Nah. Seems like everyone and their brother has a necro. (Many don't know how to play them, but a lot of people have them.)* *Hint: If you are a Necro and you know how to play, I wasn't talking about you.

As for underrated and not very popular, I'd vote one of the enchanters (coercer or illusionist). Warlocks seem to be in a slump right now, as was mentioned, but I don't think that's due to being underrated as much as being gimped by recent GUs.
Enchanters would be great if the devs would STOP giving us Mage gear and give us more scout like gear...nothing shows how much the devs have no clue how a enchanter is played then the coercer myth cloak...
U need focus a little For PvP Warlock---> AE fest top parse and hold more that some tanks Conj ---> photon canon with evil pet, up on parses too Necro ---> same as conj but with heals Wizz---> Good dmg, more single target soo end with many kills, as warlock, a tank with robe Illu ---> still have use for the extra dmg, pets owned in BGs Coercer ---> the black duck, but fun to play. CC win battles if u know the class. For PvE Coercer ---> Allways needed in any raid, allways in need on guilds. Illu ---> Basic for raids too, all caster will luv u Conj / Necro ---> nice dps for raid Wizz ---> work nice in raid Warlock ---> betray to wizz and try again.
