EQ2 will not run.

EQ2 for the last few days, has been crashing after character select, after changing toons. But now, the game will not start at all. I can either try to log in with a character or character select and the game just simply closes after a few seconds. I have probably tried logging in about 10 times this morning and have not been able to play.

    Hi Nights,

While this does sound like some sort of bug it doesn't seem to be widespread, I would definitely reach out to Customer Service to see if one of their techs could assist with troubleshooting the issue. Whatever it is sounds like it escalated.

Have you tried the simple stuff?

    (1) Start the Launchpad. When you get to Character Select, try hitting the up arrow a bunch of times, repeat with the down arrow. This sometimes forces it to redisplay. Did that help?

    (2) Shut down the game, shut down your computer, reset your modem and router. Then turn it all back on. Start the Launchpad, and click the Advanced Tools button (crossed hammer and wrench icon). Ask it to validate files. Did that help?

    (3) Close the game, then try opening your EQ2 folder and deleting your logincache-us and/or logincache-eu folders. Start the Launchpad again but don't select a character in the Launchpad, let it go to the Character Select screen. Did that help?

So, as for the lag. The next step, if the things above don't help, would be to get more information:

    (1) Go to http://speedtest.net/ -- Click Begin Test, then click Share This Result, then copy the URL it gives you into your reply here. This tells us something about your ISP, type of connection, and UL/DL speeds.

    (2) From the START button, in the little window type CMD and hit enter to open a command window. Otherwise, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories, right-click the Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator" (For Windows 8 - Press the WINDOWS and X keys together and then click on Command Prompt (Admin). Click Yes to the User Account Control message that appears.)

    (3) In the CMD window, you should have a folder address (mine says C:\Users\Administrator>) with a flashing cursor after it. Type in each of three three commands below, one at a time, and let each run. You know it's done when you get the folder address and cursor back.
    • ipconfig /all > c:\netinfo.txt
    • tracert lpj.daybreakgames.com >> c:\netinfo.txt
    • pathping lpj.daybreakgames.com >> c:\netinfo.txt
    (4) Now, go to C:\netinfo.txt, and open that file with Notepad. Copy and paste all that info here. These three commands help us see if you have internet roadblocks, and exactly where they occur.

You need not share these results here if you don't want to. You may be able to see from the results what the problem is, and if so you may be able to take steps to address it yourself.Otherwise, you can paste that info here and we can try to see what the issue may be.

Don't feel too bad, you are not the only one sans EQ2. I have been EQ2-less for nearly 4-5 days now & it feels so odd to have nothing to do with my time. I used to spend most of my day with 17 of my 19 Characters of Norrath; they are on Skyfire the other 2 on Kaladim I don't play as much & actually remade on Skyfire since I couldn't seem to transfer them there for some reason. SO I am about to switch platforms from Windows7 to Windows10 in order to get me my Characters of Norrath back! It's something I've meant to do for quite some time - W10 package which hubby tells me is a flash drive not a disc thus the smaller box it's in, has been sitting atop my computer terminal for over 2 months now - but I was always too busy playing EQ2 & sometimes LOTR to stop & switch operating platforms.
I would advise anyone doing Clear Cache & Verify Files (as advised to me by my friendly EQ2 Help Desk Personnel) to do so very carefully because I always experience a little lag afterwards. The last time I performed it I got so much lag that I decided, rather stupidly, to correct via Control Panel & for some reason Clicked on 'repair older programs not meant for W7' & since then my EQ2 has totally gone south! All that opens is the black rectangle with DayBreak Logo = nothing else at all happens!! I have tried to reverse the stupid "older programs" move but it seems irreversable. At any rate, I've tried everything I've read about here & that I could think of & No Dice. So after getting the last of my screenshots out of EQ2 files (I do drawings of other people's characters since I already sketched my own in colored pencil) I am going to proceed with changing Operating Systems. Can't wait to get back into Qeynos. Got 2 girls in Freeport too - I hope they are all faring OK without me. Hubby is going to help me Reformat my Computer since it must be obvious to all by now that I am very computerized nonsavvy. Wish me luck & hopefully see you in Norrath in a day or two!!!!

Also want to say that if I experience any troubles with my newly installed EQ2 game on my new W10 I am going to try Sigrdrifa's advice of hitting the Up Arrow numerous times at log in to see if that gives me any help. Am going to be very wary of Clear Cache & Verify Files in future. Apparently I am not tech-savvy enough to handle such delicate operations.

It is more widespread than DB realizes, it's happening to me. And I know it is more widespread because I see in OOC that people ask why is my pet and/or merc not following me? Because it is part of the issue. What happens is this:

Your pet or merc stops following you. You cannot interact with anything, including combat, npcs, harvest nodes, banker, broker, etc.. However, you can still run around and talk in chat. You cannot see any responses to chat, but others can see what you type. After a few minutes you get kicked to character select. This happens about every 15 minutes or so during game play. If you try to go back in from the character select right after you get booted, you will get kicked even sooner. If you restart the game you will get maybe 15 minutes again.

Aside from doing everything suggested to me by tech support from my ticket: Clean boot, etc.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled Windows. Reinstalled the full game. Validated it. Checked it's compatibility. Checked with Norton for issues, none, it's a trusted program. Checked for driver (nvidia) updates, none. Ran as admin. Upgraded my internet connection with Comcast to the fastest version. Changed my mouse.

I have no idea what else to do. I will attach what was suggested above, as well as a Dxdiag.

Please fix this ASAP, I noticed from forums that this issue is not new, it has happened in the past on and off for years. The fix can only come from DB according to these forum responses.

@Cutie, I noticed you have DirectX 11. Do you also have DirectX 9.0c? EQ2 requires it and it co-exists nicely with later versions. I install it directly into my Everquest II folder. Trying to download it from Microsoft will usually get a response that you have a later version, so I download it as needed from http://eq2wire.com/files/dx9eq2.zip
Tkia, Geroblue and Breanna like this.

Thank you so much for your response. I do have Direct X 9.0 C.

I have done some more testing and I have found that it happens the first time you log in for the day. And after you run the game again, it's fine until you change characters. And of course I am an altaholic and have the max amount of characters.

I noticed that the original post was the same issue. I wish more people would report this so that we can get a fix. Sadly right now I'm testing other games, but in all fairness, including my love of this game, I am trying to give DB a chance to help.
