does it make your characters unplayable? what about the races that are only unlocked with subscription, are they still allowed to be used if you have already created them?
If your gold account lapses and becomes bronze/silver the classes and races that have to be unlocked are blocked. So yea, they become unplayable until you either buy the unlockers or re-sub to gold status.

Yep, even if it's max level etc, if you haven't previously purchased the unlockers they become unplayable once your gold sub runs out. Gold doesn't perma-unlock anything.
Yep only permanent unlocks are from the SC-Unlockers as they flag your Silver account. Technically we are all Silver... just some have the "gold" access flag on their accounts.
If you drop down to Silver from Gold, any character the was created after the FtP model was introduced that is not a "free" race/class will be locked. Also any legendary/fabled gear will also be unusable. Only the last 4 characters that you played will be playable since you will be limited to 4 character slots. Some of your bag slots will be locked also. You can remove things from your locked bags but can not add anything to them unless you unlock them. There are unlockers for almost everything in game but if your going to unlock everything, you might as well renew your gold membership.
A couple things to remember as well: If you are wearing anything above treasured gear, it will be taken off of you and put in bags/overflow, not to mention, as an unpaid account, say you have 500pp on your toon, the second you try to do anything with that plat, its going to take like 490 of it away from you, and send it where plat goes to die. you can only carry 10pp on you at a time with the lesser accnt subs. so, if you are planing on reducing your membership, plan a little ahead.
They did - from the Nov 13th 2012 update notes : MEMBERSHIPS There are no longer coin limits on any account types.
Partially correct - if the character / class was created before the game went ftp that specific character is still playable even without the unlockers purchased
