrased to better deliver a community message. Simply asking if guns and ninjas are acceptable modern terms to incorporate in the game is misleading.

I believe the game devs are asking if the idea of modernization should be introduced into the game mechanic. Ninjas being a stereotypical modernization of the rogue and guns being a stereotypical modernization of projectile weapons. I do not for one minute think they would be so base to just toss in ninjas and modern guns with reckless abandon.

I agree with this completely. We shouldn't be making assumptions on what these additions will be but rather discussing what they could be to make them fit into the world.

For example, reading this got me thinking that a ninja might be a more defensive version of an assassin. Rather than using his stealth for marking a target he could be using it to defend the king or some nobel. You burst out of the shadows to come to the person's aid at the last second.

Finding ways to make new and different ideas work in EQN will only serve to enrich the gaming experience by providing more choices and diversity for everyone.

How I see it is the being able to change out these abilities based on what classes you have unlocked. Not saying you would morph into something in between but instead have the option if you had the ninja class also to swap an ability to fit a specific dungeon, boss, anything really!

Then why call it a ninja?

If you include the name "ninja" in a fantasy game, and neglect to add all that lore people think of when they read "ninja", then you ruin the class in their opinion. That run on water thing is a classic ninja "trick", as is vanishing in an instant and running through walls. The only reason to include the class would be to include the mythical lore, otherwise all you really have is a rogue with martial arts training. If you include the mundane tricks they used to replicate that mythical lore? Then all you have is a rogue with dirty tricks and martial arts training. Best just stick with the rogue and give him the ability to learn martial arts (eventually) and dirty tricks.

The name has all kinds of mythology attached to it. That's largely why most MMOs don't include it and instead feature a shapeless class called "rogue", far fewer preconceptions related to it.

It would be like making a jedi class and neglecting that whole "force" thing. You end up with a fancy sword guy wielding a glowy blade.

Voted : it has no place in #EQN
    • Guns : fireballs, bows ?
I played WoW, and didn't like the 'guns' thing in that game.
    • Ninjas : Rogues, or classes that can apparent to rogues.
Maybe multi-classing could enable some sort of "ninja" abilities, but no ninja class please.
(I don't think Monks could be considered a "ninja" class.)
