Alternate currencies are any currency that isn't copper, silver, gold, or platinum. When obtained, these currencies will automatically appear in the currencies tab of your character window, and not in your bags. A modern example of an alternative currency would be Obol Obscura (commonly called "purple coins") that are obtainable from most Visions of Vetrovia weekly missions.

"Can't be modified except by direct means" is a common phrase on many item effects. It means that no other item, spell, or ability can alter the stated effects, unless that ability specifically specifies that effect as being modified. Consider The Grimling Zero's Ornament or its two counterpart adornments. Their final ability (from having all three equipped) increases Fervor, Fervor Overcap, Flurry, and Flurry Multiplier. The stats granted by these adorns cannot be increased by any ability that would otherwise increase the bonuses granted by items. However, the item Cerebral Incubator can increase the stats granted by those adornments, because it specifically calls out "Brawl for One" by name.

The food and drink slots on your character window are simply places to put food and drink that you would like to auto-consume. Food and drink not only improve your out-of-combat health regen and power regen, but high-level food and drink also provides potency, crit bonus, and other useful stats. Player-crafted food and drink tends to be the best obtainable versions, with mastercrafted versions being even better.
