What did you name your monk and why?

Just rolled a new alt, currently brawler headed towards monk. He's a wood elf named Shi'dai, eventually will be Shi'dai Gong. I pulled the name from a bit of research into Shaolin kung fu, where I discovered that "Shidaigong" was the Mandarin term meaning "Grand Master" in a Shaolin temple. (In Cantonese, this title was expressed as "Sitaigung.")

I looked at a lot of other terms and names, from Mantis to Shaolin ("reserved or too naughty" ??) and thought of using one of the ancient Shaolin temple names (Henan, Fukien, Kwangtung, O Mei Shan, and Wutang), until I found the term for "grand master."

How about you? Any special reason behind your monk's name?
  2. ARCHIVED-Lebru1 Guest

I named mine by using the 1st two letters of my name and 1st 3 of my lastname. Lebru sounds like a monk name to me anyway )

Everyone should just name their monk after pornstars or asian funny names like Hooflungg Poo

yup here goes the hierarchy of kung fu (cantonese, i dont remember the mandarian ones)

Sihing sihingdai (brother or sister, usually referred to as your senior)
Sifu (your teacher, also kind of means father figure)
Sigung (your teacher's teacher, your grand father)
sibok (your kung fu uncle, your sifu's kung fu brother)
Simo (your kung fu aunt, your sifu's sister)

Its treated like a big family. Like for example the late bruce lee used to train with late grand master yip man in hong kong back in the day. Yip Man was his sifu, yip man taught my sifu's sifu (my sigung) so in a way bruce lee would be a distant sibok of mine, but I don't try to claim that or anything. Especially since I have progressed way further than bruce lee ever did, and he went on to form his own martial art called jeet kune do, which I do not study.

That is why in all those kung fu movies you see them calling each other brother and sister. They really are not blood related, they just study under the same sifu, so therefore they are kung fu brother and sisters. All the people I train with are my brothers and sisters so to speak. Its a part of the chinese culture you kind of adapt.

but back on subject, my monk is named Wong Fei Hung, and well, I am sure you all get that reference.

I'm more fond of Japanese Culture then Chineese, and being an evil born character, I constructed a name from my (very) limited knowledge of the Japanese language. I model my character more after an Aikido master (even though we don't get grapples and throws,) then a kung fu master.

Anyways, my characters name is Akurei no-ko Inazuma, loosely translated to First born to the "demon" of Storms.

Demon has about 10 different translations in Japanese, from Akuma to Akurei

no-ko adds the first born (I forget the literal translation, it's like first child, or first son.)

Inazuma has three meanings from what I can remember, the first is storms, the second if I remember right is lightning, and the last is contextual speed of lightning.

So now you have a Dark Elven monk, who has a supernatural heritage, (if you believe names have deeper meaning,) who has become a monk to provide focus for his dark gifts.

Was doing a research project many years ago and came across this monestary. Loved the name of the village (Soloca) and has used it every since then.

Harpax Kaigara, which was the name of my eq1 monk... Harpax was the online name I've used for many years.

A harpax is a giant grappling hook that was mounted to the front of Roman boats on a giant crossbow. The hook was shot out and attached to enemy ships so they could be pulled close and boarded. Turns out it was a very fitting name for an EQ1 monk.

Kaigara is a loose translation of "empty shell" in Japanese, which I took after a good role play story that happened in my guild. On my old EQ1 server, there were a number of friends of mine who started up Monk alts later in their career who also used Kaigara as their last name. Those toons were given use to a rare set of Werewolf Claw Gloves (low level gear, but ultra rare for some reason!) that Harpax used when he was "young".

Interesting info about kung fu 'family' relationships, Gangster. And yes, I do remember the name Wong Fei Hung from several kung fu movies, but wasn't he originally a legend (perhaps based on reality) in ancient China?

I also considered using Amida Tong, but "Amida" sounded more like a female name than a male. :)
  11. ARCHIVED-GangsterFist Guest

Yeah Wong Fei Hung is a fabled Hung Gar master back in the day that was suppose to be "unbeatable". However, its legend and there is no physical proof he ever existed.

Gage is what I want to name my son if I ever have one and Mikel will be his middle name because I think it sounds cool together.

I did not name him after the kid in pet cemetary though :p

But yeah, I've always liked the name so I figured why not, I don't plan on having a kid anytime soon (or having my gf have a kid, since the other, well... yeah).

Aetheris Manu is pretty obvious. It's latin for "Heaven's Fists". Anyone like to take a guess if I'm a Qeynos Citizen or not? :smileyvery-happy:

Taka was the character in The Last Samurai played by actress, Koyuki. She was full of wisdom, humility, grace and had a silent strength that was very much an inspiration to Tom Cruises' Nathan Algren. An awesome movie.

[edit:] Now if I could just think of a fitting surname. :)

I named my monk Razorblade, mainly due to a toon i had in EQOA. he was a human monk who wielded the spiked claws, hence his name razorblade. i made the eq2 toon with a mohawk to better suit his name, lol. :smileyvery-happy: his fullname is Razorblade Romance, just becaause i thought it sounded cool, lol. romance kind of reflects his heritage, since a romance can be the combination of two things, for example him being a half elf.

    Shuriken Tranquilfist

Named after a couple weapons in EQ (tranquilfist being monk-only). Shuriken Tranquilfist is also the name of my orginal monk back in EQ.
