Just for reference to anyone thinking of upgrading here are some benchmarks numbers I got from my old CPU v new Old PC - i5 4670k, 8GB 1600mhz DDR3 ram New PC - AMD 3700x, 16 GB 3600mhz DDR4 ram Same GPU - 1080 ti. The number below were generated in water event heroic in CD expansion. Everquest 2 Old PC - FPS Low 20, Avg 50, High 70 New PC - FPS Low 20, Avg 70, High 120 Here are some numbers from other games, Witcher 3 Old PC - FPS (34, 55, 70) New PC - FPS (45, 70, 95) Assassin's Creed: Odyssey Old PC - FPS (23, 45, 60) New PC - FPS (30, 53, 75) Greedfall Old PC - FPS Low 50, Avg 70, High 100 New PC - FPS Low 50, Avg 80, High 120 Overall better than expected number from the CPU upgrade ....
Is it the improvement from the CPU upgrade or increasing the RAM from 8GB 1600mhz DDR3 to 16 GB 3600mhz DDR?
Faster RAM does contributes something and in fact allows the CPU to work even better but I would guess majority(80%+) of the improvement comes from the fast speed of the CPU than RAM.
It all comes down to single thread performance, the amount of work completed by some software that runs as a single stream of instructions in a certain amount of time. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html
