Good Morning (Afternoon really but we love time warps) ROAD TRIPPERS!!!

Its Monday and Happy Labor Day to Everybody that is from the US!! I have set our time delays today exceptionally long so that everything we are visiting is actually in the morning. So that you will all be free to port to your homes for BBQs and Cookouts with Friends and Families.

Today, we are visiting Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, The Large Binocular Telescope in Safford, Arizona (lots of controversy surrounding the building of this telescope), Area 66 in Yucca, Arizona, and the Yuma Territorial Prison. The way I have set our time delays today, it is still breakfast time and we have not left, so there is nothing yet to write up even though I have been to all of these places except Area 66. I wanted the afternoon and evening available so that you all could spend them with friends and families and I have moved our home base to Sedona, to the Enchantment Resort, we are all booked into Pool Suites or Spa/Pool Suites, which means every body has their own pool!!!!!! I figured move us to a more central location since we are seeing more and more in Southern and Southwestern and Southeastern Arizona. Your red buttons have been reprogrammed to take you to this hotel when you come back this evening. Remember to take them with you, if you forget them, I am just a shout away.

Tomorrow, we will be visiting The Superstition Mountains Museum, London Bridge in Lake Havasu, Arizona, Standin' On The Corner Park in Winslow, Arizona (made famous by The Eagles), Burger King Navajo Code Talkers Display in Kayenta, Arizona (which is owned by the son of one of the Navajo Code Talkers and has the largest collection of Code Talker Memorabilia and information in the country, even more than the Pentagon!!), and The McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope in Sells, Arizona.

Wednesday, this one I found for Gero, The Ignite Sign Art Museum in Tucson, Arizona, The Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch in Picacho, Arizona, The Hall of Flame Firefighting Museum in Phoenix, Arizona (my adopted father was a Rural Metro firefighter/paramedic for 20 years from the day Rural Metro started), Parker Dam in Parker, Arizona.

Thursday we will visit Oak Creek Canyon, Slide Rock, Whiskey Row in Prescott, Florence, Arizona, Home of Arizona State Department of Corrections Death Row Unit where I was an Officer on Death Row and a Yard Dog the last 12 years of my career, Bullhead City, Arizona which is on the opposite side of the Colorado River from Laughlin, Nevada, we can go on the paddle boats and visit the casinos, have a nice dinner and cocktails in Laughlin and then port back to Sedona.

Friday, we can explore Sedona before heading to Six Flags Over Norrath which is the end of our SUMMER ROAD TRIP 2019. Unless I missed something. If there is anything I missed or something else somebody wants to see before we wrap this ROAD TRIP up, please let me know!!

*casts the group speed buff, hands everybody a new hat with a Miniature Flandrau Planetarium on it, stealths over and puts Ttobey's new hat on him, taking note that the Planetarium is almost as big as his head before stealthing back to her spot, giggles a bit, double checks the time delays are correct before relocking the security box, and shouts*

Alright ROAD TRIPPERS breakfast is over and we need to get moving so all of you can get to your Friends and Family and BBQs and Cookouts this afternoon!!!

( sigh... back home beading, couldn't find the eye in the needle. Vague memory of something I read years ago... It splits. So now I can use the 11/0 beads and not have to hunt around for 11/0s that are larger... )

    "Mmmphph !"

You see walking towards you several haversacks full of seed beads. It appears they have eaten Gero. No wait, he is carrying them.

What was the controversy about building the Large Binocular Telescope? Was it on sacred land? :-/

The peak it is on is part of the Coronado National Forest. Telescope headquartered at the Tucson campus of the University of Arizona.

This is from the wiki on the LBTO:

"The choice of location sparked considerable local controversy, both from the San Carlos Apache Tribe, who view the mountain as sacred, and from environmentalists who contended that the observatory would cause the demise of an endangered subspecies of the American red squirrel, the Mount Graham red squirrel. Environmentalists and members of the tribe filed some forty lawsuits—eight of which ended up before a federal appeals court—but the project ultimately prevailed after an act of the United States Congress.

The telescope and mountain observatory survived two major forest fires in thirteen years, the more recent in the summer of 2017. Likewise the squirrels continue to survive. Some experts now believe their numbers fluctuate dependent upon nut harvest without regard to the observatory."

About 200 or so acres of forest on the mountain top were demolished to build a 17 story building to house twin telescopes side by side with 22.8 foot mirrors and a combined aperature of approximately 11.8 feet. This telescope has more light gathering power than the Hubble Telescope.

