How complex should the Landmark design tools be?

While watching the video of landmark today, all I could think is "I want to do that." I want the tools to have the power to create the things I think up. If this means they are complex, well then that is something I will deal with. I taught myself how to program on a C64 back in the 80's and there wasn't exactly a lot of documentation back then. Soooo I am just fine with figuring things out when I am this interested.

Make the tools as robust as possible. Just make sure you have tutorials that show how to use each feature with a little explanation as to why you would use one feature over another. Obviously sony has recognized the incredibly talented people in Everquest/Everquest 2, who can build anything from nothing. I can not wait to see what they can create if you give them say a little texture and color control.

what does it matter what the toons wep looks like? It should matter how they play their toon more.

Minecraft and clones are a dime a dozen. Giving players the same tools to create that the developers have is nothing less than fantastic.

I voted for MineCraft level of tools, simply because they were intuitive and you were doing great things in a matter of minutes. If you make things intuitive, people (myself included) will be more likely to stick with it, and generate the kind of content you're hoping for. If it's too complicated, I believe you would significantly lower your pool of participants.

Let us go at it!! Without the power, everyone's designs will only slightly look different from everyone else's. Think hundreds of thousands of players vs diversity

Some people like things simple, but still want to be able to partake in the activity. Others, such as myself, want to have endless bounds in order to demonstrate their creativity. I feel that both should be available for those that want it. I can already foresee the endless amount of hours I am going to sink into this Landmark tool.

I'd like to see multiple levels of complexity... and I'd like to see the ability to import meshes (in some generic standard format or other) to use to mold your voxels. Building a detailed object by stacking and carving voxels in-game, will probably be much harder than using a dedicated 3d modeling program.

Will these tools also allow us to reshape the land with additional effects? I offer as an example, you are building a small village (for now), but water is not too close, say the nearest stream or river is half a miles away, can we use the destructibility and build ability of these tools to reshape the land and bring that stream to pass next to or through the new village? before returning to the stream further downstream? (Consequences of action may also apply here.)

Needs to be easy to learn but complex enough to build whatever you like. Very excited for this!

I chose the more complicated and powerful tool set. Tutorials can be created by the fan base and by the developers to help assist in utilizing their full potential.

I would hate to see too many look alikes if the toolset was simplified. Great work

I think the majority of complexity comes from the UI itself. If you can make an easy way to create smoothed edges and rounded corners, while still keeping the depth of making insane structures, I don't think there will be any real issues. I just don't want to fiddle through 10s of buttons looking for "how to shave off 2 voxels from "X" block"

It would be useful to have what some graphics options pages have. Simple and advanced views, so you could build some simple things with a minimal interface and less clutter. Then make adjustments with an advanced interface if you choose.

Oh boy, Im seeing double posts and bugginess in general (it is too a word!). I predict some down time =)

I am not familiar with minecrafts toolset, but my thought would be have a simple and advanced version, so people starting out wont be overwhelmed but the more savy users can dive right in. Win win!

I'd like to interject something else as well. When SOE implemented the dungeon creator in EQ2, I was disappointed. The promise of creating something for others to play was a noble idea, but it barely scratched the surface. SOE could pull off what seems the most intelligent, thoughtful way to have it's players create content by way of in game landmarks that could very possibly solve the content consumption conundrum (hooray for alliteration!). The "conundrum" was that no company could create content fast enough to stay ahead of gamer's consumption. I had no idea how it would be done, but the landmark program seems like a great way to start. Kudos to them.

If you want your players to amaze you they need to have all the complexity developers have. Imagine building a spire, and on the voxels you place down inscribed runes, choosing the depth and wear of each one of them. Maybe there are four runes that when examined reveal the haunted nature of the spire. All of that could be used to really make the game in depth.

POWER POWER!!! But there should just be an option for standard controls and then one for the advanced/powerful controls

Ooh, yes. I would love to be able to bring water to a region with an aqueduct, and seeing how the world reacts past my own creation!

If we really want awesome creation, we should give people the tools to make whatever they choose. If the tools are powerful, the creation will be better.

I disagree. It should be as complex as possible. In 5 or 10 years we should still be creating new and exciting stuff, simply because there is just so insanely much complexity.

Add a simple mode, if that helps.
