I think it will do the opposite actually...

Right now I dont want to make an alt cause of the abhorrent exp rates, once they speed it up I plan to make one.

I know some people that arent playing because of how horrid the exp is.

IMO it will probably bring more people to the server than it will run off

Maxing out group content gear takes longer than two weeks.... and unless you're in a 12 person raid guild you certainly aren't maxing out raid gear in two weeks. (you'll be lucky to in 12 weeks outside of doing contested raids! And considering the massive numbers that requires to compete with AoS/OGC.... yea, still pretty lucky to do in 12 weeks...)

Yeah, no. Coming from a guy who has over 20 lvl 95-100s in WoW and who has been leveling consistently in EQ since phinny has started i can say undoubtedly that it takes much more time leveling in EQ 1-50 than it does leveling in WoW 1-100.

There are no barriers to leveling in WoW. Queues are very quick, anyone can solo at any given moment if they prefer. Gear has Xp modifiers on it. Whats more is that game is more dynamic and leveling is actually interesting ( Quests, new abilities, talents at early levels). You can go balls to the walls from the moment you log in to the moment you quit for the night, eq doesnt offer that as you are at the mercy of other players most of the time.

If it takes you longer than a week to level to 100 in WoW you are doing something really wrong.

Also mentioning that phinny is going to die because there is no sense of achievement, then going on to say that people will go play WoW is kind of funny. Seeing as WoW set the bar for catering to casuals and achieving anything in WoW aside from high end PVP ratings and raiding is laughable, much like most of EQ for the first 4 expansions.

If phinny dies it wont be from the lack of "achievements" but from the fact that the game isnt interesting until AA , more quest lines, and faster gameplay. Otherwise its you sitting in a corner casting a couple spells every other pull, grinding slowly and not leveling alts.

Everquest has been nerfed to the point where tlp's are more casual than wow. sorry guys but it's the truth. it USED to be a hard game
  5. Moonii Elder

The more Rothj adds to this thread the more it feels like he's just trolling. Who the hell plays wow anymore anyway? 3 years between xpacs that finish in 6 months lol
  6. GrugSA Augur

I believe he will be raiding with his guild OGC
  7. kain200 Elder

    Obvious troll thread.

Obvious Venthros alt. If not, sorry buddy, Venthros is already our resident contrarian. You're sucking up his desperately needed attention.

    RIP Phinny, dead server

Uhhh.. not sure if you've ever seen mmo population statistics or not, but boy do I have news for you.
  10. Draekon Elder

agreed.. while the xp grind was slow, those of us that have done it, feels more accomplished than it did on ragefire. even with kronos and gear its still not much faster on phini which makes it a challenge like EQ was.

When has Everquest ever been harder than WoW*?

Oh I have to run back to my corpse and get my gear. At least the gear is still in the pristine condition it was when it was initially dropped/crafted. Lost exp? That's a rez away. Anyone remember the first Onyxia raids before MC was cleared and how much money the guilds had to throw at the tanks to keep their gear repaired? Didn't cost much to raid in EQ.

How many buttons did melees have to push in 2004 in EQ?

Speaking of raids. What was the mechanics of Nagafen, Vox, Vulak, and Tunare again? Trak's teleporting mechanic was interesting. Cept you saw tactics like that in the 5 man dungeons in WoW.

You are right about one thing. EQ got easier over time in some regards, but the majority of it was Quality of Life and timesaving. Think about it for a minute. Being a champion at corpse recovery didn't really get you any loot. It was a pointless and frustrating mechanic that did little but cause key people in your group to quit mid way out of frustration.

*Of course when I speak of WoW I mean the initial November 2004 release. I specifically remember Everquest players getting rolled in that game during both elite quests and dungeons. Some of us adapted, and it was a welcome change from 1. click target, 2. Autoattack, 3. Wait.

The xp change is going to make the server feel very alive (as long as it's about double the current xp rate). I'm not leveling any alts now because of the abysmally slow xp rate, and I know many others that feel the same way. There are also many people that quit the server altogether because of the slow xp...they will probably come back.
  13. Tudadar Augur

Not sure how you can say this after the weeks of double xp we just had and would probably continue to have without the boost ( not sure if it changes now )
  14. taliefer Augur

I've leveled two characters to 50 on phinny, and I don't feel any more accomplished than with my characters on lockjaw. It just took longer killing the same mobs. Not much of an achievement. Faster exp on a faster paced server is a good thing
  15. Ultrazen Augur

Like most things in life, it will piss some people off, make some others happy, and still others won't really care.

I like to play alts, there is a 3 month unlock on this server. I don't like to play EQ for a living any more, and I do like instancing and no boxing so....it makes me happy. I abandoned a character there after my 1000000000000000th skeleton kill when I literally fell asleep at the keyboard. EQ at lower levels is just not that engaging of a game to be that slow. Being able to see content you didn't see the first time, or doing it on a different class is fun. Killing your 1 billionth croc in Oasis, not so much.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet that you are wrong, and that there will be a big population surge due to the exp changes.
  16. Rothj Augur

    To address double exp:

People will always go towards the path of least resistance. If you implement double exp for 3 days, people will grind their off on those 3 days. Then they will be less motivated. If you permanently implement double exp people may be more interested for a short period of time, but then interest will die down until the population is where it was normally at.

Look at it this way: lets say soe implements a double plat weekend. All monsters have 2x drops. Tons of people would log in. Is the argument now that monsters should drop double the amount of money because people logged in more? It's obvious this is the reaction you can expect to a change like that.

People will always want more, easier, better, faster. It doesn't mean that giving them what they want is gonna result in a better game.
  17. oldkracow 9999 Is the Krono Account Limit

Should already know that DBG will do whatever makes the most financial sense 1st, followed by what makes sense in a 15+ year old video game with limited market share.
    Tudadar likes this.
  18. Rothj Augur

DBG doesn't even know what makes most financial sense. They're just making guesses. If they actually knew what they were doing they wouldn't be in this position to begin with.
  19. GrugSA Augur

You're conflating complexity and difficulty. Things can be complex without being difficult. Example

    Mouse trap game

While this game is extremely complex it is in no way difficult. While on the other something like dunking a basketball is simple in complexity yet too difficult for many people to do. While WoW and current EQ both much more complex, i wouldn't consider either one of them difficult. For most group, raid and even quest content you're spoon feed strats which result in a MMO that plays more like an easy rhythm with Dragons and Swords. Where as old EQ take for example corpse runs you're presented with much less complex task but at the same time an often more difficult one as you aren't being spoon feed the best way to recover said corpse or that easy way may not be available at the time. While the task isn't as complex it can't be quite a bit more difficult to figure out how to complete said text due to the open-endedness of the task.

Eq is not about lvling though, it is about doing things with your guild. Socialise, raid, have fun. The greatest barrier to that is xping, and the slower it goes, the longer before ppl get to where it is at. The strong rooting into the game happens when you acheive something with your guildfriends, not when you are near dead of boredom, and your character reaches lvl 40. So basically it is a great misunderstanding that the slow xp brings anything good. E eryone are suoer veteran players allready and can play all classes with their feet while blindfolded allready, so the learning curve argument dont hold either.
