Well as much as I would like to belong to an adventuring guild and a tradeskill guild, I'm not sure I could handle the drama of more than one guild at a time. The mistells may get out of hand on my part as well :D

Ideally, your guild should be something not chosen lightly. It should fit - if it doesn't you should move along until you find the right fit. I should be able to adventure, tradeskill, raid, joke and be social with my guild, not just one facet of each.

We can't choose our family, but we can choose our guild/

To me, Guilds and Social Groups can be very different.

My idea of a Guild is a group of people united under the guild's leadership working towards a common goal while a "Community" or Social Group would be a group of people that share similar interests.

    Why not have both?

Being a part of a Guild and a part of a Social Group doesn't need to be mutually exclusive.

A player could be part of <Guild Epicloot>, which is focused on high level content and raiding, but also be part of <Social Group of Crafting> that is geared towards crafting and shared ideas on the subject, as well as part of <Magic Users of Norrath> social group, geared towards shared ideas of certain class builds related to magic-types, etc.

tl;dr: One Character restricted to 1 Guild, but allowed to be involved in many Social Groups.

I prefer only one guild per character, it would make it much easier, because depending on the situation you will be deluged with messages, and it can end up polluting your chat, and if you block chat for a guild, it is better not to enter.
Not to mention that it is easier for you to create an Alt and enter in another guild, so when you want to talk to the guys, you go and logs that character, if not, just stay on your main.

Not a fan of how multi-guilding ended up working in another game so I'd prefer not to see it again.

I would prefer that we stick with the one guild per character. Having said that, it would be nice if SOE would formalize the inevitable Guild Alliances that will spring up.

With world events(rally points) and the possibility of contested content, I really like the idea of having alliances between guilds. I could also see crafters forming "unions" of some sort so that they could also pool resources to help progress both their own skills and world content.

I think that perhaps having a guild and family would be good. In addition, make one guild per character, but offer up the chance to form alliances with other guilds. This way, if your guild can't help, you can ask the help of family or alliance.

I love the idea of having several types of guilds!

My husband, close friends and I always create a very small, tight knit guild in every MMO we play. We then try to group together with PUGs and guilds that need an extra couple of players for large-scale content, and we're always eventually pressured to "join our guild" because they'd rather have a full guild group doing content than to have a few non-guild tagalongs.

We're regularly faced with the criticism that our guild is small and therefore useless - but we have a strong emotional attachment to playing together and we don't want to abandon our "family" guild for someone else's even though we like their playstyle and hanging out with them. The ability to have some other kinds of communities would really give us the chance to express the different kinds of relationships we have.

I don't see myself as joining more than one family or even more than one guild - I am a committed person. But there's different types of commitment!

I think the idea of an in-game mechanism for family, guild and alliance would be amazing. It shouldn't introduce too much annoyance for people, family would probably function as a sort of close friends group chat and guild chat would be as normal. Finally, alliance chat would be only be for people who are part of an alliance, which normally uses a channel anyway. So this adds a bit of formality to something that mostly already exists.

I would like to see different types. A social guild, crafting guild, combat guild. I would also like to see things like alliances or coalitions of guilds that can ban together or even smaller social gatherings like clans. I would not like to be in multiple guilds that are for the same thing, such as being in two combat based guilds.

I personally don't really see the point of joining multiple guilds, but I wouldn't mind if there was the option for those who want to.

What I would like to see though is in-game support for guild alliances. Not just a common chat channel, perhaps shared guild progression in some manner and shared rewards.

A guild is a social structure that I see no reason why it /has/ to be one per character. Primarily a guild in games right now is a way to display an affiliation next to your name, and a way to chat / communicate. The tools already exist in most games that could support allowing you to select which of multiple guilds you want 'displayed' and to allow you to chat in multiple social guild channels which are distinct from eachother. This would allow 'guild' alliances to form their own new "guild" that is the alliance and to have their own structure within that alliance seperate from the individual 'guilds' that form the alliance.

I think that would be a good thing.

I find the concept of "one guild" restrictive the way we currently think of guilds. I'll end up being a member of many communities (guilds, raid alliances, friend groups, tradeskill coalitions, you name it) and would love it if there were support for those other groups as well as for formal "guilds".

Guilds should be one character per guild. Now there is room for social "Clubs" which does not have the same feature set as a guild. I view guilds as communities looking to accomplish large task such as raids, player cities, etc. Guilds would also offer leveling incentives and bonuses based on leveling.

Clubs can be joined along with guilds, but purely for a social experience of different reasons. Perhaps a group of individuals that share common interest such as crafting that may not be in the same guild or random people you've grouped for dungeons or leveling. Clubs are basically glorified chat channels, but you can still offer some of the tools guilds have such as rosters, basic information such as crafting skills (if designed for a crafting club) or roles/specs/classes (if designed for leveling/dungeon clubs).

I like the idea of different types of guilds, in a real world sense with artisan guilds and other profession based guilds (eg. Thieves' Guild). Then a 'guild' in the term of other social based groups which appears to be what the normal MMO 'guild' Manifests as. In out daily lives we all belong to many 'guilds' in essence.
But I agree with others in that the actual workings of that in the game may be too much to handle. At the least, at first the system should be as simple as possible, then can be built upon later if it turns out the actual base is there for more complexity; it is harder to pare things down than to add to them in most cases .

Keep it simple with one guild, but give us some tools to create an alliance with other guilds. When it comes to doing raids, you often need members from another guild to help you fill out a raid group. This will only strengthen the community as a whole. I would also like to see a separate chat for this alliance. I think that would be the best road to take when it comes to guilds. Great topic BTW!

If we're talking about a traditional social/raid type guild then yes I would say one per character, but if there will be npc/city type guilds where you could qualify to join either through some achievement, adventure, quest, task etc then I see no reason why a player could not be part of multiple in game organizations. If all your actions to date can influence your interaction with the world then why not your factional/political affiliations in the game and how certain guilds within cities react to you?

One character, one guild. This will prevent guild ****** and more guild problems. If youve never managed a guild I can imagine how you would want to be in 25 different guilds and play with everyone. There needs to be structure. 1 guild, 1 guild house, 1 character. If you want to join a "goofy guild" then make a noob character and be goofy with them. Dont bring your childness to your raiding clan.

Dont make the wrong decision on this one EQN! I know you want to be innovative, but this is a key point for us min/maxers
