Take a deep breath, maybe drink a beer, and chill out :p

I'm sure most everyone doesn't care for this added downtime, but it should be expected from time to time. Humans are imperfect and thus so is technology. I find it hilarious when people make posts wanting their day of playtime back. Have fun getting that 50 cent check :p

This has been happening since the start of EQ. Happened with Verant. Happened with Sony. Happens and will continue to happen with DBG. I think it's completely unreasonable for people to complain that a game has some unscheduled downtime. I'd understand if it was every other day, but I can't remember the last time there was an unplanned outage such as this. It's certainly not the norm, and in the end we will all be better for it as whatever they are fixing will likely make the game better in the long run.

In short, if you are that unhappy about losing your 50 cents, just quit (make sure you parcel me any and all chase loot you have before you do :p). However, I'd be willing to bet that most that are complaining will continue paying because at the end of the day it's a great game and will continue to be so. I for one appreciate the efforts that the Devs put into this game to keep it going.

What is always funny is if they do happen to give a day of double exp as compensation, which I don't think is necessary by any means, there will inevitably be someone who complains that they can't play that day and it's not fair!

LOL.. so you are comfortable with the expectation that nothing has gotten better in almost 20 years of an active MMO? Good for you as you are welcome to lower your standards but not all of us are. Technology should become better over time in this age of rapid innovation and learning... it should not stagnate into any status quo. =).

I think you'd be hard pressed to find an MMO that doesn't have unplanned outages from time to time.

Do you realize how massive the coding is for this game by now? It's a miracle that any change they make doesn't break something, rofl.

I will say that if anyone should be complaining about anything it's a lack of communication from DBG.

I think 'all of them' is the correct answer.

This is straight from the patch notes: Performed additional upgrades to both the client and server to utilize more modern hardware and operating system features.

They are working on improving the technology and not letting it stagnate. Hardware and software do not improve on their own. Humans need to still put in the work. New technology is not foolproof. Computers do not solve everything on their own magically. Code is written by humans. There are an infinite number of things that can go wrong.

That is why you test it before you put it on live systems. You also test and have a plan for how to roll it back when it fails!

As hyperbolic as it may sound, there have probably never been any software releases that were 100% bug-free.

I worry that if we really want to hold the EverQuest team to standards more typical of enterprise software with a team of several dozen, then we'd lose the game completely due to budget problems. The player base is just not big enough to fund that kind of team.

Imagine if EQ had a million paying subscribers to keep the game going like that?

That's an irrelevant analogy. A big mac doesn't contain millions and millions of lines of code to make, does it?

As far as a test server, coming from serveral years of IT, test environments are rarely 100% identical to production. People are free to moan and complain over the fact that it wasn't tested enough, or whatever the complaint it. The reality is that no matter how much testing or how much redundancy is in place, issues happen.

Careful. DBG has decided to flag the accounts of every person complaining tonight on the forums. All current and future characters will receive:
    • an invisible 3% XP penalty
    • an invisible -3% AC and ATK debuff
    • an invisible +3% resist check on all spells cast
Yes. It's so, so petty. But it will sure make them feel a whole lot better.

    Just kidding.
    I hope.
