In our guild group last night we got some runes from the Thalumbra zones. Some say solo, some say heroic, some say raid. Please if someone could give an explanation of the difference it would be a huge help. Do you have to use specific ones in a certain type of instance or for example would a raid one work well in a solo and/or a heroic zone?
You can use them in any zone. I believe you are talking about armor runes and not war runes. The Solo, Heroic and Raid tag represents the tier of the item, Solo being the lowest tier, Raid the highest. You would want to wear the highest tier available to you.
It just shows where they come from and the tier of their stats. Using the crit bonus runes for example, the solo gives an extra 4%, heroic gives 4.4% and raid gives 4.6%.