Sorry folks, lots of cog fog today and exhausted from the MS. I will catch up on the ROAD TRIP updates either later tonight or tomorrow.
  11. Uwkete-of-Crushbone Well-Known Member

No worries; as long as you're okay! Thanks for the info on the telescopes, y'all! :)

    Uwk
who'd probably be more upset if it were on National Park land (PM me about my personal opinion of the Forest Service...), but aside from the Apache concerns (how are they handling it, one wonders? Did they bless the site to include it as part of the sacred lands?), it's good to know it's not disrupting too much :)

Thank you, its just an overload of that nasty adulting stuff and the extreme heat and of course the adulting stuff has to be done in the daytime when it is the hottest. If it would at least cool down lower than 100 deg F at night it might be a bit more tolerable. Last night I had to pick up my older daughter and her boyfriend, the ones that were in the car accident that totaled the boyfriends H3, they had to turn in the rental car, they waited until 11:30 pm and it was still 106 deg F outside. We got back to the house here about 1 am and it was 103 deg F.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!! It' down in the 60's sometimes 50's here now. It only gut up to 70 today during the day. I guess maybe Michigan isn't that bad after all LOL. We went down to Louisiana a few years ago and it was totally miserable. If you took a shower and then went outside you were sweating so bad you needed a shower again. I'm still not a fan of the cold though. I wish I could find a place that was like low to mid 70's all year round.

man that's one and maybe the only reason I am happy to be out of California.
here it get's really unpleasant too and it's like a steam room , to much darn moisture that makes it hard to sleep too ,
but triple numbers are very rare.

    Good Afternoon ROAD TRIPPERS!!!!

I am so glad to be able to write again!!!

It is Wednesday and we began the day by visiting the Parker Dam in Parker Arizona. This is a concrete arch-gravity dam 155 miles downstream from the Hoover Dam, it straddles the border at the narrows the river passes through between the Whipple Mountains of California and the Buckskin Mountains of Arizona . It is 320 feet high, 235 feet of this is below the riverbed which makes this the deepest dam in the world!! The primary function of this dam is to create a reservoir, Lake Havasu, and generate Hydroelectric power. Lake Havasu can store over 290 billion gallons of water. The power plant has four Francis turbines with a combined capacity of 120 MW, and operates at 97% efficiency.

After Parker Dam, we ported to Phoenix and toured the Hall of Flames Firefighting Museum. This museum also houses the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes which lists all the firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1981 which is when records began being kept for this as well as lists of firefighters that have been awarded medals of honor. This museum has a lot of vintage hand and horse drawn fire equipment ranging from 1725 to 1969. They have turnout equipment. Displays on fire helmets, extinguishers, alarms, emblems, marks and all sorts of items related to fire fighting history. They have also included in the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, displays for the police officers and port authority officers that lost their lives along with the firefighters and EMS that were first responders to the World Trade Center.

This afternoon, we are visiting The Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch in Picacho, Arizona and The Ignite Sign Art Museum in Tucson, Arizona. Since we have our time delays set so long, I added in a visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, which includes a tour of the Aircraft Boneyard.

I have scheduled cocktail hour for 7 pm and dinner for 8 pm at Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row in Old Town Scottsdale. I think you will all really enjoy this place. After dinner we will port back to our hotel to relax for the evening. We can chat in the lounge until 2 am with drinks or enjoy the spa amenities until 11 pm or the pools which everybody has their own so they are 24 hours a day. I hate to leave this hotel EVER!!!

Come on ROAD TRIPPERS, think of more things to do so we can stay on at this hotel for a few more days!!! At least through Sunday night!!!

Usually thunderstorms or monsoons come up with no warning around 5 pm - 6:30 pm so its 108-112 deg F and zoom the humidity flies up to 100%, 12 drops of rain fall and its over except for the wind and the dust.

That's weird... Aren't ostriches supposed to have feathers? Wait a second those aren't ostriches they are Deinonychus and boy are they angry!! Whoops there goes Geroblue taken down by a group of tiny ones. Crunch! Oh look everyone's running back to the bus and there goes Breanna shutting the door of course. Uwk made it up onto the roof, Rosyposy, sad, the dino leader gobbled her up, Schmetterling somehow found a balloon and is floating to safety, there she goes over the river, Nope , pteranodon swooped in and popped the balloon. She just fell into the river. Yep, mosasaur got her. And now an apatosaur is walking through stomping out the rest. What kind of Ostrich Ranch was this anyways?
  20. Schmetterling Well-Known Member

lol ttobeys last hurray of trying to get us before the summer road trip comes to an end .
he did not notice that when Breanna went in the bus she used the mega tortes shell feature on the buss and the thorn hide too made us all prickly little rock balls look how all those dino's are spitting up travelers
Look now she sets back the time warp to our time , and all of us are pulled back to safety all , including ttobey who has this guilty look on his face.
