    None of the above.

Private building if these options are the only ones.

I want the option for my build to be public, or to be able to switch to private if I want to experiment with something, or want to build a surprise for a friend.
If the plot can't be put into an instance during a private build, some sort of velvet curtain, or circus tent over the plot to give privacy would be nice (I guess I could build something, but that would take more materials.)

I would also like the option to turn off the ability to see others who are in build mode. I don't think I would always want to see others hovering around, or see every tiny change to their buildings. I can't imagine that would be easy on the server, or my bandwidth consumption.
Just update their plot when they hit some sort of publish button.

I personally (if given the opportunity) won't be building anything that the community can't see. As a matter of fact, I think it would be cool to see people use my ideas and make them their own.

That being said, for those that are looking to make money or build up their design portfolio for career opportunities, I'd totally respect their privacy during Landmark.

So if you change the question to:
Do you want to build in public or in private in Landmark? Include: I'd like to have the option what I'd like to show vs. keep private while constructing in Landmark.

I think the polls would sway towards "optional".

In my opinion i think there should be both an online & offline mode so the players can decide fro themselves :).

I'd like a toggle because if I want to try to sell my idea, I want to get it on the market so to speak before I show it off. Other times I may just be doing something generic and won't mind company...so I'm not sure how to vote.

How about in-between stages being published? I know when I build things (in EQ2) sometimes, for a while, things are a mess. I don't really want people to see that mess. But then I clean it up and wouldn't mind showing that version of it while I continue on with other stuff. I only suggest this because maybe it is still early enough in the development that the devs could allow something like this.

This way, not everything would be barren for quite a while due to those that don't like to publish messes, but people could still see that some development is going on in the world. You know, maybe I want to build a house, so I start with clearing some land and building a foundation. I "publish" that, and that is all the "public" can see at the moment. (My "friends or those with building permissions on my lot can see what I can see.) Meanwhile, I continue on putting up some walls or framework (hidden from public view). Once I get that to a certain point, I re-publish and now people could see that. Meanwhile I continue on doing some roofing... etc.

I voted for the "decide who sees at all times" option. Money has been incorporated into this system, and if given the chance, people will copy/scoop other ideas and finish/sell them faster than the original person.

I say let everyone see. It would promote more conversation, and cooperation of projects between uses.

I would like an option to keep my plot private until I'm ready to show it off.

    I voted for:
"Letting other people see what I'm building would add to my enjoyment"

This is fairly true, but my real reasoning is I want to see others building as well. When I was working with Metaplace, a now defunct world/game creation service, on user generated content my best ideas often came from seeing what other people were up to or what kinds of things they would need. If a lot of users were in need of a particular type of thing I would make that thing and put it up on the market for no or little cost to help out everyone that was creating content. Keep in mind that low cost in this case was a soft currency, no real money value, so even without monetary rewards I was motivated to fill in peoples needs.

In the case of EQNext Landmark and EQNext there is the added reward of potential profit which would only increase how much I would want to make, but once again I would want to focus on things the community actually wanted and the best way to figure that out is often to see what people are doing and filling in the gaps.

I think that it would be fun to for folks to see what I'm building...and even give feedback on how to improve what I'm working on. I would love to see what others are working on, especially those around where I am building. Its not just about inspiration, but providing a cohesive environment that flows from one area to the next.

If selling for real money wasn't part of Landmark, I would totally go public all the time. But where people's ideas means $, you aren't going to see people who want to share their secrets.

    I voted instances, but I don't really want an instance, I want a toggle/option.

I would really hate to see any type of instancing in Landmark at all.

I think it adds to the ambiance and environment of the world to see people breaking and building things all over the world as you run past, and not just see a big empty world with fully built structures popping into it.

If someone wants to "hide" their unfinished product, or to build something in private before unveiling it that's perfectly fine and they have that right to play how they want to, but they can very easily build a wall or a roof around what they are building and play Willy Wonka behind their curtains and limited plot permissions. People should still be able to see their curtains and walls from outside their plot though, and wonder what is going on inside there, not just be instanced off completely.

Personally I like to build and design and iirc the ideas we come up with may be incorporated into the game itself however I do agree with a lot of the posters there should be a private option that can be toggled or a private instance in such a way where if person does want to sell their idea then they can do so.
Right now I think this is basically going to be a big sandbox for people to play in and sharing ideas and their thoughts so we can basically learn how to use these tools to create a new world and I am ready to dig in when they give me a opportunity to build up down or sideways.

On the subject of privacy. It did bring up the question.

What are Sony's plans toward plagiarism?

While in other games with housing there is little harm in "copying" someones design idea, in Landmark we are able to monetize our ideas.
What happens when someone see's something we have built to publish, or have already published, and they decide to incorporate it into their design without paying for rights. What happens if they decide to sell this piece while avoiding the royalties that come with using someones piece?

The answer to that has major implications on the argument of private vs public builds.

I agree and had similar thought when I read the question. Input from others may help jump start the creative process, especially if what was envisioned is not what is on screen. :)

Personally, I'd want a both public and private construction area. One for the projects that people can see and I can get advise on or just show off as I'm building. The other as a secret lab of sorts, for those items that I'm not prepared to show off yet. The ability to move an item from public to private construction are would be great as well as it would allow someone to add a surprise to a work or get advise for a secret work that they are stumped on.

I voted for an option to hide. I'm not going to be one of the creative people who design something amazing but the option should be in there so those people don't have to rush everything to mitigate their ideas being stolen.

It's a win/win situation. People who want to have their work public can do so. People who don't want to don't have to. Let's keep in mind that this a building tool and not a MMO.

I wouldn't care about anyone being able to see my work in progress or finished, but it would be a real pain if they could destroy it and I'd have to start over. I think this would create a type of camp someone you don't like and destroy whatever they do all the time thingy...

This question offers very little middle ground with its poll options.
I think the game should, by default, allow everyone to see everything you do- that way my friends and I can see how our projects are going and what not.
With that said, I think the opportunity to "get away from it all" should be readily available. I don't mean to bring up minecraft, but in minecraft this problem is solved via Singleplayer mode & Multiplayer mode being available.
I don't readily agree that this game should do the same thing, but I think there should be an option for people to build in private for those who enjoy a less social experience, or perhaps feel embarrassed over the work they spent so much time (or so little time) creating.
