Partly I wanted to test and see if I could add a table to a message, but I also have some questions for the knowledgeable among you. These are the results from the ACT harvesting plugin. I won't post every single view, it has a view for each type of node, and you can reverse it so you can see where you got the most (tungsten or whatever) from.

The plugin is about 3/4 of the way down this page: http://advancedcombattracker.com/download.php The only data I changed was to specify I was looking at the Ethereal Shrubs view in the table above.

    So the questions.

    1. I'm interpreting the above as # Collects = how many nodes, and # Items = how many total items from those nodes.

So for Adzuki bean, it would be,
I received them 47 times, and due to multiples in gathering, I received a total of 258 this trip. For average, I can expect that if I get adzuki bean on one collect (gathering skill) of one node, I can expect about 5 of them to be the result.

There's another column but it made so little sense I skipped it. It looks like this:

    # Rares % Rares
    5 100.00%
    0 0.00%
    5 100.00%
    0 0.00%
    0 0.00%
    0 0.00%
    0 0.00%

I think that is probably under construction. But it does make more sense in the overall "All" view below.

This version is the "all nodes" view:

    Type # Collects % Collects # Items % Items Avg Items/Collect # Rares % Rares
    All 1101 100.00% 5221 100.00% 4.74 63 100.00%

In case anyone's wondering why I am going after this tier, it's for the Prismatics. This was only hour 1, so I didn't expect to get one yet.

    Further Questions:

    2. Is effulgent material "a rare"? I never considered it to be, but looking at it like this, it does seem so.
    3. Taking the example of Etherwood Lumber (in blue), what do the three percents mean? The first I think might be pretty clear, but the difference between %item and %Rare is less clear to me.

I used that example because it was a 1 for 1, if you got one, you only got one. Ashebone clover (in green) is different, I got more than one item per collect.

    4. Getting more than one item per collect.. due to bountiful harvest? I don't think I ever saw "You gather 2 [ashebone clover] from ethereal shrub" in the chat log, but I could be wrong.

    5. Unless I'm missing something, # of Rares for Ashebone Clover is incorrect. Because I actually got 7 rares, not 5, so again I'm wondering if the % Rares/ # Rares section is under construction, or hasn't been updated for the 49-50% bountiful harvest we're using now.

I'm so glad there's a way to keep track of what I harvest! :)

Oops obviously the nice table format didn't look so nice once I posted it. Hmm. Advice welcome on that too.

ACT only gets its numbers by parcing your log file. So it doesn't use any of your character info, just the results of your performance. Saying it isn't taking account of some harvesting stat is meaningless. It isn't figuring out you're stats, it is tracking your actual (logged) performance.

Type = What is tracked on this line
    # collects = How many pulls you've made. Each node can be harvested 3 times, but ACT only tracks how many times you've harvested, not how many nodes you've run into.
% collects = what percentage of the harvested material broken down for each type of node. Make sure you update when new nodes are introduced.
    # items = how many of each item was collected this run.
% items = what percentage of the items collected this represents
Avg items/collect = the average of how many items were collected per pull
    # Rares = how many rare harvests of this type were harvested.
% Rares = what % of all rares harvested this session are this type. Kind of a stupid stat considering its dependent on how many times you've harvested that node type. Would make more sense if you looked at a single node type.

    (2) Imbuing Materials should be at 2%. If you had a longer harvesting session, it should go up as a percentage, and they are found across all normal nodes.

(3 &4) Etherwood Lumber is special. When you pull a bubunga harvest in Vesspy Isles there is a 50% chance you'll get a bonus Etherwood Lumber, and I think you always get 1 from that. Other rares, its possible to get 1-2 per harvest. Sometimes the log line will say you got 2 of a rare. Sometimes it will be 2 lines of "you harvest 1 <rare>" produced from the same harvest. Not sure how ACT treats that.

    (5) Looks like that is the # rare collects followed by the # rare. 5 pulls with 7 results. You have 1 unlabeled column in that table.

I like that terminology you're using, it's much clearer than what I was thinking. # "Pulls" = # Collects not number of nodes.

