Zoning into PoK crashes the game to desktop

    When I try to zone a character to PoK, the game will quit itself to desktop after a few seconds of loading.

    When I restart the game, I get the message that a character is already logged in and if I want to log it out which I click YES on.

    It will proceed to the character select screen.

    I choose the same character that crashed (or any other I know is in PoK right now) and the game starts to proceed to load.

    But each time the bottom info bar is showing "Preloading character textures..." (bar filled about 70%) the game will crash to desktop again.

    I can reproduce this over and over.

    It happens for any of my characters stationed in PoK.

    The character seems to remain in PoK for hours even though the game crashed and I am no longer connected. (People wondering why I never respond to tells.)

    Here's the special bit:
    This only happens on Agnarr. I can zone to PoK just fine on other servers.

    I have fiddled with eqclient.ini and tried various settings to no avail.

    I had done the file integrity check from the launcher.
    I later have fully redownloaded the game.

    Nothing helped.

    I websearched (don't like to use the term 'googled' haha) and people kept having the same issues over the years. Sometimes it's affecting the guild lobby as well (according to them).

    Even in an EQemu forum someone had that issue and the admin removed a certain NPC from the zone to fix the issue. (Not sure if related.)

    DBG does not support Linux, and thats the only system that this error has been reported on.

    It's been working for many years and it is working on other servers. Doesn't seem to be related to Linux and no, it's not the only system that this error has been reported on. No need to be repellend when you can't be helpful.

    No mention of the OS but kinda safe to assume it's Windows. At least you can't state those were on Linux. So your comment "thats the only system that this error has been reported on" is false.

    You have to search more specifically than just crashing to desktop. Yes, Windows has experienced crashes. Windows has not reported the Unknown format 98 error. Despite people able to get it working on Linux systems to date, DBG will not patch specifically for Linux systems. It probably could be a texture, but probably a player ornament texture with someone on Agnarr and not related to the zone.

    Not asking for any Linux-only fixes. Just came here assuming I am not the only person experiencing this and that a few other folks (Windows users) would chime in when they had the same issue and so we could start elaborating what the culprit might be while at the same time providing possibly helpful feedback to the devs.

    Have you tried deleting your character and starting over?


    Kidding... sort of.

    But, really, try Origin to get your guy in the game, and then zone over to PoK and see if that causes the same problem.

    Try to click the ''start at my home location'' on your character, then teleport to GL, and see if you can enter PoK from there?

    We are well aware that only the Windows platform is officially supported. So far, playing EQ on Linux was flawless until the DX11 upgrade and these random crashes to desktop.

    It's up to devs to decide if they want to at least have a look on these crashes. Not having a crash on the Windows platform (and that's a good thing since most players use it) doesn't mean there's not a bug that goes undetected until one day when it becomes more serious.

    Before resorting to devs, the community did some research, and here is a summary of what has been found so far :

    - The crash may happen during the second part of the loading bar, after the character selection and before entering the world. It crashes around 50% of the second bar.

    - It can also happen when zoning. The crashes are random. Sometimes zoning into PoK, Lobby, Bazaar, Laurion Song or any other busy place works fine, sometimes it crashes.

    - These 2 lines appear in the dbg.txt file :

    - These crashes have been confirmed on various Linux distributions as well as on macOS, both using DXVK (the Linux version of DX11).

    - The DXVK team has been informed of this bug. According to them, the game log file lines were generated by the game itself, since there's nothing in either wine or dxvk's source tree that would print those lines.

    - A known way to prevent these crashes from happening is by setting the Display > New Armor option to "Me + NPCs". Which leads to think the bug might be related to a texture on a PC, pet or mercenary.

    - In one instance, a guildmate (macOS) and me (Linux) both crashed at the same time entering Laurion Inn, so this option doesn't work 100% though it only happened once in a few weeks. Before setting that New Armor option we used to crash many times a day.

    - According to a DXVK dev, "That texture format log has to be a game problem. DXGI Format 98 is DXGI_FORMAT_BC7_UNORM and DXVK supports that just fine. A lot of games use it without any issues too."

    Hopefully this information will be read by a dev and lead to the realization that some specific texture somewhere is incorrectly handled, or there's a corrupted texture file, even if it has so far no consequences on the Windows platform.

    Fiddling with the New Armor option didn't yield and good results for me. I now got it working again though.

    The following is Linux talk:

    I created a fresh win64 prefix.
    Using winetricks I added corefonts, d3dx11_43 and d3dcompiler_43. Nothing else.
    I used wine to install the game from scratch using the current downloadable executable.

    (I did save my old eqclient.ini and all my character specific files and restored them before firing up the game for the first time.)

    Lo and behold I now could zone again into PoK without crashing and tbh I was stunned by the performance gain. No more sluggish camera in PoK at the pile of people. Solid 72fps for me (I capped EQ at 72fps on my 144Hz screen).

    So I am not using Lutris or Bottles or Steam. Just plain wine. To be precise I am using lutris-GE-Proton8-26-x86_64 because it doesn't do weird things with mouselook. Also using MangoHud.

    I believe the DXVK version that is built into wine does not produce the error. When I downloaded DXVK 2.3 from github and replaced the DLLs in the prefix the crash would occur again. Reverting back to native wine dxvk made everything work again.
