    Good Day ROAD TRIPPERS!!!!

Our expeditions in Athens continue!!! I absolutely love everything we have seen and there is so much more to see and do but we cannot spend the entire summer here although I could plan out the rest of the summer just here in Athens alone!!! So lets get a move on!!!

Today, our first stop will be, the Digital Museum Plato. This is an interactive museum near the Plato Academy in Athens. Here is a link to their website:

    http://www.plato-academy.gr/en/web/guest/museum

Next we are going to the Athens City Museum. This museum is geared more towards Athens in modern times. Here is a link to their website:

    https://athenscitymuseum.gr/en/history-and-buildings/

Our next stop is The Bathhouse of the Winds. This is the only public bathhouse of Athens that still survives. It is a museum now, so no, we are not bathing there!!! Here is a link to their website:

    http://www.mnep.gr/en/visit/the-bath-house-of-the-winds/the-monument/

Next we are going to visit the Ancient Baths. These were located during the building of the Metro in Athens and the Metro was relocated and the Baths were excavated and opened to the public. Here is a link to the government website:

    http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/gh351.jsp?obj_id=12841

Next we will be seeing the Epigraphic Museum. This museum houses 14,078 inscriptions in stone, marble, and clay of Greek Laws, funerary inscriptions, and more ranging from the 8th Century BC to the late Roman period. Here is a link to the government website:

    http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/1/eh151.jsp?obj_id=3348

The next stop we will make is to the The Holocaust Memorial of Greece. This is a broken Star of David, made of yellow marble as the Jewish people of Greece were made to wear a yellow Star of David. Here is a link to a Jewish tourist site:

    https://koshergreece.com/athens-the-surrounding/holocaust-memorial/

For our next stop, I read about this shop and thought some if not all of you might find it interesting and make an interesting find. So we are stopping at the Amorgos Antique Store. They specialize in antique toys and jewelry among other things. Their prices are very reasonable and the items are antiques so much better quality than you will find in the touristy shops. They have a lot of shadow puppets. I couldn't find a website for them, but here is a blog about the shop:

    https://blog.butlair.com/unique-greek-souvenirs-retro-toys-gift-karagiozis/

Next we will be visiting the Bouleterion. This is the ruins of what would be equivalent to the US Senate/House of Representatives Chambers. Here is a link to the wiki and a Greek website:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouleuterion

    http://www.fhw.gr/projects/bouleuterion/en/katopsis/athens.html

Next we are going to visit the Greek Gastronomy Museum. Unfortunately their webpage is not working so I am pasting some information I found on a blog that had a bunch of non-related stuff on it. Here is the clip:

The museum contains some permanent exhibitions explaining the processing involved behind popular products such as olive oil. It also has temporary displays running for a few months at a time.

There is a museum shop on the ground floor, and a courtyard cafe. The cafe serves coffee and snacks during the day, and a selection of meals in the evening. The entire concept of the Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens, is to educate people about Greek cuisine.

Our next stop is a 3 in 1. First we will be visiting the Museum of Zoology at the University of Athens. Here is a link to their webpage:

    http://en.biol.uoa.gr/museums-gardens/museum-of-zoology.html

Second, we will be visiting the Botanical Museum at the University of Athens. No link for their webpage, it is under construction!!!

And third, last but not least, we will be visiting the Botanical Garden at the University of Athens. No link to their webpage either, it is also under construction.

But these are collections of live and fossilized plants in the Museum and the Gardens going back over 100 years from Greece and all over the world. The also have a seed repository.

Next we are going to the Spathario Museum of Shadow Theatre. This museum will hopefully explain to us exactly what Shadow Theatre is!!! Here is a link to their website:

    http://www.karagiozismuseum.gr/en/presentation/index.htm

Next we are off to the Museum of Mineralogy and Petrology. This is part of the University of Athens. You know how I love geology and mineralogy!!! Here is a link to their website:

    http://museums.geol.uoa.gr/mineralogy/MuseumMinPet/enhistor.html

Our next stop is the Greek Reptile Centre. This center has one of the largest collections of reptiles in all of Europe. Here is a link to their site, you may need to translate it:

    https://sites.google.com/site/erpetaorg/

Our last stop today will be the Postal & Philatelic Museum. This museum contains the history of postal, telephone, telegraph, stamps, safes, and more. Here is a link to the Athens Info site:

    http://www.athensinfoguide.com/wtsmuseums/philatelicmuseum.htm

Cocktail hour is 6 pm and dinner is 7 pm at Meat the Grill in Rhodes.

well at the beginning of my Malta presentation I mentioned , that so many cultures came through Malta , and being so close to
North Africa and when I saw that there are at least 360 churches in this nation I was wondering about the presence of the other 2 great monotheistic religions .

    There's never enough grave digging!

To be honest, this cathedral marble floor is ghastly. I always call this kind of thing the style "horreur du vide" ("emptiness horror style")
  9. Schmetterling Well-Known Member

I know but if I keep on digging , I keep on finding .
You won't belief all the other awesome things I found outside of Malta , but that's for when we get there .
or maybe I put together a post for " Night of the Dead " the most poetic Graveyards , or the scariest GYs
    and so on .

O yes and the place just before the white olives is called the " Moorish Terrace "
And white olives are quite rare .

I've seen most of the museums and wondered why I never saw the Pierides Museum of Ancient Cypriot Art. Well, it opened 2 years after my last visit, so no surprises I missed it.

because even people who live in those places have not seen it all .
When I grew up , I had no idea what there is all to see in my town till we had visitors and we showed them around .
I tell you showing somebody else your town helps a lot to get inquisitive .
This road trip also makes us fins a lot of hidden gems , the internet helps , and I am sure we still miss a lot of stuff .

    Good Day ROAD TRIPPERS!!!

Since our resort is on the island of Rhodes, I thought perhaps we should adventure in Rhodes. So lets get a move on, I hope everybody ordered a big hearty breakfast!!!

This is a clip from the wiki, followed by a link to the wiki:

Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum. The island has a total area of 540.81 square miles and an estimated population of 115,490 people.

Gero decides the only quick way to get up nearby the observatory is to use the Scout pace... walk 50 steps, run 50 steps... Gero decides he can no longer do that. Wheeze.

It is closed, but he has a nice folding telescope. He unfolds it and looks at several galaxies, some nebula, and a planet or four.

He notices a small crowd, attaches a camera to the telescope, and a screen hovers in the air where everyone can see it. They ooh and ah, and then he folds everything up and puts it away. Walks back to the hotel.

    Has a nice evening meal.