As far as "Saying it isn't taking account of some harvesting stat is meaningless" though, I may not have been clear, but I don't know for sure you meant in relation to my comments in question 5. If so, I'll explain a bit. Otherwise ignore the following. :)

So in question 5, it seemed odd to me that # Rares would be 5 and not 7 on this line:
    Type #Collects %Collects #Items %Items Avg Items/Collect #Rares %Rares
    ashenbone clover..... 5..... 0.45%..... 7..... 0.13%..... 1.4 ..... 5..... 7.94% (added spaces between columns)

I guess #Rares = number of times any pull resulted in this rare
not #Rares = number of this rare in this logging session.

Which dovetails with what you said earlier "# Rares = how many rare harvests of this type were harvested." Assuming you mean how many pulls resulted in (any number of) this rare.

That may be why I mentioned it isn't taking into account the bountiful harvest. Seemed like the assumption of those last two columns was that only one rare could result from one pull. Except in the previous column we can see that they did include the avg items /collect.

The unlabeled column is just a copy-paste, I suppose it could be labeled "ToV" or Tier 11.

    All .....1101..... 100.00%..... 5221..... 100.00% ..... 4.74 ..... 63 .....100.00%

If I'm interpreting that right, I pulled 1101 times, and this resulted in 5221 items total, regardless of type. On any one pull, the average was 4.74 items of any type. The number of pulls that resulted in (one or more) rare is 63. This part seems weird to me so maybe I"m not interpreting right, of the rare pulls, 100% resulted in a rare? Looks like it's doing 63/63 = 1.

In my mind that is telling me something I don't quite grasp yet because in my mind the % Rares would be

    63 collects with rares
    /
    1101 collects

if we're making a proportion of "pulls." That isn't what it's calculating though, because that would be 5.72% not 100%. Or maybe the calculation makes more sense in other lines, but doesn't tell us anything on the first line.

The ashebone clover line has a hint I just noticed. 5 pulls resulted in at least one AC. 63 pulls resulted in any rare. That proportion is 7.94% as shown. So an insight into expectation of rares which is what I"m looking for and I assume anyone is... is that you must only take members of one type of node if you want the %Rares column to mean anything like what it sounds. This explains the current trend of nodes appearing in one location, and why it's better to fly a bit rather than have a tighter circuit and take all nodes (unless you're in areas with placeholder nodes).

Pretending for a second that I was only taking bushes and I wanted to figure out how long to harvest for an average chance of 10 of them. (Again a reminder I was looking for Prismatics, but this is a thought experiment.)

Anyone could just set a stopwatch and stop after 10, and repeat until they had a good sense of the length, but the harvesting plugin is fun also.

This harvest log is helpful more in the Ethereal Shrubs - in this thought experiment (that data is in the OP). It's the % Items that is closest to what is meant by "drop rate" as it's used in discussions about whether or not something is too rare or too frequent or whatever. That's7 ashebone clover among 847 items total, all items from a node that drops it. And the percent we see is 0.83% "drop rate" or % of items. It "feels like" that was a good return on my time despite a small "drop rate" so now I can turn my attention to the rare I do want from this tier, armed with the knowledge that small numbers do not mean "too rare."

I know this seems a bit over-specific and over-thinking. But so many times there is a complaint or other about drop rates and we may as well know what we're talking about. Otherwise it's all noise. Doing my part to increase the signal to noise ratio while learning to use a nice tool. :D

I was using the first character who opted to give up the gathering goblin, so the harvest speed buff was "on" -- It makes a lot of sense now what the tradeoff is. If "drop rate" is what someone is attempting to improve, then the speed buff is the way to go. It improves rate over time, though not rate of drops from nodes per collects. I didn't understand what that was offering me until now.

I didn't know ACT could do this:

    Time,Action,Amount,Item Name,Node Name,Rare
    9:31:29 AM,buy,200,Sparkling Sandpaper,Corva Eiskairn for 1 Gold, 92 Silver,False
    11:04:24 AM,buy,199,Sparkling Sandpaper,Morag McMarrin for 1 Gold, 91 Silver, 4 Copper,False
    11:04:26 AM,buy,200,Sparkling Sandpaper,Morag McMarrin for 1 Gold, 92 Silver,False

On FG it's a nice feature.

It is not considered a "common". When you are depositing into a harvest depot and do a "depost all - common" it stays in your bags.

    Personally, I'd consider it an "uncommon". It doesn't trigger a rare message, but I'd assume ACT just lumps things into common and rare, and decided since the depot doesn't call it common, it is rare. However, I've never used ACT, so ... {shrug}
