Hi all, So spells have levels. Like for example for Beastlord Quick Swipe II to VII. And then they have the Apprentice to Adept (for example). But here is the confusion. Quick Swipe VIII(Apprentice) does 1053-1595 damage, while Quickswipe VII(Adept) does 1133-1723 damage. Shouldn't the lowest (Apprentice) of a level VIII still do more damage than the (Adept) of the lower level VII? This tells me I should pick the Level VII(Adept) over the Level VIII(Apprentice). Head spinning. Any help for this newbie will be appreciated. Thanks
At face value, you'd think it would be logical, but it doesn't quite work that way. You're comparing, if you'll forgive the expression, apples to oranges. You've progressed a rank within that spell, while in the other you're a rank amateur. You can have higher levels of spells that actually do more damage until you progress past a level where the higher spell level will overtake the lower level spell in damage. To compare, look at what the adept Quick Swipe VIII does vs. the Adept level VII spell. You'll pick up on the trend with more experience. In this xpac, experts outpaced the last xpacs Grandmasters of same spell. You'll also see an aberration in some spells where it's flat hard to beat the previous version of a Celestial at higher levels. Put another way, just because a kid is a grade higher than you doesn't necessarily mean he's smarter. He's just a grade ahead atm.
Just to add to Bhayar's the older spells are resisted a lot easier, if you are fighting mobs with a greyed out spell you may actually be doing less damage than you think. At least that's the way it used to work, not sure if that's changed over the years or not.
Older spells are resisted more and higher levels mean less successful resists by mobs. It's good to read your spell descriptions by right clicking on them and examining them. You will note that higher levels (moving from apprentice to expert, master and so forth within a spell level means less mob resistance which is a good thing.
