Graphical Changes?

I'm returning to the game after a long hiatus of about 10 years or so.. I just have a general question about something I noticed with the graphics since playing again. Is it just me or have the max detail setings been dumbed down since then? I could be wrong, but I remember things like foilage and plants moving as the player moved through it, ambient shadow and lighthing effects that don't seem to be present anymore as well as water interaction effects.. Have these been removed from the game? Or am I remembering wrong?

You may need to go over your graphical settings bit by bit. Foliage never moved (as far as I recall) when moving for it before. There are definitely ambient shadow and lighting effects - you may not have GPU shadows enabled (non-GPU shadows seem mostly unsupported/incomplete, but I could be wrong about that).

Hail and well met! Welcome back home.

Your memory serves you right, dear friend.

Feel free to upvote or join the discussion :) We lost a few effects along the way, for sure, but my hope rn is that we can get them back seeing how we now have a brand new 64-bit client capable of addressing much more memory than before with the old 32-bit client. On the other hand though, other effects have been greatly improved, albeit a bit glitchy in its current iteration, like mentioned above; gpu shadows, godrays and more are now available. Also make sure to play in fullscreen as windowed mode can change the way colors and shadows look, at least on my system it's a night and day difference between fullscreen and windowed mode.

Some graphical options were removed a while ago for whatever reason, I guess they broke and it was too much work to maintain them. It's really a shame that this game never got graphical improvements like World of Warcraft did, but I guess that's just how things worked out.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of this has to do with direct x and the like.
