I just started playing this game and started a DE Shadowknight. He has been great (level 78 now), but as I'm leveling and learning the basics of the class, I am starting to relalize my most powerful spells are AOE, and have a threat component to them. I'm not sure what role he would have in raids as DPS only. I don't want to be a tank in the end game, so I'm thinking of semi retiring him and starting a new character. I will most likely go the Heroic route, although I have not set that in stone yet. I understand the impact this can have. Starting to learn a new character, already leveled with a crapload of new spells can be quite a burden at first. However, I do plan on running dungeons, or at least want to. This will help me learn the class (staying alive) should I choose this route. This is the most fun to me, and what I did with my SK (with a MERC) for most of his levels. I did run Dungeon Maker from 50-60 or so though. So, my question is... what Mage class would be best for this style of play, and also be great DPS in raids end game? I'm thinking Necro. This is what I played in EQ and enjoyed him. Thanks in advance!
Sounds to me like your mind is already made up, run with it. When we got our free heroics I used mine on a necro, and am loving her. Great DPS, and if I am feeling generous, decent utility between hearts, heals and rez. Just make sure to get the best pet you can get (at least expert if you can get the rare and know a sage), as they are a hefty part of your DPS. You may also find that if you go heroic your gear is going to be better than what any 85 had when DoV came out, so odds are you will be tanking for your merc, so you might want to consider a healer merc if the tank one doesn't work out so well.
Do groups/raids actually like pet classes now? If the answer is still no, I'd go warlock. If you play mainly solo you can't beat Necro.
I think more than a few people feel the warlock is in need of some love from the dev team, so maybe wizard would be a less hindered class for now?
